@scottfiore104 . Hi Scott. I had a great childhood and fantastic teen years. When I was 18. I took my beautiful 16 year old girlfriend for her birthday from Emeryville in the east bay for a helicopter ride to San Francisco to the Ferry terminal. Then took the Ferry boat to Sausalito (where Dock of the bay was written by Otis Redding) and had a wonderful dinner at a fancy waterfront restaurant. Returned after the same way. Ferry and helicopter. For my 19th birthday in 1973 she took me to Kezar in San Francisco to see Led Zeppelin!! Also I worked in Berkeley starting after High school in 1972. I got to meet Black Panther party leaders Huey Newton and Bobby Seale. They were very good men trying to help their community and unfortunately the Very racist ( at the time) Oakland Police set them up and murdered them. This is the San Francisco sound. My high-school hired the Airplane to play an assembly. I think we paid a grand. Or more. Psychedelic definitely had a place to stay in the 60s and 70s
I don't think it was related to Jerry not wanting credit. Different record companies and contracts made public credit legally problematic. The Airplane got around this on Surrealistic Pillow by listing Garcia as Spiritual Advisor. Which he certainly was as well, along with Bear. This music is so good because there were so many great musicians and other creative people from surrounding scene collaborating. Garcia also played on Baron Von Tollbooth and the Chrome Nun, and probably several others since these guys were all in and out of same recording studios at the time

In this heartfelt folk rock ballad, Marty Balin sings about discovering his best self through the love of another. It’s a sentiment that made “Today” (1966) a favorite at wedding and tribute ceremonies. Unlike Jefferson Airplane’s debut album, “Jefferson Airplane Takes off” (1966), which includes several tunes penned by Marty Balin and Paul Kantner, this is the sole lay on “Surrealistic Pillow” (1967) that is credited to both founding members. Balin claimed that he authored “Today” (1967) in order to get to know Tony Bennett and, above all, to offer the song to the elder artist so he could - maybe - interpret and record it❕(AND WHY NOT⁉️) While the Airplane were working in Studio B, the Rolling Stones were in Studio A, and Mr Bennett was in Studio C. Balin and the Stones hanged out and decided they all wanted to meet “the last of the great crooners”*. Their common wish to encounter the legendary performer was not fulfilled, and “Today” remained an Airplane piece. In fact, it ended up being one of their most enduring hits❕ All this shows one fact : on the one hand, celebrities are idols to their fans, but on the other hand, those personalities are fans of their own idols, just like the rest of us‼️ 💚🎶💙 * In 2021, Anthony Dominick Benedetto, a.k.a.Tony Bennett, broke the Guinness World Record for the oldest person to release an album of new material (“Love For Sale”), at the age of 95 years and 60 days❕
There is no other band like the Airplane. A heavenly sound. Truly captured the 60s

Today, everything you want

Unlike Jefferson Airplane’s debut album, “Jefferson Airplane Takes off” (1966), which includes several tunes penned by Marty Balin and Paul Kantner, this is the sole lay on “Surrealistic Pillow” (1967) that is credited to both founding members.
Balin claimed that he authored “Today” (1967) in order to get to know Tony Bennett and, above all, to offer the song to the elder artist so he could - maybe - interpret and record it❕(AND WHY NOT⁉️)
While the Airplane were working in Studio B, the Rolling Stones were in Studio A, and Mr Bennett was in Studio C. Balin and the Stones hanged out and decided they all wanted to meet “the last of the great crooners”*.
Their common wish to encounter the legendary performer was not fulfilled, and “Today” remained an Airplane piece. In fact, it ended up being one of their most enduring hits❕
All this shows one fact : on the one hand, celebrities are idols to their fans, but on the other hand, those personalities are fans of their own idols, just like the rest of us‼️ 💚🎶💙
* In 2021, Anthony Dominick Benedetto, a.k.a.Tony Bennett, broke the Guinness World Record for the oldest person to release an album of new material (“Love For Sale”), at the age of 95 years and 60 days❕
Did Tony Bennett get to record this ?
A shame, if not so.
@@noelsalisbury7448 To my knowledge, he did not record it. Best regards to you, Noel.
My favorite Marty Balin song - no one sings a love song like Marty
delicate , powerful - just beautiful
"I am so full of love I could burst apart and start to cry."
This sums me up over the last couple of years. Near death will do that to you.
The best song they ever did.
