28mm scale is 28mm from the soles of the feet to the eye level on a roughly normal-sized person... so it is super vague and not at all solid. I like how Dave's hostage claims to be looking at himself on a monitor, when we all know he is actually glancing at Tony, just out of shot, covering him with a pistol so he can't run off.
I always thought that 25, 28, 15mm etc was just the height of a person. This is, of course, immediately undermined by the fact that Space Marines are taller than a normal human.
This is correct, and its what I was going to say. Its eye level on the average height adult male. Which means nothing if the game is goblins and dwarfs fighting.
My son uttered the words ‘Dad, im going to learn to play Warhammer 40k at a mates house’ earlier this summer. Im now down a minimum of £350, have boxes of the stuff still to put together and have 30 marines and a dreadnought being painted. Can i just say fair play to Wayland games, they are best and cheapest place to buy. (Genuine and honest comment, not sponsored.)
The reason i model is to help with my health its great therapy , i suffer with fibromyalgia and carpal tunnel, carpal tunnel syndrome and have had to stop doing mechanics which was my main job and my hobby, i used to just build cars and brush paint them but that conflicted with my ocd as they didn't look right so i started using auto paint in cans , i came across a gundam in my local gaming shop and then started building and painting them which led me into airbrushing, I then bought a box of miniatures (tau pathfinders) as a way to practise my detail brushwork i now have a backlog with all 3 types of model, 7 cars 8 gundam, 4 boxes miniatures and kill team starter box . Im awaiting an asd/adhd assessment and the modelling is probably one of the things that has really helped with keeping myself leveled
This was a lot of fun. And this is the sort of podcast I'd watch. Just a couple of friends talking about nerdy geeky hobby stuff and pursuits of that nature. Having fun. Telling stories. Making jokes. But not so serious that it sounds like a news show or a paid infomercial. Keep it up, I'm in!
Loads of genuine laugh out loud moments in this, quality even if my partner was raging that I'd woken up the cat and he went full zoomies at 1am. Really enjoyed the chill banter between mates while building stuff.
Honestly this was great, some podcasts can feel a bit overly produced, this felt very genuine, came for the warhammer, stayed for the discussion of Snake fisting and pokemon cards
Around 1:09:20, Dave says that he walked back into a Games Workshop and smelled that very strong scent of solventy smell of poly cement and paint and it got the hooks in him. Honestly, I relate to this hard. Having spent a number of years of my youth in a Games Workshop every weekend, walking past the store on the street and seeing the minis on display is what drew me back in - but walking into the store and having all those sense memories flood back from the distinctive smell of the place is absolutely what hooked me. There's really something to that. I do really think that GW should focus their stores less on making sales at retail and more as loss leaders for getting people into the hobby, because nothing ensnares you for LIFE like the experience of being in those stores.
Genuinely really enjoyed this. There's something special about watching 2 actual mates having a laugh about stuff with no staging or secret plan. Loved it and will definitely watch more so please make them!
I love that you crossed the Rubicon Primaris to hobby chat show land. This was brilliant, Chump Change is a great wingman. I wish you guys every success.

That was wonderfully chill and funny - you two have a great rapport that made 90 minutes feel too short. Listening to you explain things to a novice showed how much hobby information we take for granted - scale or mm, historical or fantastical, building, mold lines, drilling barrels, different sprue layouts. More of this please, this is such a relaxing podcast to hobby with.
This is fab, genuinely the best new podcast / video show ive stumbled into in a while. So fun to have that mix of building a model while also chatting a smooth blend of insight and crap. Really entertaining, great listening / casual viewing, 10/10
Good chat. Sometimes I forget how long I’ve been building my little war dollies (that is SO going to stick) and take for granted all the tools and tricks accumulated over the years. Watching someone hunch down and contort their face in painful concentration is both satisfying and embarrassing…I can’t imagine subjecting my friends to such a thing at my behest!
Really nice first episode, Dave (also Mickers 👌). Loved the feel of the topics, nothing too edgy or meta chasing bullshit. The camera work was nice, and the edit didn't chop about too much like a lot of podcasts (it's almost like you do this for a living). My one and only suggestion would be for the "mystery item" section to be a wee bit longer, but i'm guessing first episode was always going to be figuring shit out. Great work as always, and I can't wait for the next one.

The discussion on space marine wangs would have been a good segway into the topic of gene-seed and how one must accept the gene-seed into their bodies so as to be accepted as proper brothers of the chapter. Also, one ancestor of the space marines is named after a poet who famously wrote about his gay lover.
Loving this style of video, it's a great Friday afternoon watch after work. I'd like to see Peachy/Bill Making Stuff/PickleJar/Benji on. They would be a great place to start with guests (If Josh and Benji can make time).
28mm sized figures came out of the continued scale creep during the 1980s and 1990s. Fifty years ago metal wargames figures were generally made in 25mm size which was already scale creep from the Model railway/military modelling scales of 1/72 and 1/76. Those gave foot to top of head heights of 24mm. The first 25mm wargames figures were measured from foot to top of head, but the need for extra detail and ease of sculpting this led to them slowly being sculpted in 25mm foot to eye. Citadel (Games Workshop) (and increasingly others) pushed this scale creep further in the 1980's so that by the end of the decade 28mm from foot to eye(ish) had become the norm. Then during the 1990's "heroic 28's started to appear that pushed the envelope further to 30mm foot to eye and now around 32mm, I think. Confusingly there is a huge variation in the wargames figure size labelled as "28mm" and whilst humans vary in size so that part doesn't really matter it is the difference in sizes of the figures "equipment"!!! which are most noticeable. Which is a long winded way of saying NO 28mm figures are not 28mm to the M, ya numpty :D

“They’re called purity seals actually” spat my drink out at that 😂😂 also can you do some old world/fantasy content? Should definitely read the gotrek and Felix books, they’re easy reading compared to allot of 40k stuff! Looking forward to future episodes, great pod!
Occasional historical wargamer here: a lot of us are the same gits as future/fantasy wargamery people. Plus the people that invented warhammer/40k were and still are all historical and fantastical gamers after all (and half of them also do scale models... and some even Gundams). Ultimately it's all just toy soldiers innit :P

Ironically with all the games, books and TV shows this has been THE worst moment to ever get into 40k. The Company has been getting more and more corporate since going public and FUN has become a tertiary concern of theirs. The name of their game has been removing fun options and extra stuff while increasing the barriere to entry and prices on everything. The "hobby" has become hypercompetitive and overly concerned with balance and rule changes and tweaks every 6 months. Its not uncommon to spend the time and money on a model or unit only for it to become totally irrelevant a few months later. They treat the very physical game like a videogame service and use rule changes to coherce players into buying "the new thing" untill they gimp it to shill for the next new one.
