I noticed at 5:08 that the speedometer is from the Malaise Era. It reminds me of the 85 mph speedometer in the 1980 Oldsmobile Omega, because 45 mph is the midpoint in the speedometer range. The regulation that limited speedometers to a 0-85 mph range was removed sometime around the early 1980s. The speedometer of the 1984 Mazda 626 topped out at 120 mph.
While the national speed limit in 1992 was only 65 mph, a speedometer topping out at 85 mph looked archaic and clashed with the sleek and cutting-edge look of the Taurus.

The fact that these still look nice and modern inside and out after more than 32 years is testimony to the hard work of Ford back then. 24 mpg mixed driving, comfortable, and reasonably safe.

My aunt gave me her 1992 Sable LS station wagon. Sky blue, keyless entry, digital dash, electronic climate control. The car needs the alignment and a new paint job as well as the interior cleaned. I prefer the Gen 2 Sable over the Gen 2 Taurus because starting in 1992 they dropped the digital instrument cluster on the Taurus but kept it for the Sable factory.

A lot of people have some nasty things to say about the old Taurus, but I respectfully disagree. I still have a '92 3.8 liter LX and love the car. I don't ever plan to sell mine.
The Taurus saved Ford in the 1980's and the '92-'95 Taurus was more popular than any other sedan. They out sold Camry & Accord. These Fords were the first American cars designed to go 200K. I still find them in salvage yards.
My wife & I have owned 7 of them since the 1980's and have had very few mechanical problems. In order to keep the AXOD transmissions going, you had to change the filter & ATF at 50K and to drain and replace the ATF about every 25K thereafter.
My '92 LX is easy to service and repair, generally high quality and comfortable to drive after 25 years. They don't deserve the bad rap.

Stephen Littlefield I was born in April 1992 and aquired my great aunts 1993 Ford Taurus GL 3.8L V6 in 2010 at 18 year's old and love the car and have been given news that the original engine in it has been given a limited life and might blow up in week's or years it's really unknown how long it will really last until it blow's up it stalls out at red lights and stop signs 😓 have a thought that popped in my head about swapping out the tired old engine out and putting a Ford 302 small block engine in it and swapping out the front wheel drive transmission for a rear wheel drive transmission from a Ford explorer two wheel drive or Ford ranger two wheel drive

They did not outsell the retail Camry, not by a long shot..by 1993, most Taurus were rental cars, and the Camry became , and remains to this day the nest seedling car in North America ..ya they're so great that I can't remember the last time I saw a Taurus of any vintage worth a 6
pack of high life, complete trailer trash status.

The one thing that the Tauruses had that none of the Japanese cars had was that lever shifter. The reason why I tended to like American midsize sedans more than Japanese midsize sedans is because of the shifter on the steering wheel. Oh and I also like the Taurus because of Robocop. And yes, I am fully aware of the Taurus's problems like the transmission issues and the headgaskets that blow on the ones with the 3.8 litre V6 engines. Alfa Romeos also had problems too and yet, they are still great cars.
