      That was pretty fast emergency stop actually, the train wasn't going very fast, in some cases it'll take longer to stop

    • @edhoc2
      @edhoc2 6 років тому +7

      But now the train blocks the crossing, if help would be needed from the other side (for example, an ambulance), then it would be bad and it has to go a detour. The train should stop at a position after the accident.

      edhoc2 Well, I guess that's one more reason why you shouldn't put your car in front of a moving train!

    • @Elodea
      @Elodea 6 років тому +15

      edhoc2 In many instances, the head end of the train might be 2 miles from the point of impact with another mile behind it. In some parts of the country 15,000+ ton trains are 15,000 feet long.

    I can't comprehend why a person in a vehicle that "gets stuck" on a track with an oncoming train like this can't figure out they can use their big powerful car to move the flimsy signal arms out of the way so they can get off the track before the bigger and more powerful train smashes your car to bits.

    • @GentleRain21
      @GentleRain21 6 років тому +36

      From where it's sitting, there may be a car in front of the van, in front of the arms. Could also be true of behind. Also, could be driver panicked and froze (except, thank goodness, for getting out). The news stories say essentially nothing

    • @NotSoCrazyNinja
      @NotSoCrazyNinja 6 років тому +86

      If my car was on a track between two gates, my thoughts wouldn't be on fines or damages to gates. My thoughts would be getting the heck out of that situation before that train creams me. Gates can be replaced. If someone is in my way, well I will be plowing them out of the way. All damages can be settled after I'm safe.

    • @GentleRain21
      @GentleRain21 6 років тому +8

      There is a stop light in front of them, and there may be a car - it slopes down to the right. Could be one sitting there waiting to turn right - at nearly every light in town, there is a No Turn on Red sign - but it looks like the traffic on the cross street keeps going, so their light must've been red - and with the slope of the road and the hedge, it's not clear if someone was there.

    I am a retired Road Engineer off of the Union Pacific RR in New Orleans. It took from the impact at 0:39 to 1:50 to come to a complete stop. Although this was a loaded train it was relatively light as loaded trains go. If the containers are fully loaded they are only about 25 tons each. So the gross weight of each compartment is around 75 to 80 tons with two loaded containers. As compared to a loaded grain, coal, or oil train etc is 141.5 tons per car. After impact the three locomotives and 50 compartments crossed the roadway. So the train traveled about 3,400 to 3,500 feet after the impact before stopping. I believe the engineer had put the train in emergency before impact. Probably 300 to 500 feet before impact. I was listening for the emergency application but could not hear one. It was probably drowned out by the horn.

      Not entirely true. Railroads rarely seek damages in cases like this. They do pursue vandalism and damages by customers though.
      It’s only been recent years that railroads quit paying families of crossing incidents. NS would almost immediately give a family money for funeral expenses. It’s to my understanding the BLE requested these funds go to railroad workers to help them recover from watching people get squashed like a bug.

They're posted there to prevent train/auto collisions, but people do it regardless thinking that this sort of thing will never happen to them. At least they were smart enough to bail out and run before the train hits their car. The impact of the train is surely going to be felt on their insurance bill.

    The general public just doesn't realize it takes over a MILE to stop a long Intermodal train, which I assume also had a DPU and was running maximum track speed. STOP, LOOK, LISTEN and LIVE. Oh, when caught in this situation, RUN TOWARD the train, as when it hits, the vehicle it hits will be propelled the same direction the train is moving.!

      Time for some math someone mentioned it took 44 rail car lengths for it to come to a stop, I imagine those are 53-foot containers so the rail cars will be about 60-foot long. So that's half a mile right there in all likelyhood the engineer would have slammed on the brakes way before he hit the car so we will add a quarter of a mile for that. So this one took atleast 3/4 of a mile to stop.

      @@seahorsecorral Even better still, don't drive across the railroad crossing unless you can make it safely to the other side in 20 seconds or less and never while the signals are active! I would say more than 1/4 of the crossing incidents I was involved with were people who stopped on the tracks at a red light adjacent to the crossing. The whole concept of leaving an intersection open in case conditions change is foreign to people. If it's a busy intersection, they will block it and cross traffic can't cross. If on the other hand it's a railroad crossing, I assure you the train is going to cross anyway.

    VERY lucky to be alive! If you look closely someone is fleeing the car in the opposite direction from the train. This is exactly what you are supposed to do in this case. No matter what the reason for the car on the tracks, these people avoided serious injury and most likely death. This should be a great training video for Operation Lifesaver!

I see the poll go down on the opposite side, but not on their side where they enter. Also, yes. It is better to drive through the poll than to leave the car there to be crashed into.
