I'm so glad that they have managed to finish it. Saw it first on grand design and this build really pushed this family to breaking point. I pray it sells for the most that they can get out of it. They all deserve a fresh start. Preferably away from the ocean 🌊
I think the man that was building the home had to sell it to a developer to complete the home in the end. The original builder never owned OR lived in the home. Such a shame to have your dreams taken away from you, just for dreaming to live in a fantasy home.
It’s like they’ve designed a house that would be perfect for somewhere like California/Florida ect, but put it in the UK, where it’s freezing cold 90% of the time. It’s amazing to look at from the outside and has stunning views, but it doesn’t seem like a very practical place to live with the lack of privacy, no garden, threat of erosion and the need for having blinds everywhere, so you can sleep in past 7am in the summer.
I remember seeing it on grand designs at the time it started. It pushed the family to the limits and the guy was on his own towards the end of the show. Hope it was worth all of the Argo, 8 years is a long time.
It's been on the market for over 2 years! Started off at £10 million has since been reduced several times. It's under £5 million now ..still no takers The term 'White Elephant' comes to mind!
This was the second saddest of all the Grand Design episodes for us. We were used to the formula of the show where the owners of the featured property go through all manner of travails and then in the reveal at the end all is great. And we expected the same for the reveal of the revisit but the reveal was like a kick in the gut. The building wasn't finished, and looked like it might never be, he was on his way to a divorce, he was financially devastated and he couldn't do anything with the smaller house he had build next to this property until he completed the main property and that looked like it probably wasn't going to happen. Very happy for him that he has managed to complete it. I hope it will go well for him.

@@shauleen Hi, thanks for asking. There are a few contenders for sad episodes that were sad in similar ways to this one. But for me the episode that I thought of as the second saddest was different in its path to sadness than the Devon episode. That was the ECO Boat episode. The subject of this episode seemed completely unaware of his his lack of skill and knowledge for the project he had in mind. Everybody that he interfaced with told him that what he had in mind was a bad idea and it certainly looked to me like it was a bad idea. As the episode progressed it looked even more like it was going to end in disaster and then it did end in disaster. We like Grand Designs quite a bit and we have watched the episodes we have DVDs for three times or so. However we haven't watched this episode again. It is just too sad for us. As an aside I notice that in 2021 somebody was going to take a shot at restoring the ECO boat. Although I question the use of the word restore for something that never got beyond being a pile of junk I hope it turns out well for them.
Great views of the seascape. The property could perfectly be described as minimalist and a little cold and bleak, particularly so I would imagine during those cold and dark Winter evenings with the wind battering the property in its exposed location. Weigh this property up against what £10m will buy you elsewhere and I'm afraid my money would go elsewhere.
I’m glad that the guy was able to get the property to a sales able condition. I saw the programme of all of the trials of the development. It looks a bit cold to me unfortunately, and the building is north facing. That won’t ever change.
Coastal erosion is a real thing and drilling so many holes in what will be an already precarious situation will just add to the problem, it also won't help the surrounding area as Coastal erosion can still happen 20meters from the coast, this is a loverly house but I bet the insurance is a joke
Very worrying at how close that property is to the cliff, so abnormal weather and they cliff face could easily fall into the sea making the building unsafe. I also fear more coastal erosion over the years so not sure if it's worth the £10m price tag not to mention insurance required!
@@JamesJohnAgar the bedrock it is anchored into will erode much slower than the sandstone on the surface - I suspect the bedrock will outlive the house.

*Update 2024: still unsold and price lowered to £6, 500,000 (USD$ 8.2 million). This is less than its cost. "The Down End Disaster."* 🥺
September 2024 it's now £5,250,000 I went to have a look i had 2 separate surveys done because I was very interested in the property it's got quite a few issues I was quoted between £1.75 to £2.2 million for everything doing including erosion work with epoxy and metal netting I offered £4,250 million because of all the the work and I was over paying at that price but they were adiment at £5,250 they will never get it the owner thinks it's worth more remember it started at £10 million it's nearly half the price now they should have snatched my hand off at my offer as I was a cash buyer and no chain
@mulemule it's September 2024 it's now £5.250 million it needs £2million spending on it I offered £4.250 read my comment
@@patterdale4332 After it sits unsold for yet another year (or more), I hope they reconsider your offer.
Best of luck.
Some say this house is jinxed
There was a unlucky brick installed and only when it has been removed, you can truly enjoy the house and the surroundings
I remember this…. The guys whole life fell apart getting it built
Is there blinds for the windows or something? Because sleep in that bedroom would be impossible
Interior is basic 🤔 sorry
The saddest thing about the house - not that it took so long to build or that it cost so much - but that after all that, it’s for sale
It took 12 years for lack of funding not because of extreme difficulty
Unless that pool is heated….. it’s the Coldest pool on earth
no kitchen?
