This was very helpful and I agree with John Swaim. I'm thinking of trying this out for my initial block-in to set up the value and temperature contrast off the bat then pushing areas lighter/darker or warmer/cooler.

What do you do when you have one object over another and the bottom is in shadow and the top is well lit, BUT, the shadowed object underneath is a light/bright hue and the object on top/in front is a dark hue? It seems that whenever Iʻve come across this dilemma it looks wrong; I canʻt create the illusion that the lighter/brighter object is in shadow under the darker one. Thank you so much!
Thanks for your question, Lori. I'll put your request on our filming schedule. Look for it in July as we film these several weeks in advance. Meanwhile, no matter how light the local color is, it changes value when in shadow. You can squint and see the difference. Any color in shadow takes on a bit of its complement so to create that shadow, you'd reach first for the hue's complement.

I’m already 2 years busy with colors but i could already draw photo realism with pen or pencil. So i have no problem with the values. I enjoy all your videos anyway. Simple and sharp. My question is, is that really so important the exact intensity or temperature of the color in hyperrealism? I love to make hyperrealism and thats the only reason I started working with the colors. In painting, it is important to recognize the differences in temperatures, but not helpful to try to be exact. Remember that the temperature of a color is relative to other colors surrounding it.

My problem is, when I let the painting dry but then wanna paint over it, add a detail or another layer. The already dry first layer have changed colours and values, because it is dry. the wet paint has a different value than a dry paint. I can not catch up to that and start painting on it because I dont see the real values. I know some people oil it out (apply oil onto dry layer to freshen it up and continue painting.) but there is a problem with oiling out. I cant do it too many times because the painting becomes oily and sticky. also, I can’t oil it out til it’s not all completely dry and this waiting is another problem. I have been srruggling with this for years. do you have any tips? thank you very much and also thank you for all your teachings

I've not experienced oils doing that. Acrylics dry darker as a usual thing. Oils do sink in, though, when they've dried. If you oil out correctly, that should resolve the issue. Check out my Quick Tip ua-cam.com/video/LBScWqDSHxc/v-deo.html for how to do that.
Yes. In not in shadow areas, you might see reflected color, but not reflected light because light rays hitting areas not in shadow obscure any light that might be reflecting.
The problem with doing that is that charcoal mostly likely will muddy your oil based pastel colors. Graphite is not really compatible. You can use the darks of your oil based pastels to make values pop.

I'm in no place to teach anyone, but the video that Dianne did about light sources, I think it was the quick tip 282, helped me a lot with this, specially when you can identify the predominant "color of light" (so you can use it's complement for the shadow) and the strength of each one (so one of them will prevail and the other will give just a flair).

It's tricky and a questionable idea to use two light sources. Shadows overlap and can feel cumbersome in the painting.
