  • A selection of my favourite double headed Black Five scenes featuring 44871 & 45407 captured between 2013 and 2016. The majority of scenes are captured on the mainline network. A big thanks to Mr Riley for making these engines available, otherwise this video would not be possible.
    Hope you enjoy.

    Every shot was fantastic--all the different forms of light and shadow. And, of course, the magnificent engines. Thank you so much.

    Great video, you put so much planning into them, I sense that. I know weather is often fortuetous on the day but the shots at 4.10 early on with sidelighting are awesome and atmospheric. Again later in the video you even managed to pick up track reflection. The night shots good also. Excellent quality as usual Liam ... treat to watch.

    The sequences are beautifully filmed, including in fog. The shots from 2.11 of an autumnal double-header are, like so much of your work, professional in quality and could easily be picked up by any subscription or free-to-air television network. Like watching a good movie. The locos are truly magnificent.

      Edmund, glad you enjoyed it and thanks as always for your kind words, a lot of these shots could be described as a touch dated, as we wasn't using our better cameras back then.

    One question though, the majority of the diesel locos on the back, were they 47's or 57's?

    Back in the late 50's on still summer nights I would hear the black 5's setting off from the Bidston iron ore berth with a huge rake of hopper wagons to go to the Shotton steel works. It was an amazing sound as they got up speed. They were replaced by diesels working double headed. The only problem was they sometimes failed to decelerate enough at Shotton junction and derailed. The diesels had to sound their horn to get switched back on to the main line if they thought they wouldn't make it.

    Horton in Ribblesdale - that has got to be one of the most stunning bits of railway footage I've ever seen, the cloud slowly building and advancing towards us with the train, until it envelops us then clears. Watched it twice!

      I can only think of four Black Fives that were named in preservation.
      45428 'Eric Treacy'
      45407 'Lancashire Fusilier'
      45231 'Sherwood Forester'
      45305 'Alderman E Draper'

    Why are they called Black Fives?

    • @SecondValveSteam
      @SecondValveSteam 8 років тому +1

      Their power classification was 5MT (Mixed Traffic), and all of the class were painted black. Although some sources say they were nicknamed to distinguish them from the 'Red Fives' (LMS Jubilees). Hope this helps. Cameron

    Absolutely superb! The compilation was a great idea. I loved it!
    But I have a question. 45407 seems to have a nameplate.
    When I was a keen train-spotting kid, in the late forties(!), I don't think any Black 5 had a name (or nameplate)...
    Has something changed in the few days that have elapsed since my train spotting?
    Can anyone enlighten me please...

    • @MarshSteamVideosTM
      @MarshSteamVideosTM  8 років тому

      Thanks very much Brian. I guess the owner of the loco just fancied having a named loco. The name of 45407 is Lancashire Fusilier. I can't really answer your question correctly as I was not around in the glory days ! Regards, Liam

    • @briancox3691
      @briancox3691 8 років тому

      Liam Thanks for your answer. Please don't bother to answer this one. It's just to let you know that I shall investigate and inform you if I find the answer.
      I'm certain that no Black 5 was named when they were operational.
      I also think that "Lancashire Fusilier" was a Royal Scot class loco.
      My immediate thought is therefore that the nameplate of a scrapped Royal Scot may have been transferred to 45407...
      Hmm, interesting... for me anyway!

    • @briancox3691
      @briancox3691 8 років тому

      Liam, again don't bother to answer.
      I've investigated this Black 5 names question, partly to check my memory as a train spotting kid, nearly 70 years ago.
      Anyway here goes:
      As I suspected, "Lancashire Fusilier" was originally the name of Royal Scot class 46119 (withdrawn in 1963). How's that for a 70-year memory!
      It transpires that five Black 5s were named during their operational service (I didn't know that, but I still think they were actually named "after my time", and not when first built). And another seven were given names while in preservation.
      So, although I haven't been able to confirm it, it seems highly probable that, sometime after 1963, the former 46119 nameplates were transferred to 45407.
