- A quick guide on what you need to know before you refill your grow box in your Mittleider garden. The sand does not decompose, so you only need to add more sawdust and nutrients. Add an application of preplant and weekly feed. Top the box off with additional sawdust. Use an appriopriate tool(s) to redistribute the sand and nutrients throughout the sawdust.

Are you not growing in your high tunnel either?
Not until this fall. I’ll have my hands full keeping up with the garden at Jim’s and far more food than we will use and put away.
I plan on building qty=15 18”x30’ grow boxes. Do you recommend installing irrigation first or afterwards?
Great question. First. That allows you to rent a trencher and operate it without the boxes being there. If you put in the boxes first you will have to do a lot of hand digging.
