I guess this goes to show that you have to diversify your immersion content, or that you could always be better. Supposedly in English the avg. native speakers knows like 20k-35k words. We all know that vocab ROI drops off hard, yet ironically you can't quit it because there could always be some rare thing you just gotta know or else you won't fully understand what you're reading/watching. Language learning is interesting...
I remember your video on reading a Japanese book for the first time and I wasn't sure what to expect. I was thinking you would have stronger reading skills than me since your vocabulary was larger. But that wasn't the case or it didn't seem that way. I would guess that I've read about 100 books in Japanese and it was super frustrating but maybe it wasn't all for nothing. I think you should incorporate reading books of some kind into your routine if you want your Japanese to become the best it can be. I love anime though. And just like you I can learn lots of new words from most anime. It's scripted and the writing is very clever. But reading books is just a different experience. I would suggest listening to an audio book while reading the text at the same time - or just doing it on your Kindle using the text to speech option. This works surprisingly well and the Siri voice at least for iOS is good enough I enjoy listening to it (not true of a lot of older Japanese TTS voices).
Another good option is if you can get the book on your phone and use google lens to copy the text, then parse it through migaku reader to making mining easier!
It's simple, vocabulary is not equal to fluency. You are way more fluent than him simply cause you have more experience (im just guessing here, but I bet you could speak more fluently.)
Do you have any occupation other than learning Japanese? A lot of us wish we could dedicate five hours a day to study languages, but how can we find the time (and, let's be honest - motivation)?
Now that you're watching anime again, have you watched legend of the galactic heroes? If you want to mine new vocab, its perfect for you. It's crazy difficult - the vocabulary is just so vast. I'd also recommend reading (it's a lot harder than the anime) bakemonogatari, which also has intricate descriptions and dialogue with lots of rare words
I used my Christmas bonus to buy the lifetime membership to migaku while it was on sale. Their intermediate course has been my first taste of using sentence cards instead of cards with isolated vocabulary and it feels like a game changer.

I can confirm that anime/manga can help learning a wide array of vocabulary. Personally, I've been reading manga since last year (mainly because I have 4 hours per week to kill in the train, so might as well get some work done), and I've been watching anime in japanese recently. I was surprised you were struggling to keep up to 20 words a day when reaching 20,000 cards, as I am currently at 14,103 in my deck and have been on an average of 29 new cards a day for the past three months (52 today by playing Hades). My progress doesn't seem to slow down, actually, I think getting more comfortable with the language helped me to speed up my learning
Your dedication is endless 😅 I've had a hard time sticking to Anki - highlighted by two sick spells, which gave me a good excuse to not do my reviews. I wish I could stay consistent, but it really is harder than it sounds... perhaps I should rewatch your videos on it, eh?
Mans just discovered anime 😭 Haha good decision! I feel justified in my choice to also learn mainly from anime, I actually installed Migaku over a year ago thanks to your videos. I'm now at 5800 words and my goal is to be at 10,000 by the end of the year.
Have you considered going for the Kanji Kentei pre 1 or level 1, I think you'd gain a lot more Kanji knowledge and with the exception of Yojijukugo your baseline understanding of anything new would increase exponentially?
Good luck and I’m excited to see your journey from here! I’ve been following you since I really started being serious about learning ~2 years ago. Your videos always seem to give me a burst of motivation that makes me want to do even more. I actually really enjoy interesting idioms or expressions so I enjoyed you bringing up some you came across. At 16000 words I have come across 10 of the idioms you showed in separate media. Here are some other fun idioms/expressions I’ve come across off the top of my head: 三十六計逃げるに如かず - the smartest thing in a tight situation is to beat a retreat (based on the 36 ancient Chinese stratagems) 腐っても鯛 - a superior product still retains its value even when deteriorated (lit. Even if it’s rotten it’s still Sea Bream) (*I went to Japan and tried sea bream. Can confirm it’s delicious) 指をくわえる - to look on enviously while doing nothing (lit. to hold a finger in one's mouth) 花より団子 - function of aesthetic (lit. Dango over flowers) 来年のことを言うと鬼が笑う - how can we know what will happen next year when we don’t know what will happen tomorrow. There’s no use trying to predict the future (lit. Talk about next year and Oni will laugh) 元の木阿弥 - end right back where you started (lit. Story from the Warring States period when a general died of illness, to hide his death until his son was of age to take over he had a man named 木阿弥, who had a similar voice, sleep in his bed to deceive others)
The problem I have with mining classical literature is that some of the words are really old so nobody uses them anymore or the way they are written is outdated so I save the modern version instead of the old one.
Its legitimately terrifying to me that despite knowing 20k+ words you still encounter that many unknown words in something like YYH. I know an estimated 10k words, around 5k in Anki and 5k outside of it, with a plan on quitting Anki after 10k cards. But when I see this it makes me think I'm still going to consistently encounter new words even after that. Though I guess that depends on the content. I can watch certain anime or UA-cam content and go multiple episodes/videos with next to no new words. In better news, I at the very least knew 四面楚歌 from the list of terms you got from YYH, one of my favorite 四字熟語.
Anime is very very good for mining, especially the harder ones. For example when I watch 遊戯王 I can go 5 to 10 episodes without encountering any new word, but when I watch Psycho-Pass I see between 15 and 25 new words/expressions that I can mine (also 1 to 3 new kanji within these new words). There are definitely a lot of anime where you could keep getting enough words from for a very long time. Spy Family was another anime where I felt like the new word density was quite good. Legend of the galactic heroes (銀河英雄伝説) I would expect to be S tier in terms of vocab though I haven't watched that one yet. 薬屋のひとりごと (both manga and anime) have A LOT of vocab, I was actually kinda blown away that a manga with furigana can be this hard. It's a lot of archaic vocab like 朝餉 for example mixed with this old chinese setting, but actually this vocab came in really useful in a lot of other stuff I watched with simmilar settings (like 時代劇) so it's not like it's useless (also all the emperial stuff vocab definitely shows up in other contexts too). Maybe these recommendations can help you out a bit^^
I feel u on that one. I started learning Korean in early December and I would say that I am at rougly 600-700 words. His Videos are really inspiring, but as a beginner it's also frightening when u realize how much effort and time it takes to get to a high level in another language.
You are INSANE. To think you've been doing this for around 7 years and are still going is insanely motivating for a fellow estonian trying to learn Japanese. Most people say 30 - 50k is the usual amount of words a native Japanese person can speak, so..
I'm at 4118 words and have been doing approximately 30 new cards a day, I'm bound to hit the 10k mark before the end of 2025 but my real goal is to hit it before the 1 year mark of studying. Although realistically I might only manage 8k before that point, because after every milestone I take 1 to 2 weeks off from learning new words (first at 2k and next one at 5k, it helps me with maturing cards). Something about the 10k mark just feels to appealing to have that it makes me very impatient, hence why I have been speedrunning vocab for the past 5 months.
I'm going hard with 16 words and 20 kanji a day to finish core2k6k on 22nd of mar which is my birthday. Even consistently immersing 40mins a day all the words are still starting to feel like a blur, will let you know if it helps. Holding you to the congrats message too hehe
Hey Livakivi I had a question regarding your method of using Anki. Right now I'm going through a premade deck (Kaishi 1.5k) and the way I'm going about learning the new words is whenever I see a new word, I like to write it down on paper with its meaning. Then whenever I am reviewing the words, if I remember it I pass it and if I forget it I will most of the time rewrite the word out on paper and pick the again option to reset the card. Doing it this way usually takes me anywhere from 45 minutes to 1 hour a day with around 10-15 new cards per day. I noticed in your videos you go through your anki reviews and cards really quickly, much quicker than I am currently going. Basically my question is this: Should I stop writing down the words and instead just trust the srs process and repeat the card until it sticks, or is there a better way for me to optimize my current method? I feel it works, but some days I don't like spending so much time in Anki. Thanks!
Woah it's been nearly 4 years since I watched your Duolingo video already. Funnily I now have almost 900 days on Duolingo and it's been the only consistent Japanese learning I've been doing all this time. Due to external reasons, I cold never properly study for more than 60 days straight. However, now that I've finished high school, I'm having a lot more of free time and I'll use a lot of it to fully commit myself to finally learn this stupid language.
Lol, I started the same goal this year, and I'm already at 500 new cards starting from Jan 7th. Although I aim for a bit shorter amount of time which is Dec, 7th (JLPT day) doing 35 cards from Mon to Sat, and leaving Sun just for revision.
Maybe give Mahoutsukai no yoru visual novel a try (from the creator of fate) They really love putting in these crazy words that you rarely see. Also it's not that long (around 24 hours if you don't stop reading to check words)
Simply put, the more I learn Japanese, the more valuable and important I feel it becomes for me! There are still many things that I'm looking forward to doing with my Japanese, and the better it gets, the more confident I will feel when it comes to actually doing said things. While I'd definitely want to know other Asian languages as well, considering the time it took me to learn Japanese to a "good enough" level, I don't know if I want to repeat that entire process again haha.
@@Livakivi but u did tons of mistakes / unnecessary time consumers. exapt of chinese u don t have to deal with chinese characters (and even if u were about to learn chinese, it s still easier. Because... 1word = 1character and the other way around) so you already did the hardest one. but id prefer to see even more along ur jp journey
How you will manage almost 30 cards a day? I have tried this before, and the result was not good, i cant remeber most of the cards, and the review will take 2-3 hours long. It burned me out. Now i have found sweet spot at 10 new cards daily which will only takes me like 30mins-1hour long review every single day, so i can focus more on immersion rather than anki.
Personally for me when I started with 30 cards a day my retention was horrible and I couldn't retain anything (for like 2 months), but stubbornly I kept persisting and after those 2 months it was like my brain had grown accustomed to the pace. Also the more words you know the easier it is to acquire new words, because a lot of the words aren't totally "new", like the word 外国 containing the word for country and the suffix: "がい"/the word "outside". Basically it progressively gets easier.
Some people are capable of it and some people are not. I did 35 a day for 18 months. I can manage it. I have a friend who is like you. If he tries anything close to that his retention drops, reviews take forever and depression kicks in. The trick is you have to be able to do reviews at about 4 seconds per card.
Ah shit, here we go again.
The grind never ends 🥳💀
That's what I was thinking!! 😂 Ahhh sheit here we go agane.

Are you using the FSRS algorithm?
Big fan of this channel. My TL is a European language, so Japanese isn't even on the radar--just like seeing that others are learning their TLs the same way I am!
GL man.. and here im struggling to do 1.5k words lmao (i do 12 a day but i keep skipping a day or 2 and im like 35% of the way there now)
The Grind never ends 🗣🗣🗣
WE MAKIN' IT OUT DUOLINGO WIT' THIS ONE! 💯
you uploaded this just as i was rewatching your video about finishing c6k.. i'm 1.3k words deep in it myself, can't wait for immersion to become less tedious and more fun
I noticed a big boost around 2k and then 4k again provided you are learning grammar at the same time
@@Alex43198 that's interesting to hear, i'm definitely noticing massive progress even at 1k words! also, what was your approach to grammar?
努力家ですね
@@dyschromatopsia Read tae kim's grammar guide and an anki deck to memorize concepts. I have a self made deck but there is a popular one on the anki website too
@@dyschromatopsiaNot the person you asked, but I've had success with going through a basic grammar guide (Sakubi [the one I used and liked the most], Tae Kim's, Cure Dolly, whichever is the most appealing) by going through it a couple grammar points a day. No need to memorize it by heart, just to get a feeling of what kind of basic grammar exists
i personally dont think 10k words in i a year is impossible but at your lvl it will be challenging
Look at him with this graph, I wonder how long he spent on th--
"I spent two hours on this."
Hell. Yeah. Man. I’m going for 20K by the end of the year. Good luck to you. Thanks for the updates.
Your dedication is endless 😅
I've had a hard time sticking to Anki - highlighted by two sick spells, which gave me a good excuse to not do my reviews. I wish I could stay consistent, but it really is harder than it sounds... perhaps I should rewatch your videos on it, eh?
Ok liva you convinced me, I'll join the challenge as well, let's go.
2 video in a week lesgooo
Mans just discovered anime 😭
Haha good decision!
This video has motivated me to finally take learning japanese seriously instead of doing it on and off, which has proven to be unproductive.
Here are some other fun idioms/expressions I’ve come across off the top of my head:
三十六計逃げるに如かず - the smartest thing in a tight situation is to beat a retreat (based on the 36 ancient Chinese stratagems)
腐っても鯛 - a superior product still retains its value even when deteriorated (lit. Even if it’s rotten it’s still Sea Bream) (*I went to Japan and tried sea bream. Can confirm it’s delicious)
指をくわえる - to look on enviously while doing nothing (lit. to hold a finger in one's mouth)
花より団子 - function of aesthetic (lit. Dango over flowers)
来年のことを言うと鬼が笑う - how can we know what will happen next year when we don’t know what will happen tomorrow. There’s no use trying to predict the future (lit. Talk about next year and Oni will laugh)
元の木阿弥 - end right back where you started (lit. Story from the Warring States period when a general died of illness, to hide his death until his son was of age to take over he had a man named 木阿弥, who had a similar voice, sleep in his bed to deceive others)
Oh shit, I thought you were aiming for 30k NEW words for this year
For the love of the grind
LET’S GO LIVA!!
Love ya vids! You inspired me to learn japanese and I've been doing it for the past 6-7 months now! :D
You got this bro!
Maybe these recommendations can help you out a bit^^
the grind is unstoppable
I’m at ~300 words (started doing anki in mid December) and can’t imagine ever reaching 30k words. Good luck, king.
I feel u on that one. I started learning Korean in early December and I would say that I am at rougly 600-700 words. His Videos are really inspiring, but as a beginner it's also frightening when u realize how much effort and time it takes to get to a high level in another language.
I'm at roughly ~1300, started Japanese around mid September last year, it scares me that even at 20k this guy finds words he doesn't know
You're fucking insane and I love it.
You should try Visual Novels!!
You absolute madlad
You are INSANE. To think you've been doing this for around 7 years and are still going is insanely motivating for a fellow estonian trying to learn Japanese. Most people say 30 - 50k is the usual amount of words a native Japanese person can speak, so..
You will reach levels of nihongo jouzu incomprehensible to the mortal mind.
Hello Livakivi I believe you
Letsgo you are motivating me to push harder too.
So far all your videos were inspiring (as well as extremely useful).
This one is no longer inspiring, but rather fascinating.
You inspired me to learn a language.
thanks goat!
He's going even further beyond!
Thanks!
this video is giving me vibes of "gotta catch em all! POKEMON!"
How about taking on a new Asian language this year?
Now i have found sweet spot at 10 new cards daily which will only takes me like 30mins-1hour long review every single day, so i can focus more on immersion rather than anki.
depends on the person. It takes me 1 hour every day for 28 new cards a day. Maybe he can do it in 45 minutes or less.
The trick is you have to be able to do reviews at about 4 seconds per card.
can you give your 20k anki deck ?
oh i've never seen people who study Japanese by watching ゆるコンピューター科学ラジオ lol
He yearns for the grind…
next year chalenge: read a japanese book in a day
2030: WRITE A JAPANESE BOOK IN DAY
time to liva your kivi at the door. Its go time bby!
