Sonkran is like the Hindu Festival sankraanti .. makar sankranti to be precise. That is where the word itself comes from I believe.
Yep. Thai is a heavily Sanskritized language. It stands out among all the Hindu-Buddhist cultures of SE Asia. Everything up to Vietnam could have been a major Indian regional culture, just like those we have within India today.
But then Achara said Sonkran is celebrated in April. It's similar to south Indian new year festival Ugadi (Yugadi) similar to Vishu/Bihu festivals celebrated in March/April. People play with water in Ugadi as well in India.
@@woodsandcreeks yeah I read an article in the newspaper about variants of sankranti celebrated around south asia, in that sonkaraan was mentioned. The name is similar to sankranti. There are elements of holi in it too. Plus it's their new year, around ugadhi/gudi padwa. So apart from the name the festival itself draws from many others, I agree. And it were the southern kingdoms that exported Hinduism to other eastern asian nations, so similarities aren't surprising.

Crowdfunding a youtuber to travel around a list of countries and get in touch with Indology dept.s in universities, covering elements of life that have hindu roots is something that should be a first step in this journey of thousand miles. IMO.
@@woodsandcreeks The retarded colonial Gregorian calendar that we continue to use is the reason behind all this confusion. These festivals are all based on the Hindu lunar and lunisolar calendars. But you're right, Thai Songkran (also Cambodian, Vietnamese, Lao, Burmese, North-East Indian etc.) and equivalent festivals are more like Bengali Shonkranti, Assamese Bihu, or Kannada/Telugu Ugadi. All are basically Hindu new year festivals celebrated on Mesha Sankranti, not Makar Sankranti. There are several Sankranti dates every year (at least 3, iirc) with different nakshatra rashis/zodiacs. These are sidereal astronomical events, not the birthday of an imaginary person which continues to dictate time and date for all of humanity till this day.

See, how diverse? But Bollywood , being primarily dominated with North Indian , and sometimes North-West Indian sensibilities show the practices of only that part of India. The rest of India is slightly different , and it has nothing to do with religion, just culture.

in india we too have new year called makar sankrat , celebrated with exchange of sweets made up of jaggery and sesame seeds , and flying kytes. mostly in maharastra
Songkran sounds so much like Sankrant (Makar Sankranti). And it begins on 13th of April same way like Baisakhi where many parts of India observe new year or harvesting of crops. South East Asian countries are definitely connected to each other in terms of their culture!
