17:9 R3D MQ 40fps
800 ISO f2.0-2.8
SIGMA ART 18-35mm + 50mm & Helios 44-2 58mm "Zebra"
TOKINA IRND 4 STOPS
firmware v1.1.0rc3
** RECEIVED NEW FIRMWARE on 6/20 ***
New firmware was sent out last Saturday so I went out to shoot with my friend Haley immediately. I decided to play with a few lenses and try to show off some nice skintones in natural light as well as some more harsh skintones. This dynamic test really shows you how the KOMODO treats the highlight rolloff. I am really loving this sensor.
Check out this test footage with Haley Nicole Leary - all shot on RED Komodo at 40fps 6K 17:9 R3D MQ 800 iso. As many of you downloaded the R3D frames I released, it was nice to see the many grading options you all came up with. Thank you, this is my take on the grade with IPP2 High Contrast / Soft Highlight Rolloff transform. I have noticed Komodo color science is very pleasing right off the camera but the ability to push/pull the image with REDCODE RAW is one of the reasons I love RED cameras. Great highlight detail retention - you can really notice it in this test because I had Haley stepping in and out of various natural lighting conditions to really try to get some harsh lighting scenarios in camera. Shot on Sigma ART 18-35mm & 50mm and my Helios 44-2 58mm “zebra” all using Tonika IRND 4 stops.

Thanks a lot for sharing the footage Tim! Looks great!
Q: How did you stabilise the footage since neither the camera or the lenses have IS? Looks smooth :)
@@TimDaust Dope! Thanks Tim and looking fwd to more goodness from the Komodo. Stormtrooper order is in the pipe ;)
The Helios has a cool look but makes it hard to distinguish what is characteristic of the lens versus the camera / color profile. Did you shoot this on LQ? HQ? etc.
Have one on pre order, genuinely waiting to be blown away by footage...haven't seen clips yet that make me feel that way.
The footage feels like from a good mirrorless camera not cinematic at all.
Where can you order . I went to red.com didn’t see where to order from
@@promoter32 Right now you can pre-order a beta-version only if you are on Jarred's email list from the alpha times but a few stormtroopers apparently will go to the RED online store. Black production models come later this year (if there are no further COVID disruptions)
Exactly the same boat. I don't think it looks as good as MX even. I keep waiting to be blown-away but I don't know if I'd choose this over a Black Magic Pocket, honestly.
@@ronineditor9920 I'm buying it anyway, color science is better than BMP easily. You should watch tims field short with the actress, that is a much better example of what the camera can do. That really sold me on it. I think a lot of it has to do with that the user thinks of as "good" to their eye. I've seen some color corrected imaged that look more like the style I'd shoot in so i think CC has a lot to do with this.
Bmpcc 6k is still the way to go.
I’m not so sure. I’m thinking since the update the Sigma fp might also offer a completing option with the added benefit of a full frame sensor, Leica level build quality, a industry best 4 year warranty, excellent colors and image quality, better battery life, full weather sealing, and an infinitely adaptable lens mount... not to mention true stills capability. I could go on. I’m just saying don’t forget there are other alternatives.
IF the bmpcc 6k had a RF mount It would've been perfect. Using wide lenses with speedbooster is the way to go..
@@angryrabbitproductions1690 I don't know. I'm more into results than specs on a sheet of paper.
@@hindi_baba I'm used to the look of super 35 so that is fine for me. I don't ever want to go wider than super 35
Well, nope.
Is it 2010 again?
lol
Idk if its just me but it doesnt seem close to the look of other red cameras (color science) 🤷🏽♂️
It does seem heavily graded.
Cool tones in the shadows are def. caused by Helios (I have one rehoused from Iron Glass), but otherwise - it does seem like a high contrast curve applied, and the footage was corrected after IR filter
Damn this looks so hacked GH1
It's the dynamic range. Just aint it.
It looks like HiRes Super 8. Maybe down to the choice of the Tokina or Sigma Art?
Be interesting to see something done with Canon, Leica and Zeiss glass.
Watching this on an OLED, it looks pretty darn good for being naturally lit. I dont know what kind of people are saying this looks like 2010 or like an average mirrorless, but it just goes to show that people are overestimating their ability to judge footage, or maybe everyone just started shooting on Alexas.
More than anything is the price, 6000 dollars for something that is similar to a Black magic 6k, of course talking about color science. For that price I could buy a C200mkii, although it seems interesting the fact that the global shutter on the RK I do not see some reeelevance towards other models with lower prices, the RK has 15 stops of dynamic range, although we are honest all the brands of cameras make their measurements according to a rather dubious criterion, some cameras modify the color curves a lot to make it more favorable in their own measurements, I am not saying that it is a bad camera, not at all, the only thing I am saying is that RED lately does what The apple brand inflates the price of its products a lot just because of brand recognition, if RED really wants to be in a space for INDI cinema and independent filmmakers, it is arriving very late and with an exaggerated price, let's hope it is not Something like your scandal from Red Magazine that really has recycled components of less cost or defective sensors or some of Sony but of less top models.
I have seen lots of footage from other RED cameras that made me say wow, but sadly haven't seen any from this one yet. I guess I'm not alone.
I can get footage that looks like this with the canon 70d. Can you do a video showing some of the actual features like the auto focus? Or how about af in the hfr modes
I hope you realize the autofocus is still in an infant stage. Red has just started working on the implementation and is working on improving the algorithms as we speak. So the test you see now of it will not represent how it will perform in say a year after release or at release.
red always knows how to disappoint us
Was this shot on the Panasonic DVX?
lol
Hm, I’m not sure if it’s the grade, but the greens look very Sony-like. I’d have to bring those down in post if that’s the natural way this camera works.
Girl looks good... so yeah, camera is doing its job ! This is a good camera to the Red Line up, especially for scenes that have very fast motion like camera flashes or whip pans etc. Also you CRANKED the saturation, and had high light roll off kind of hard but image still looks balanced. IPP2 is wicked! I'm getting a Gemini pretty soon, can't wait!
Lol at the haters complaining about this image. Maybe clean the phone screen you’re watching this on😂😂😂
Looks great. The Alicia keys performance at bet awards Sunday looked even better.
I cannot wait to get mine!
I’m gonna guess this is realistically 12~ stops of dynamic range. Definitely not close to the 16.5 stops Red is claiming. Compare this footage to that from a true 16 plus stops of DR capable cameras such as the Canon C300 Mk3 and you will understand why I say this. Keep in mind, the Red is using NDs in these shots. I do not dislike the image. But the dynamic range puts it squarely in the prosumer space.
What is your opinion based on? If it's based on this video, you should probably note that grade was done with the high contrast setting in Redcine-X.
I have to admit this blame the grade thing is getting old. When the Michael Bay Super Bowl commercial came out many noticed the same thing. The blame was assigned to the grade being heavy handed. I don’t think I’ve seen any footage from this camera that convinces me that this camera is actually capable of 16.5 stops of DR. Honestly, have you? If so please post a link. I’m on the waiting list and starting to feel that might be a mistake. I’m open minded, but I remain skeptical pending footage that proves me wrong.
@@angryrabbitproductions1690 You're right. No RED can deliver 2 stops more than Alexa rated at 14 stops. Not that it matters. The Komodo is right there in the 12-13 area by the looks of footage available, which is still good at this price point.
@@itsjantore agreed. Anything around 12 stops or higher is great
Jan Tore Sorensen at $6k price point? Don’t think so...not in 2020
Finally some skin tones! very niceee
Thanks for sharing this footage, Tim-- looks really good. (And while we can have honest discussions about the pluses and minuses of the image and body design, hope you keep ignoring the haters!)
Thanks for the tests Tim! Keep it up, can’t wait for my Komodo.
How you achieve that perfect Focus in gimble shots😳??
Thats not a gimbal, it's a monopod!
The 16bit Redcode shows up the filmic quality very well here. Not too sure about the Tokina lenses. But it makes me wonder if the 6k BMPCC is any different other than the 12bit colour being lower. I'm sure my observations can become a little bit silly really because I am sure that no one in the picture house or watching NF or ATv are going to notice or care. It will always be down to the story.
Mate ... it’s looks beautiful, nice work considering it’s a run and gun. Lots of cinematic value and loved that you didn’t correct a lot of the harsh hot sun spots and grade back to perfection before uploading. A rather raw look (excuse the pun) of its capabilities.
Def liking this more than your first video and appreciate you posting, but still not a fan of any of the settings in the camera with hard applied to it like hard contrast used here. I don’t care for what it’s doing to the image. Seems like I would be better to shoot in soft contrast and soft roll off and then just add contrast in post if necessary to have a more pleasing result.
You all have to go watch this video on Vimeo it looks alot better without UA-cam compression.
Looks great! love the skin tones. Can't wait to get my Komodo!
Appreciate all the footage. I wanted to like this camera, but the footage is just grainy and I feel I get better quality out of an eosr. I wanted to get this so I don’t always reach for my dsmc2, but I really sadly don’t like the look this camera is putting out at all.
This seriously looks like a6300 footage. I am glad I canceled my pre-order. Dynamic range is not cinema camera level at all either.
No it do not!
Such a beautiful image can you please share a r3d file ?? What about landscape shots with sky and everything, dynamic range??
Lakshmipathi Lucky You so realize he isn’t being paid for any of this and all of it is costing him time and money. Give the guy a little breathing room. I know he is working as hard and as fast as he can.
We are in a time where buying a more affordable option like the Blackmagic 4k/6K pocket camera, will give you an image just as nice as the 6,000 Komodo.
Footage from other affordable cameras look just as good as this one.
How do you know? Do you care about image only?
You can pick up a used scarlet for $3k that looks better
forest witter Yeah but the accessories cost a arm and a leg, you will save thousands of dollars going with this model, because you could use 3rd party accessories.
Not being disrespectful, in my opinion has nothing really impress me , maybe should put a better glass .
This question is in good faith, what don't you like about the footage?
I, personally, am absolutely loving what I see. Is it the highlight clipping on certain shots? I really want to see the bad as well as the good.
To me the sky always retains the blue while I see details in the shadows (unless pointing directly at the sunlight.) The shirt and skin clip at points, but I assume it was graded for the majority of the scene, not the couple seconds where they are clipping. And the roll off is the best I have seen from a RED IMHO.
Then there is an unexplainable X factor to it that I am seeing. Maybe the rolling shutter?
Honestly, this looks like typical Sony footage to me. With one exception, highlight roll off seem better. I see clipped highlights all over the place, softness in even mild shadows. If this is actually 6k footage, it’s a pretty soft 6k. Comparing this footage to 5.9k from the Canon C500Mk2 the difference is glaringly obvious. I agree with other that have commented that this footage looks no better than Canon 5DMk2 footage. In many ways I think it might come out behind the DSLR. I understand this camera is still undergoing tweaking, but it’s getting mighty close to production and in all honestly I’ve yet to see a single frame that has blown me away. Color me disappointed.
@@angryrabbitproductions1690 Thank you. I will go check some Sony stuff.
I guess I won't be cancelling my a7s III order. 😂
Is it 7D.
great camera for $6K, for $4K it would be perfect ! :)
I really like the look of this sensor more and more. I’d has a very pretty look on skin and nature.
The more I see it, the more I like it. (I am really not sure what some of the complaints are about? And I have been in this profession for awhile.)
I am 100% positive I get better images with my canon EOS R. Not Impressed at all.
does the camera has a Still mode ?
Thanks for the share!
Seems everyone complaining about DR obv isn't reading the description or paying attention to the details in the image.
The tone is different then a Arri , Sony, or a Black magic camera it has its own characteristics love it or hate it i like it good job Red
It looks different than the traditional RED as well.
Massive backstep for RED if this is a true representation of what it can do. Looks like it was shot on a T2i! I'll stick with Helium thanks
In all honesty, I get the same if not better footage from my xt3...
Looks great. Thanks for sharing!
Why so muddy lol?
It looks really nice 👍
This looks terrible. Hard to believe its from RED. Looking forward to see better control over new sensor in the future-!
Can you please explain, maybe I am not seeing it?
There’s terrible footage from all cameras, 6k to mirrorless.
Agree; looks like a digital super 8 film dream sequence. Either he's color grading too much, or the camera sensor is weak. Not off to a good start. Red is dead.
ZCam E2-F6 or E2-S6 has way better color science & image IMO. $6000 for nothing special but name brand. I'll pass.............
The form factor and the RF mount make it revolutionary. It wasn't meant to be a replacement for the other REd cameras, it's meant to replace a go pro camera on Hollywood studio sets. Lolz. All they have to do is add a quality LF sensor to the "Red Komodo LF" version in a couple of years, hopefully they'll redeem themselves. Anyway, other people should copy the form factor and RF mount. Hopefully, Canon will have an RF cinema camera soon.
Gorgeous! Camera footage doesnt look bad either.
Thanks for the the post. but my BMPCC6K iQ is still king 👑 hard to beat that BMPCC6K iQ it’s just so Filmic
then try the bmcc 2.5k, it still blows the new sensors out of the water. The pocket 4k and 6K look television- ish in comparison.
I don't know how it compares to other red cameras but it has a filmic look. I like the highlight roll off a lot..
I'm sure It would've looked even better with some expensive glass
Looks nice almost like a black magic pocket
No...no it does not
It looks exactly the same as 1DMark2 with 50mm 1.2 L + ND Filter on.
How much is it
$7000 for early release... $6000 for production camera.
Whats New Here ?
This is cool but the footage from the BM12K BLOWS this away!
Dynamic range looks even weaker than other red cameras, and they are already weakest on the market
Yeah the DR is REALLY not good.
Good image 👏👏
Looks like I could have shot this with my sony a7sii
Comparing to Red One this picture is terrible!
And yet another test confirming that a GH4 is as good as this camera. Man I'm getting sick of RED's marketing gimmicks.
lol
nice
That is 11-12 stops of Dynamic Range. Not good.
the glass looks like crap
I can shoot better footage than this with a Blackmagic Pocket 6k. But this is good quality footage. If I didnt have the BMPCC 6k I'd either go with this or the URSA 12k
画质真的好,对得起这个价格,但是我宁愿用华为P30,哪怕买十台
Good footage but I'm not impressed
seems like a bmpcc 6k's dymanic range, but probably with way cheaper inner parts since it's red's "tradition". The orange shell already show how horrible the paint job actually is, I believe this is another "hydrogen" rip off. The only thing that I love from my Red camera is the 16+ stops of DR. The color science, code, modular, to be honest, many other camera brand inncludinng a lot of Chinese brand already did them with a lot lower price poinnt while keepping the quality at the same or higher level as RED. There are way too much problem/flaw/unreliability with RED camera due to design flaw and extremely cheap materials been used. Don't be fooled by the fancy looking of the camera shell, what's inside is the key for real filmmaker.
The problem is you are not getting anywhere near 16 stops of usable dynamic range from this camera. It looks to be about 12~.
@@angryrabbitproductions1690 lol,I'm not suprised at all, Canon/arri/BMD are the future to go, probably plus some other Chinese brand, no spot for RED in the future if they stays the same path.
What Chinese brands?
Kinefinity and Z-Cam both spring to mind. They are the new kids and already making waves.
Artur Mavlyuchenko check out kinefinity... looks great
