Life in the ancient Roman city of Pompeii was preserved for centuries in AD 79, when the volcanic ash of the erupting Mount Vesuvius sprinkled three cities - Pompeii, Herculaneum and Stabia. Before the nearby volcano erupted, Pompeii was a grand and bustling city, far enough from Rome that it attracted wealthy idlers from the capital. Thus it became the ancient "Beverly Hills" of the Roman Empire.
