- TAHLEQUAH - Thought it is not traditional, hog meat has been a staple in Cherokee communities for years, found when people come together for a hog fry.
Cherokee Nation citizen Jared Davis has been cooking hog meat for several years, having learned from elders and using that knowledge to cook the porcine delicacy.
Obtaining the meat
Traditionally, Cherokees would hunt feral hogs for the meat. Some still do today. Davis said the hog is not native to North America and was brought over by Europeans.
“Today, the hog breeds and multiplies so fast and they say it’s a nuisance. We have a lot of feral hogs around here and lot people go out and hunt these hogs,” he said. “The Cherokee somewhere along the way picked it up, realized you could put this thing in a kettle, put some grease on it and put some salt to it and man, you got a meal there.”
That looks so good.
Awesome, we need more videos like this!
Do y'all make gravy with the leftover grease like we do? NWGA native here. Granny made gravy every day. I just did it on a small scale and made gravy. Gravy n biscuits with your recipe rocks man. It's nothing like BBQ. I honestly can't decide which one I like best.
Good food, came via the Irish people who settled in TN/NC. We all traded recipes and traditions, it was and still is nice.
I've never had hog meat before, i imagine it taste similar to pork.
Thanks. That is something I've been wanting to make for a while now. Was that cut up pork shoulder?
Yes.
