    When I was cleaning out an older relatives house 5 years ago, I discovered all these craft supplies that I didn't recognize and now I know it was a box of supplies for tatting. I'm so glad I kept all of it so I can try these stitches out. There were many lengths of random patterns as well wrapped around wood spools.

      My family thought who ever had the most toys when they died won.
      Well I have so much of this thread I should make sure it's not rotten then donate it to all the youth groups and senior centers throughout my city . Or do you all have some recommendations of where I should share it? They did the same with wool yarn in florescent colors out a large plastic tote man that was a lot then four more . They did that with so many things .
      I tell myself not to do these things as with time somethings are better made colors are more vibrant and popular.
      You sure have some patience doing this over and over and over again wow. You make it seem so simple I might see if I can learn so to teach a grandchild . My goodness thank you

    You are by far the best teacher for tatting. Your method is so clear and easy to follow esp when you keep repeating the instructions like a mantra when you’re doing it. I’ve had my grandma’s shuttle and tatting books for so many years. Tried doing it but just couldn’t as instructions were never clear . Thanks to you , I will try again .

    Funny (to me) story, but my mom always encouraged me to get into yarn art, and kept telling me how quick my fingers were. She was even jealous - But I got so bored with chains and crochet! Eventually, I skipped straight to thread and lace, and learned that my great grandmothers had always been making lace, but my mom thought it was too finicky. She liked her chains!
    She still remembers watching her grandma tatting lace with a shuttle, but never tried to learn it when she had the chance. When I got into lace-making, she hoped I'd figure out how to use the shuttles again. But for the life of me I couldn't find instructions! Just 3 or 4 years ago I bought books, shuttles, and searched for videos as best I could, but couldn't figure out how to join my poor lopsided picots!
    So anyway, I'm going to have the best Christmas present ever for my mom this year. She's once more resigned herself to the idea that this particular art is just lost to our family - but I'll show her! Thank you!!! :)

      No! Bring it back, bring it back! It’s such a beautiful and fun art form. My great grandmother loved tatting, but my grandmother was too “modern“ for it, so she never learned. My mother came along and thought it was amazing and learned from my great grandmother. It completely skipped at least one generation. It’s scary to see how easy it is to lose some thing like this. But, I think there is a definite resurgence in learning how to make lace. I’m so excited that you are bringing it back to your family! (If you get hung up on the knot flipping part, I made another video specifically dealing with that part of the stitch.) Have fun!

      @@BryceHistorically I'm starting out with a friendly size 5 thread, so it's easy for me to see the knots and count/check what I just did, and using a variegated one means my hand thread and shuttle thread are usually different colors - which helped a lot with the flipping. The thread was just what I picked up, but it was a lucky grab. I'm a little over halfway done making a little snowflake from my first written pattern, and it's going well! My biggest issue is just leaving gaps of the proper/similar length between the rings, but I'm just eyeballing it, so of course it'll take time to get the hang of it! I can't wait to level up to some bigger projects. Thanks so much for this channel!! :)

      This is so weird, I just went back through my videos because I was sure I made one about picot gauges. But apparently not! So that video will be coming up. In any case, there are a couple of different types of picot gauges, including using just a pin, that you would pull your picot thread around so that they’re all uniform. When I was learning, I didn’t know about them and just had to practice, but they can be really helpful, especially early on.

    I just started tatting and your videos are so much clearer than I've seen anywhere else. I do have a couple questions. How do you keep the loop on your hand big enough as you work? And my shuttle had a wheel that turns but it is very hard to pull out the thread while working. Is there a way to loosen that?

    • @BryceHistorically
      @BryceHistorically  2 роки тому +1

      You can slide more thread through the knots you’ve made to make the loop on your hand bigger. You should be able to loosen the outside part of your shuttle so that the wheel turns easier. If it’s metal, you can just bend it out a little bit. If it’s plastic you may have to try sanding the wheel a tiny, tiny bit. It sounds obvious, but loosening your grip on it will allow it to spin more freely as well, if you haven’t tried that already.

    Can you see if your stitches are wrong way around like over under or under over?

    • @BryceHistorically
      @BryceHistorically  2 роки тому

      Yes, but it’s kind of hard to describe. A whole knot will look like a pi symbol, or a little house with a flat roof. It will have 2 vertical threads close up next to each other with a third thread sitting horizontally on top of them. The first half of the knot will make the left leg and the top, so if you make a row of only under-over stitches, they will all look like “S” and the tops will each kind of be diagonally stacked on the next one. If you do a row of over-under stitches, you will have the same effect just reversed. (This is one of those cases where a picture is worth a thousand words!) Hopefully, I wasn’t more confusing than helpful. 😊

    I started tatting a few years ago but could never get my loops to close when I pull my shuttle thread. They only closed if I pull the other end of my hand thread which means I've never been able to do more than one ring. I had given up but recently found my shuttle and thread and want to give it another go. Any idea why this was happening and what I'm doing wrong??

    • @BryceHistorically
      @BryceHistorically  5 років тому +3

      Playlist24601 Yep! Your knots aren’t “flipping.” It’s the trickiest part of making the stitch. I go over this really carefully in Part 1. Take a look! 😊 Let me know how it goes.

    • @BryceHistorically
      @BryceHistorically  6 місяців тому +1

      DMC doesn't actually make size 80 tatting cotton anymore. It's still out there though, and if you can find it it is a great size for tatting. One of my personal favorites.

    what is your technique for giving more hand thread as you are tatting? (when the loop,starts getting too small to pass the shuttle through )

    • @BryceHistorically
      @BryceHistorically  4 роки тому +1

      Sorry to take so long to reply. Somehow I missed your comment. So, I use two different ways to do this. The easiest way can only really be done when you are close to the end, with only a few stitches left. I just pull a finger or two out of the ring, starting with my pinky. It adds just enough room. The second way is actually open up the ring with more thread. You’ll want to make sure that your last knot is a little loose, and then holding your stitches firm with your ring making hand, gently pull thread back through from the back, by the first stitch made, with the other hand. Sounds confusing, but it is actually pretty simple. I’ll add it to the list to demonstrate. 😁

    • @BryceHistorically

    If you are left-handed do you have to tatt in reverse?

    • @BryceHistorically
      @BryceHistorically  4 роки тому +1

      I think it’s like playing a musical instrument, some left handed people can be comfortable learning and playing on a right handed instrument, and some people really do better with a specifically left-handed instrument. There’s no specific reason why tatting has to be facing one direction or the other, I don’t think. Sometimes when teaching, I switch hands so that students can mirror my movements rather than trying to copy in reverse. If you’re left-handed, I would probably say try both ways and see which way is most comfortable for you - which hand you can flip that knot easiest and go with that one.

    Do you recommend any places to get tatting shuttles?

    • @BryceHistorically
      @BryceHistorically  4 роки тому +1

      Yes! Lacis (Lacis.com) has a lot of beautiful shuttles, both online and in their store. If you want something heirloom, antique, or artistic, they’d be my first choice. But, if you’re looking for more economical than antique, etc., you can find nice modern shuttles (my favorite in this category are Clover and Boye) on Amazon, at Joann’s Fabrics, I’ve even seen them at Walmart and our local quilting store. 😊 Hope that helps!
