So this is perfect for someone like me! I have never seen the hunger games but I know enough about it because of its vast popularity. I appreciate your insight into each film and love the extra facts that were added. You are giving new light to these films whether it be to someone like me who should of watched these films because it was popular for my generation or to a younger generation that was too young to watch but now is old enough to watch which I love! I would of never even considered watching this series before watching your video but now I am excited to watch at least 1 and 2! I love it!!!

this is a really great video! i’m really looking forward to this series!!
i actually watched all the films in theatres and read all the books when i was a kid, and i remember being extremely frustrated with mockingjay as a whole but especially with the whole split thing. parts 1 and 2 honestly blur together a lot for me lmao.
i think looking at the divergent series would be really interesting, because it’s a case of starting off with weak source material and making them into even weaker films. the story of what happened with the finale is both wild and pretty pathetic lmao. i actually haven’t met a single person who’s seen the third film. if the hunger games killed ya dystopia, then divergent was its zombie

I really enjoy movie soundtracks, even if I don't like the films (Twilight), so I'm totally going to check out the existing Hunger Games ones! I was under the impression that I had seen all the Hunger Games movies but I've never seen the final installment. For a plot with so much bait towards revolution you really think I would remember the ending but it's still eluded me to this day. I rewatched Part 1 of Mocking Jay and was so confused that it wasn't the finale, it definitely drags and leaves you feeling like something is about to happen that never does. Split final installments can work if you have a lot of loose ends to tie up but, like you said, it because very obvious that they were overinflating this conclusion to make more bank. I also agree that the love triangle had no discernable tension between the characters involved and why she didn't end up with Gale, the person she actually chose to spend her time with, feels really forced to me.
Another long franchise I think you might have fun covering is the Bring It On series. I don't even know how many installments there are and after the original cast was dropped after the first really guaranteed there would be no interest in the following films aside from oogling cheerleaders. I think there's 5 of them now? Maybe even more!
I loved your video, I can't wait to see more! Your takes are really well put together and your insight into the industry really helps to connect a lot of the dots for those of us who don't understand how all these projects come together. You look great and I love your sense of humour and use of effects. Can't wait to see more of your work! Take care

As far as I know, there are 2 reasons why she didn't end up with Gale - 1. He killed her sister Prim (he designed the time delay bombs that were used) and 2. He had no qualms about killing innocents in the war with the capital.

My personal Hunger Games timeline is a little bit of all over the place. I saw the first movie when I was at a friend's house and he put it on. I liked it. (This was after the second movie came out but before the third.) Straight after playing the first movie, he played the second one but I was too tired so I slept on the couch while he watched. I vaguely remember hearing the scene with the jabberjays while I was half conscious. When the third movie came out, him and I went to see it. I was intrigued and it spurred me on to watch the second movie which I loved! As a new fan of the movies I was compelled to read the books (which to this day are the only books I've ever read fully.) The fourth movie came out while I was still reading the books. I waited until I was finished with the books to see it because I didn't want how I imagined the book to be influenced by the movie. So Mockingjay part 1, of all things, was the only Hunger Games movie I ever saw in the cinema.

Hey I really enjoyed this vid! I read the books and tore through them. I've never re-read them like I have with Harry Potter though. I read them while listening to Lana del Rey's first album on loop so music has always been heavily connected to this story for me and I also loved the soundtracks. The first two movies are great. I saw them in theaters and it was such an event but then didn't with the last two. Mostly because I knew how the story ended in a less than satisfying way and also because of the bleak character deaths. They just left me sad. I have since seen the 3rd movie but can barely remember it and haven't seen the 4th, although I am curious and do want to eventually. I didn't even realize she came out with a prequel book! I'd love your take on it when you do read it. I did similarly not finish the twilight movies or the books, after being pretty invested initially. I also think I outgrew them.
I find it so frustrating that studios can throw so much money at a project so that the leads, director and department heads make $$$, but they can't take the time (or give the writers time) to formulate a solid story and create a lovable final product. But that's a different conversation when you're dealing with source material.
Another franchise that comes to mind is Pitch Perfect. The first movie is so much fun but then sequel really suffers and I haven't seen the third. I'm excited to see what you do next!

I never noticed that the cinematography was hand held in the first movie.
You’re right it bothered me too that the ended of the second movie she seemed like she was going to wreak havoc but then she’s not directly involved in the third movie in the action scenes and we don’t know her inner dialogue.
Omg hilarious 😆 how you say why does all the important stuff happen well she’s passed out. I never noticed how much she wakes up in a hospital bed.
Mocking jay 2 didn’t even make a sound track or hire a singer? Wow such a Shame!
p.s. keep the bloopers at the endings for your next videos. Loved this review!

  • @des-serts

You're gonna have to cover Star Wars for sure. Other obvious choices are Harry Potter and the MCU. There's also maybe Narnia? I feel like the first one was kind of a big deal and then it just went nowhere. And I'd say LOTR or specifically the Hobbit movies (especially considering the decision to break up the one book into three just to get a trilogy lol) Also as a big animation geek you COULD cover some of the Pixar franchises? It's funny because I think I remember reading once that Pixar said a long time ago that they'd never make sequels so... kind of interesting that that's like half of what they do now. Or as much as you made the joke about HTTYD being perfect, you could do a video on that, or other DreamWorks franchises like good ol' Shrek or something else with more mixed reviews... I love all of the Kung Fu Panda films but I'd still watch the hecky out of a video on that franchise, even if it gets ripped apart ngl.
Very nice work Kyle! I'm looking forward to watching more of this series 😁 I can't get enough of film related video essays these days :P

when i say i was invested in this series, i’m telling you i was *invested*. i was a thg fan from the first movie, and like you, i read the entire series after that. of course catching fire is my favourite film - it’s hard to find any thg fan who is a fan of the last two instalments. gary ross (?) did an alright job with thg, he cultivated a great environment for the actors and crew, the direction wasn’t too bad for the budget in my opinion, and i mean, it was obviously commercially successful. like you said, catching fire was the perfect follow up. but as mjp1 came out, i remember everyone complaining about the timing of the story. mjp1 was too slow, cf was a bit too fast, thg was pretty perfect in terms of length tbh. it was great to see a dystopian, young adult film show the mental effects the protagonist was going through, and while i understand katniss isn’t the type of character to add two and two together and announce it to the world how she got the solution, it just wasn’t a satisfying conclusion to her character. i guess in a way it shows how someone who wasn’t intentional in their involvement (this is why they show her passing out a lot and moving the story behind her back. i think it’s great given she’s only 17/18yo, she’s not that smart, she’s trying her best tho) can proceed through such a story and come out still very much affected. i don’t know where my train of thought has gone but yeah i agree that mockingjay killed the part 1/2 thing with final instalments. like you said, the audience was getting tired of the split endings and that REALLY showed with the divergent series (although in fairness, the divergent series killed itself. came out when media was oversaturated with dystopian ya novels/films were coming out; the sequel (insurgent) was piss poor; the screenplay was weak; character development and love story was bleh. i mean the divergent series killed shailene woodley’s passion for acting, and it was only big little lies that brought her back to life). by the end of the hunger games franchise, it seemed they had put more thought into the marketing and promotional material than the actual storytelling. i remember all us thg fans ate that shit up so good, they fed us well.
also you answered wrong. katniss shouldn’t have ended up with either gale or peeta. shoulda gone to see a therapist lmao

I loved the first film! I was guest teaching at a high school and it's what everyone was talking about, teachers had already known about it and were letting kids do essays on the book. I then watched Catching Fire and honestly didn't get the same rush as the first one. It just felt like...a sequel.
I tried to read Mocking Jay but couldn't get through it, I skipped the last two movies so THANK YOU for this! I totally agree with the love interest - it should have been Gayle (I'm team Jacob, by the way, I never like when the girl ends up with the abuser over the "nice guy") and am kind of tired of seeing a romance in action flicks. When there's a guy and girl, do they HAVE to end up together? There is more homosexual subtext in action films that I would LOVE to see that come to surface, it would feel less forced.

  • @johnnym7575
    @johnnym7575 3 роки тому +1

Agree that having Mockingjay in two parts was a bad idea. I wasn't a fan of the book so seeing it unnecessarily spilt into two parts irked me. I didn't like that it lacked an actual Hunger Game, plus the only person who can get away with spending half a sequel in a hospital bed is Jamie Lee Curtis.
I was glad for your Battle Royale nod. I saw it before Hunger games and had assumed HG would be very similar in its style but they're worlds apart. BR is excellent but definitely not as fun.
Catching Fire is a fantastic sequel. Its got all the best bits of the first one without the additional time spent with backstory. Great characters and lots of action but it doesn't hold the same rewatchability for me as the first one. HG1 is great as a standalone but Catching Fire just feels too middle-y to me. It lacks much of a beginning and is just basically a to-be-continued at the end.
    Thanks for the fun review.
