I work in a call center for a bank, and I just started wearing my hair out in an afro about a month ago. I used to wear braids all year. I recently decided to get comfortable not manipulating it. I noticed that some of my black female coworkers who normally wore braids started wearing their hair naturally. And that only encouraged me to keep wearing my hair out.
I agree with her. I wear my 4b/4c hair everyday to work . I work for the government and I'm the only woman of color their. I wear a braid out, twist out or a afro. I get respect and love for my hair.
I think because of social media I have noticed people even children are comfortable to ask me if my hair is real. I might start asking people back too. But I have noticed other races compliment our natural hair but our own will ask when will we get it done🤔
The way I feel is as long as my hair is clean and neat then I'm fine. At this point I'm not wearing a wig or straightening my hair for work. You're correct, bw need to learn how to report uncomfortable comments about their hair. It doesn't have to be a big conflict, but just speak out.
I wear my natural hair to work. For a while though, I was only comfortable with wearing my hair in it's stretched form e.g. braid out, twist out, blow out. This year I decided to wear my natural in its most natural state, unstretched with all it's shrinkage... And the world is still spinning lol. The only change I've experienced is the increase in compliments I get. So yeah, wear your natural hair. Most people don't actually care. Some are intrigued because they're not used to seeing black women in their shrunken coily hair.
Last year, I started wearing my long natural hair at my current job and now I feel comfortable wearing my natural hair everyday. Back then, I use to slick my hair into a bun everyday and I wore wigs especially since I use to work in the office because I faced hair discrimination in the past. Now I work from home and I embraced wearing my natural hair down no matter where I go.
Thank you for this video ! I have been wearing it and I get cheers or shocking looks. I am a teacher who is currently working at a summer camp so it was been interesting. Once again thank you this video has been very helpful ❤
I literally sleek my hair in a ponytail and add the outre spring twist and boy do I look professional AF. I’m the only black girl at my office and I hated my coworkers looking at my lace and asking questions. Now I wear my hair no topics and I feel the most confident cause I know it’s my own hair.
I feel a bit uncomfortable to wear my natural hair at my office too sometimes. I’m the only brown person there and the youngest by 20 years. When I do natural styles or add some shells or beads to my hair, they tell my that my hair is festive or fun 😂
Most of them aren't used to women of color wearing their natural curls and afros. Then you add jewelry to your hair, of course they're gonna be surprised and intrigued lol. We need to start appearing with our natural hair more. I had an Asian guy at work ask if I was celebrating something when I had my afro out. A older white guy asked if I was making a statement. Told em both that this is what African hair looks like. Then I looked at the black women in the building... Very few wore their afros out. Every girlie was in braids and wigs and loose curl extensions.
did that woman in the car say switch your hair until you have proven your worth and skills???? NO... HELL NO!!!! My hair doesn't definite my skills and worth. That sounds like a THEIR problem.
No sis is definitely a you problem if you’re working for them. They don’t really ever have to work for anyone that doesn’t look like them if they don’t want to. They also hold about 80% of all the world’s wealth combined. If you do work for them they will always be your problem. It makes no sense for us to work for them knowing it benefits them more than us and we making little paychecks. Thankfully that’s not my problem. I hope all of us will see that we can be free when we leave them out of our lives cold turkey. May take some time to bounce back but definitely worth the struggle and stress to move on from their world.
We have been moving out of the “natural hair not professional” commentary since the late 80s. Anyone saying they can’t wear their natural hair for this reason is making excuses
We still have news of hair discrimination at work as recent as 2-3 years ago. It’s not really a thing these days and some cases don’t get reported. But some still believe natural hair isn’t professional and would rather wear a straight wig to work to “blend in”.
@@Tinuola as someone who was in her 20s during the 80s I can see the difference. Yes there are some who still see natural curly kinky hair as negative but it’s nowhere near the numbers in the 80s. I’ve been a part of the cheer community for decades. 20 yrs ago most of the kinky curly girls had relaxers. It hasn’t been that way where I am in over 10 yrs. IMHO women who are not comfortable/confident wearing their natural hair are concerned with so called hair discrimination. Women who want to climb the social/corporate ladder are concerned with so called hair discrimination
Natural hair being "unprofessional" is not as strong of an issue in 2024 as it was in the past. I am an employment lawyer and see natural hair all over the workplace, in many different corporate spaces. I'm actually really surprised that people are still worried about their natural hair looking unprofessional.
I agree that it’s not as much of an issue these days but some people are still experiencing this in recently. And because this was a thing for so long, some women still feel awkward wearing their hair to work.
Thanks for sharing. To be fair those compliments comes off a certain way when you wear out your natural hair. I understand they might be doing it from a good place or to make you feel more comfortable but when you comment on my hair every other week I’ll wonder if you truly mean it or you are just making it up.
I don’t think the problem is our hair all the time. I think the problem is sometimes it doesn’t smell good and it doesn’t look washed. Honestly if you don’t have your own company and you work for someone just keep your job and follow their rules or advice. Or just quit. Doesn’t make sense to try to be accepted and respected by people you know will continue to disrespect you. And it really doesn’t make any sense for any of us to be working for them either. Just stop. Try to move ahead as soon as possible. Because we don’t need it. I don’t need it myself. I can move freely and do as I want thank God.
@DaF322 I was talking about you not me. I smell most of y’all from feet away. Makes no sense. Then the ones like me wear out hair out people look at us crazy because y’all make us look bad. Y’all be thinking y’all cute but be rancid as all get out.
I have not been around BW with smelly natural hair. And no company should have rules against BW wearing their natural hair to work. That’s still internalized hair discrimination.
@@celesteamour thank you. That is what my point was. But they will be in denial saying it’s discrimination. Honestly our hair needs more water, moisture and hydration than most. And layering product after product on top of adding oils and grease is disgusting. I notice how soft and lustrous my hair is when I keep my scalp and hair strands clean routinely. My hair and scalp just feels so fresh and nice. These same females that neglect their hair are used to the smell and they call filth build up. Why should that be normal?! That’s gross. So I do understand why these other people don’t like our hair. As for me my friends from Asia love to see my hair and touch it. So that says a lot about how I care for my hair and my body.
@@Tinuola if you ever go to a salon you will see it. I used to hate to do their hair. Y’all call it build up. I call that mess filth. Our hair needs the best care. And I can not go around with build up scratching my scalp and looking crazy. If it itch and it’s got build up that means you nasty.
