Holst was the Music Teacher at St.Paul's School for Girls in West London, and this was written for his pupils to perform. The school was where General Montgomery gave his final exposition of his plans for D-Day to an audience including King George VI, Churchill, Eisenhower etc, possibly exactly where those girls practised Holst's music.

Good background, thank you, though unfortunately the last suggestion can't be right. Montgomery's headquarters was the boys' school on the south side of Hammersmith Road. Holst was a teacher at the girls' school, a little way to the north, on Brook Green. I used to live on the former site of the boys' school, but the girls' school is very much still there.

Wonderful! Our orchestra is strings-only right now and this is the version of the piece I practice with. So beautiful. Thank you.

How nice that the cellists and bassist get put on a pedestal.

Holst and Vaughn Williams were good friends. I wonder how they felt about each others treatment of "Greensleeves"? Great performance guys!

I thought the conducting was pretty good here 😀Certainly not over-conducted which is a peril many fall into. In the last movement I think you could have given more support to the 1-in-a-bar Greensleeves theme; it's sometimes difficult to feel where that upcoming barline is, and it sometimes feels like you're leaping into the unknown whenever one does it... The 1:2 tempo relationship in the Intermezzo was really good, too. Good idea!

My string ensemble is playing this piece this semester. Nice to hear how it's actually supposed to sound. :3 Although to me, this piece is pretty monotonous.

Not my favorite piece in the world, but your rudeness is way out of line here. Honest comments don't deserve personal insults.

@@callummcsherry4354 he believes there should should be more dynamics throughout the song that they could add. So on some measures they could Crescendo then decrescendo in the next to create some more emotions. Especially on half notes and whole notes. You want to Crescendo into the middle of a half or whole note and then decrescendo to the original dynamic. It’s adds more feeling and makes it less monotonous. Sorry if this answer was late this is the first time I’m seeing this video😂

This is the best performance of this piece I have yet heard. Have you considered recording a series of English classic string works? If you can bring this energy to more performances it would help to dispel the notion that early 20th-century music is all 'cows looking over gates'! Thnak you again.
