Wow.
You are really smart!
That's very nice.
I'll subscribe now.
Thank you.
you forgot have sex on shrooms but I suppose that's optional

this killed me lmao

WHAT?!
"I'm gonna try and pick up some dudes."
Science!
Gotta say, his cruising technique might be a little too subtle.
This is too early, it's easier around 7pm during the happy hour
This type of content is 100% why I subscribed, although I’m a musician and have long enjoyed everything you release, this is what drew me in to your UA-cam channel. Thanks!
This is a great video
He said "recently deceased"... I'm guessing it was *very recently.*
Keyword meth?
@@rhetoricmonkey Is that a special new kind of meth?
I love that your just as knowledgable about cicadas as about music
Alrighty then, I'm off to Google "how to extract mercury"
One of my bandmates is a chemist, my neighbour, biology student, collects (mostly venomous) critters of all kind. I'll assemble a research team.
🤣😂😂 for both replies👍😵💫😵💫
Distillation setup ran through a condenser.
Lol, is the mercury there because of modern manufacturing though? Back in the day they were probably tripping out on these things, I know they eat them somewhere.
Dude might be anti-d_ugs, but that ish seems like 🔥.
I'll watch anything you post, but your noise-adjacent sciencey posts have quickly become my favorites.
The bat stuff with the ultrasonic microphones and the heterodyne method blew my mind.
To me it seems like every topic you curiously dive into, just easily translates to authentic and entertaining videos for the viewer. So as long as you choose to produce content about stuff that really matters to you, I’m certain that I will enjoy it and that it matters to me too.
Yep. I was going to say something about preferring content related to music, psychoacoustics, or the music industry, but honestly, Benn, no matter what topic you tackle, I’ll bet it will be interesting.
You could literally talk about anything and we’d watch, it’s your personality and style of presenting information of all types that draws us in!
rizz
That warbling from the background, is that cicadas?? Jeez!! Sounds literally like cosmic energy flashing through radio antennae. How cool!!!
4:15 “ima try to pick up some dudes” classic Benn pickin up dudes
Millions of years ago (or whatever), some bugs grew some things that could click. The clicking attracted mates. But when some bugs clicked them a particular way, they attracted mates more successfully. The ones who got good at this were good at it in part because they had things that made it easier to click in a way that involved constructive interference. This led to more bugs being born with a higher likelihood of having things that were better at making the sound in this way, and therefor a higher likelihood that they would actually make the sound in this way. All from small, random mutations.
Evolution is the most impressive and mind blowing thing in nature. I can't properly express how awe struck I continue to be by it, whenever I really think about it. So simple and so perfectly resilient.
> "But when some bugs clicked them a particular way, they attracted mates more successfully."
For some reason i was expecting this to turn into being about musicians 😏.
"The most successfull bugs started grouping up, and others would come to listen to them. Shows got bigger and they could soon live off of entrence fees ..".
Agreed, evolution is fascinating. a continuous loop of randomness (mutations) + "survival (reproduction) of the fittest" is all it takes to create the weirdest yet sustainable outcomes.
the best music channel on YT
Benn Jordan, and Benn Jordan people, are the people that I want a community with. You’re brilliant bro!
Hear hear.
In my country it is now illegal to posses cicadas with the purpose of consuming them
Lol
Hahaha Alabama 😂
That has to be law?🤮
Hell yeah! I love your sciency vids!
Although I was terrified for the greater part of this one because flying insects freak me out like nothing else on this planet, but still really enjoyed watching it
Hey Benn -- the predator avoidance explanation for the primeness of their emergence cycle is not generally believed to be the real cause -- if you check the wikipedia page, under "predator satiation survival strategy", it says that the currently most widely accepted explanation is that the broods have these long prime cycles to prevent genetic hybridization with other cicada broods, the point of which is apparently to guard a difficult-to-maintain genetic evolution that helped the cicadas weather long rough patches of time in their earlier evolution. Check out the wikipedia article and the linked paper (currently reference #24). It's not clear to me from the wiki or the paper if the predator avoidance also has some weight, but I thought that was interesting. Thanks for the video!
Interesting theory, but I am thinking this would only apply where species overlap? In my observations they seem quite territorial sticking to the same trees for yearly broods, but I don't have competing species in my area. Maybe there was historically when there was more trees, but also the calls of some species are quite different so that is another curiosity.
@@BatteryCoverMissing Yeah I have similar questions... but check out that paper if you didn't already. I think they're talking about evolutionary time where things may have been different, and/or an effect that came from borders between brood territories, etc., but I'm just speculating from memory. It's a fascinating question, and an amazing creature.
Just want to say: This is how you argue on the Internet. 👍
@@CaseyConnor haven't had time to look at the paper yet so cheers for the synopsis!
A lot of animals have eyes that look like ours, but no animals seem to have monolids. Is That what you're all so disturbed about?
Your channel has become something amazing. Keep up the good work
Love the field trips, dude. Great work!
Glad I'm not the only one who finds these little fellas this fascinating. I spent a few hours during the last emergence in my area setting up some recording equipment in my backyard to capture their "song" for creating some ambient music.
Huh, guess you didn't post any on your UA-cam haha, definitely was nutin about that 13 years ago 😅
@lNOFXlCronier last emergence where I am was 2021. I have the ambient drone of the cicadas and some bits and pieces of music, but nothing is complete. I was occupied with mixing my old band's demo, now playing in a new band and working two jobs, so unfortunately, this idea is gonna be on the backburner for longer.
Us too!! 🤘🏼We recorded the cool “ wave effect” sound flowing in the trees driving down a rural highway straight-away ( for a sound-byte , probably eventually)😊
@@JulieLHessler it's such a surreal thing to listen to!
The golf analogy killed me! Bugs are so cool!
I love when you share more areas of interest. It's always fascinating, and your perspective is unique, among other reasons because of your expertise but also importantly your compassionate and attentive approach expressed in everything you do.
this was great! you did a better job talking about the chemical composition than most articles that wrote about it!
Insect dating tips finally someone is filling a long needed niche thank you Benn!
always good to learn new things in less than ten minutes. thanks for this benn!
Last brood in KY, I learned that cicadas are attracted to the clicking sounds of airplane brakes cooling, even if it burns them. I also learned that, for some reason, they love the high pitched whine of the APU and fly right for the intake manifold. We changed a couple of APUs that season. Each one choked to death on crushed up cicadas.
An APU as in a processor? I just read we're due for a double brood emergence. First time in 200 years so that's neat.
@@joeszymanski3540 Auxiliary Power Unit. It's a little engine that sits in the tail of the airplane that makes hot air and electricity
@@DJ_Dett oookay that makes more sense lol.
I remember the Brood 10 emergence in 2021. That whole summer was nonstop noise from morning to night. Excited for Brood 14 next year.
That was very nice! I effin’ love cicadas and honestly I don’t care what videos you do. I love synths, I love sounds, I love tech, so, keep on keeping on!
Big fan of these wild deep dives into new topics, I came for the music, and stayed for the fun wacky science. 🤘
As someone who has been listening to your music for 15 years and studying entomology for 30 years this was really fun lmao
i had no idea how cool you are, i only found you from your great music over like 12 years or so ago. LOVE you music man
Wow, that's almost a full cicada life cycle
This channel is one of my favourite discoveries
Really enjoy listening to you dive into all sorts of different subjects. This one is especially interesting as a GA native. Keep it up!
How in the world do you not have a billion subscribers? The production quality, lighting, script, audio.. you're flawless.
this was so fun benn, love when you make vids about your other interests. i would love to see more in the future!
It's a shame that a video on UA-cam just can't do justice to the sheer, all-encompassing, body-slamming volume that it is in real life. It's like falling into a vat of noise.
Benn these videos are such a treat. Your way of combining science, music, and humor is second to none!
I don't know why but this video made me feel reinvigorated. Like a breathe of fresh air or something. Your one of the best at this you really do something amazing every time, no matter what it is.
This was a pretty cool little excursion into the acoustics and general biology of cicadas! I would definitely love to see more stuff in this vein!
Well, you can feel validated, because these are lowkey some of my favorite videos of yours. To be fair, I found you from some of your non-music creation content and then kept watching because I found you to be an interesting person and compelling speaker. So, I'm one of those rare viewers that don't care what you make. I'll likely watch it. But my favorite is the educational type stuff. This or the one about vinyls being toxic being highlights.
I’ve been living in Japan for quite some time and every summer, there’s certain patches of trees you simply cannot stand around in. The cicadas can be literally painfully loud. Even in suburban almost urban areas.
The stick mic holder is the most on brand piece of equipment for Benn. Love this video and love the science and sound facts! So worth the Patreon subscription! Appreciate you Benn!
9:00 I do want more of your unrestrained casual science rabbitholes. It's very fun for me. Honestly, as far as I'm concerned it's primarily what I watch from your videos. Your 'how loud can sound get' video was an amazing gateway drug to the Benn Jordan universe.
I really like it when you explore your varied interests. I'm not a musician so I actually like these videos more than the gear reviews. Your insights into the music world are treasures too.
I very much enjoy hearing your perspective on whichever topic you choose to speak about. I like the way you think and communicate.
We're experiencing the same surge of cicadas here in Lexington, NC. As I'm typing this while working outside from my laptop, I can see at least 10 cicadas lying dead in the driveway, with another one that just divebombed the pavement with an audible *thump*. I've never seen this many in my life.
You never seem to fail at impressing me.
First it was your creative and atmospheric music
Then it was stumbling upon your channel and finally realizing you were one of my favorite artists when I was younger
Then your excellent journalism on gun crime and studies in Chicago
Now this.
Keep doing what your passionate about, it's that passion and genuine interest that really shines through in these videos and I absolutely love it. You provide a strong and interesting outlook on what's important to you and coming along for that ride has been extremely enlightening. Cheers.
Production, presentation, content - you raise the bar every time you post, and then you clear it by a mile. Nice one!
Love this, thank you! I am living in Costa Rica and we have cicadas during the entire rainy season, they are crazy loud during their mating season.
Loved this. You've increasingly become a channel that I look forward to learning something new from, please consider doing more. I enjoy all of it!
I love when you get technical with random things
make whatever tf you feel like it's all excellent. your creative tastes are immaculate no matter what you produce
That was fun. Thanks Benn.
I remember trying to teach English in an un-air conditioned kindergarten classroom in Japan that had a tree right outside the window. It was full of cicadas and so loud I couldn’t hear the five-year olds screaming at me.
Anyone else immediately more interested when he described what we were going to be talking about today? Superposition always gets me
I love how broad the topics on your channel are. As Buckminster Fuller said, " Specialization is for insects".
Your passion that you put into your science videos is what makes them. I absolutely love them all.
I love how evolution casually came up with maths (prime numbers) to allow them to survive. Incredible animals, thanks for this video Benn! Definitely would be interested in more like this
As someone possessed with sinfully severe ADD and a strong desire to never learn anything, I’m always impressed by how easily I can go through any of Benns videos and be very entertained and extremely informed. Never been able to learn so well from anyone else about anything in my life.
I've been mostly watching for your science videos, its always good to see a new educator with a unique personal perspective on certain sciences. I love learning about audio science from a musician
i moved out of the midwest for the first time ever last year and i really miss the cicadas so thank you for this comfort food
Benn has the most interesting content on UA-cam right now.
I am here for the cicadas, the science videos, the music. I dig going along for the ride.
Keep up the great work. Thank you!!!!
Loved the info about constructive interference but it's worth noting it only explains a tiny part of how they reach 100db. Yes, it means that you get twice the amplitude so it increases the overall db by 6 rather than 3 as it would for uncorrelated sounds. So without the constructive interference they would 'only' make 97db of noise rather than 100db.
Anyway great video so more like this please!!
You never fail to produce top tier videos, you're one hell of a guy. Love it
"Flying salt shakers" had me nearly spit out my tea lmao
Bro, so entertaining and I love the video format of containing no gear and only fascination and enthusiasm. Thank you very much.
one of the best channels on youtube, love the random bits of knowledge
YES!! MAKE MORE OF THESE NON MUSIC VIDEOS.
You somehow find topics which would interest me and then make amazing video in your amazing style with your amazing sense of humor.
Every video of yours that I click I intend to watch in the background while I work but end up just sitting and watching the whole thing because it's so interesting. I love it.
One theory for how they know the passage of time is that they can count the number of times a certain balance of nutrients in the tree fluids comes up, which happens because of the seasonal cycle the trees can experience above ground. This can even be sped up by rapidly and artificially (safe for the tree obviously) simulating seasonal change conditions in the trees environment if kept indoors.
But it still doesn't explain how they know how many nutrient cycles to count. Maybe something chemically changes within the tree as well which acts as a signal?
This was great! I really like how it seems like Benn just thinks cicadas are cool and sort of just talks about them for a while.
Would love to see more weird audio science content! Maybe collabs w some of the great maths and science channels on here
i think it makes more sense to think of it not that the cicadas know how much time has passed, rather that by the sheer number of generations with the most successful adults they bred themselves into having a life cycle that just *takes* that long because of a ubiquitous mathematical fact
I really appreciate you making super interesting and educational stuff. The world needs more people like you in it and it needs more videos like this in it.
I actually prefer these types of videos over your normal music videos and it's how I first came across you. They just tend to cover topics I'm more interested in. But it's all great.
Hey Benn! Loved the video & the different content personally. As someone who delves more into electronic music myself, I tend to get pulled toward technology, the mathematics of sound & I guess the "how to make your next kick in so & so plugin!" content. Seeing a video tied to nature & how sound is naturally made in our world around us & how it functions is equally fascinating imo, but not delved into as often.
I love it when people use their honed skills outside of the typical application! It would be super interesting if you made more videos that were not focused on music production/industry!
reminds me of the fish flies around here. the only real noise they make though is the crunching under foot. this was fun, Benn, thanks.
I love your exploratory, off-the-wall content
Good fun! Covered lots of facts I saw in a Real Science vide on "the weirdest insect", but with a much more amusing take. Shaking up the show rhythm sounds like a worthwhile pursuit judging from this first effort. Improv is the soul of music, after all!
One of those times I miss WV. That sound used to put me to sleep so quickly at night :)
Love science and love your presentation style. I think it’s a perfect fit!
Love the sciencey videos! Always down for more obscure hyperfixations.
This video was my first exposure to this channel and I really liked it! I love the more chill vibes while also being informative and clearly a subject you care about a lot. It reminds me a lot of the earlier days of UA-cam or content creators like Tom Scott. Would love to see an update on the cicadas you captured!
Big yes for bio and science videos! I actually wished this one was longer and more detailed cause I love it
[validation]
Yes please, more of this.
@Herfinnur
I drove through some fields today and noticed for the first time that the crickets where loud enough that I could hear them in my modern, closed car with music running. Those cicadas must be absolutely horrifying
there's a lot of acoustical things going on with the tymbal, the physical effect might be constructive interference but they're in sync cuz the whole dude is resonating, they're locked together. there'd be all sorts of much cooler and weirder sounds to hear if they weren't, they'd also have complex emission patterns (inverse of like, a cardioid pattern in a microphone)
It would be cool if someone made a tymbal simulator plugin vsti where you could desyncronize it and use it as an oscillator
Totally dig all the science-y videos, whether or not they’re 100% music related.
I miss cicadas :( grew up on the East Coast. I now live on the border in Texas directly under a border patrol flight path. Helicopters are definitely more annoying than cicadas. At least those bugs don't buzz your house at 3am
As much as I enjoy your music content, these unrelated random videos are my favorites
Absolutely! The weird stuff non-music / industry vids are rad. More please.
I love how your channel has evolved over the years
Validation beam! I love the way you present information, Benn, having more science focused videos from you would be tremendous. Your video on The Hum is one of my favourites.
this was a wonderful surprise. more videos like this would definitely be fun
Worth mentioning that the Massospora cicadina fungus that affects Magicicada is not a hallucinogenic. It is a stimulant (plant-associated amphetamine, cathinone).
I'm not a music production nerd but a nerd in general. Keep up with the great content.
love these more random out there videos and experiments, always a bunch of fun facts to learn
I validate you! :) Being an insect guy myself, I really enjoyed this. Thanks Benn!
I love those little guys. I informally measure my lifespan in terms of Brood X, which is the 17-year periodical cicada in my area. I am 3. I hope to make it to 5. It is very unlikely i will make it to 6. Seeing my fifth emergence will be very bittersweet; i will have to say farewell to Brood X.
