- A very happy Christmas to you all. Take a moment. Could this be your biggest problem in life? 'There is one vice of which no man in the world is free; which every one in the world loathes when he sees it in someone else; and of which hardly any people ever imagine that they are guilty themselves.' What could it be? A new doodle from the pen of C.S. Lewis.
You can find the book here: www.amazon.com/Mere-Christiani...
(2:03) Pride leads to every other vice. There are three elements necessary for sin - (1) the carnal "lust of the flesh", (2) "the lust of the eye" (i.e. seeing an opportunity), but also (3) "the pride of
life" to complete the snare (1 John 2:16). That is, when the voice of God says "no" to us, sin needs that proud inner statement "Why shouldn't I have it?" or "I deserve it!" to be enacted. This appeal to pride is as old as the Garden of Eden. When Satan there said "be like Gods" (Genesis 3.5), he knew it meant "be entrapped like a slave".
(3:00) The proverb “two in a trade never agree” means that people involved in a particular line of business always believe that they know better than their colleagues or competitors.
See the remarkable Ecc. 4.4: “And I saw that ALL toil and ALL achievement spring from one person’s envy of another. This too is "meaningless" [literally the temporary smoke after you put out a candle), and a chasing after the wind” ( biblehub.com/ecclesiastes/4-4... ).
(4:30) See Isaiah 5.8: “Woe to you who add house to house and join field to field till no space is left and you live alone in the land” ( biblehub.com/isaiah/5-8.htm ).
(7:09) See James 4.6: "But He gives more grace. Therefore He says: 'God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble'” (biblehub.com/james/4-6.htm).
(8:26) See Psalm 16.2 “My goodness is not apart from you” (biblehub.com/psalms/16-2.htm).
(10:50) See Matthew 25.21: "His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord" (biblehub.com/matthew/25-21.htm).
(15:03) Lewis is probably not saying that the indignity was not felt by God (or still felt), nor implying shame did not need to be corrected in glory, but the fear of shame and reproach of man did not prevent Christ from completing God’s plan to the end, and ‘drinking the cup’. ‘For the joy set before him, He despised [counted as nothing] the shame’ like each of us have to do ( biblehub.com/hebrews/12-2.htm ).
(15:07) Jesus: "Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me” (biblehub.com/revelation/3-20.....
(17:31) "Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall" (biblehub.com/proverbs/16-18.htm).
The original broadcast had the following words italicised to match the broadcast which add to understanding (shown in CAPS): “Pride is ESSENTIALLY competitive”, “The sexual impulse MAY drive two men into competition...greed MAY drive men into competition”, “how is it that people...with pride can SAY they believe in God?”, “it comes DIRECT from hell, for Pride IS spiritual cancer”, “that...chap who took a real interest in what YOU said to HIM”, and “If you DO dislike him it will be because you feel a little envious”.
Song: "Humble Yourself" by 2nd Chapter of Acts, made up of sisters Annie Herring and Nelly Greisen and brother Matthew Ward.
You won't believe this but this video legitimately just changed my life.
Up until this point I did not realize that I am/was literally the worst version of a Christian that could possibly exist.
I wanted to be someone so important in the grand scheme of things with so much power to do the works of God that I never stopped to think for one minute that I was competing with God.
By putting everyone else down in my mind through lifting myself up I did the exact opposite of obeying God's law to love my neighbors as myself.
By putting myself into such a place of glory and importance I did not love God the way that he deserves.
Same. When I first read this at a Starbucks a few years ago and where I was in my spiritual walk, it described me perfectly, I had to rush home to repent.
Especially the part where it talked about "not caring what other ppl think"
This is by far one of the best self & God giving realization about one’s self that I’ve ever read. And I’m doing the same myself & I just realized this. Thanx you.
Wow. Great insight my friend!! Thank you for you words. Glory to God!
praying for you man that God reveals so many other things in your life! Praise God He opened your heart :) It was a great learning lesson for me too
Im right there with you
7:10 - “As long as you are proud, you can’t know God. A proud man is always looking down on things and people and of course as long as you are looking down, you cannot see something that is above you.”

Back in 1990 I was struggling with my faith...I pretty much gave up on Christianity. Then I read Mere Christianity. It opened my eyes and I can say it helped me dig into the Bible after that. What a masterpiece.
Jesus, when someone praised him as good, admonished the person and said no one but God is good. Later, you have the moment on the mountain where two previous prophets appeared with him and a voice from heaven said IN HIM I AM WELL PLEASED. Jesus refused to praise himself. He let his Father praise him when it became appropriate.
Once again, CS Lewis is amazing and extricating these truths in far greater detail than anyone I have known.
Jesus, I think, was also possibly saying that He is God, by asking, rhetorically, "You call me good, only God is good."
However, I think that it also served as a lesson, that even the best among us should have humility.
Either way it's a good lesson. And I think we can take both lessons to heart.
This was so enlightening! Thank you for posting this. I love that C.S. Lewis reminds us that humility isn’t about looking like a person beaten down, thinking that they’re a nobody; instead, humility is about thinking of yourself less and focusing on God and not ourselves. It’s such a beautiful reminder of Jesus and His perfect example of humility 🤍
Do the people that look down on themselves and call themselves nobody also prideful? Because if it’s not humility, what is it and how do you fix it
@@cajunchewie9026 Usually when you are saying "I'm nothing", you are expecting or hoping that someone will say, "O, come now! You're not that bad!" It's related to vanity, I think. You cute it, as Lewis said earlier, by not thinking of yourself at all, but rather focusing on God or the person right in front of you.
First off, that song was awesome! Second, thank you for your service to God's people. We really appreciate it. As a youth pastor, pride is such a huge battle in the ministry. With great power comes great opportunities for pride. I'm on the brink of tears just thinking about how conceited I can be sometimes. Comparing myself to others, looking down on people, slandering my brothers and sisters who I serve alongside of. Father, forgive me. I'm sorry. I am nothing. I am less than nothing. Without your saving grace, who would I be? I'm sorry Jesus. Please help me. Change my heart.
I have listened to Lewis forever. Mostly over and over till I grasp the meaning
I may have listened to an essay dozens of times in preparation, but it is surprising how when doodling it for the very last time, I will finally 'get' what that one sentence meant, and have to redraw the whole section ;( It can be very dense material.
This 17 minutes and 25 seconds solves all world problems, whether personal or international!
I have watched this video nearing 10 times, but I should probably watch it every day…
Thank you for putting this together!
Honor GOD Today!
THANK YOU! I actually learned something! I never figured pride was the root of the other deadly sins. I mean, we all know "the love of money is the root of all evil." But I never figured it meant pride. It all fits.
An often misquoted scripture. "For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils..." (1 Tim. 6:10)
It's not the root of all evil, but a great variety of evil. As C.S. Lewis demonstrates, pride is the root of all evil.
When I was an atheist, there were moments I would take delight in the misfortune of perceived opponents, or when I’ve felt the pride of others. These moments were rare (never liked seeing people hurt or punished), but no matter the infrequency it was still bad.
Despite the meekness and politeness I was brought up with, I never noticed that pride in myself. It was a slow process of realisation, so gradual that I can’t pinpoint when exactly I became aware of it and felt shame.
Even though I still engage in much of the same thoughts and behaviours as I did then, they’ve one by one been illuminated by a spotlight. First was lust, then anger, and lastly pride. I don’t consider myself overly prideful, but I still have my moments of it, moments that I never noticed before. Just the other day I was praised for something, and not a minute later someone else was getting more praise than I was; I couldn’t help but feel slighted, but then I realised what I was feeling.
I like to think I’m getting better with them, but even just noticing my vices has helped me beyond measure.
I can't express how much your work here is appreciated! This video has opened my eyes to see how truly proud I am and why God has allowed some things to happened in my life is because in my pride and self righteousness I that I was above it, but God resist the proud. May God bless you and grow this channel
Beautiful gift. This channel is such a comfort and source for my peace and inspiration.
Thank you so much. (And please give me more ways to appreciate you. I don't think simply watching and liking this priceless art is enough. It's not even close.)
Merry Christmas.
Ouuuch. It hurts when the light of truth exposes our sin. But praying for God's mercy.
Thank you; facing pride is like drinking ipecac after ingesting some sweet poison like anti-freeze or sugar of lead. I might not enjoy the process, but I’m grateful for every spoonful.
Chapter 8. This is the chapter that changed my Christian life.
I needed to hear this today….
The sin that is difficult for one to see in their own life except by the work of the Holy Spirit. May the Lord help me. This talk opened my eyes to the presence of pride in me that I'll never see by myself. Thanks for posting
In just little over 6 minutes of this video I have heard more truth then some seminars would bring out in a whole week of time.I will listen to the rest of it later, in quietness around me.... Thank you for this treasure...rare to find these days.
I don't think I've ever seen the devil portrayed as the fallen angel and not "dude with horns and a tail" in one of your videos (although you certainly might have and I forgot) I like how it makes him seem so much more pathetic and low than a devil costume. Have a Merry Christmas yourself too!
This chapter was probably my favorite out of the whole book (give or take) thank you for working on this! God bless you sir
Pride just makes you miserable
Yes!
I struggle with Pride, PLEASE HELP ME LORD JESUS!!!
This is a beautiful video. It is a reminder to us all. To walk in our Lord’s footsteps, to be more like Him:-)
You deserve an Oscar for this...
Love the song at the end!! This series is fantastic!
What a wonderful excerpt to illustrate and so beautifully done! The song at the end is a perfect fit. Thank you so much for sharing. I really feel I need to hear this message regularly. God bless you and have a Merry Christmas and a happy New Year.
Pride the destroyer of souls
Thanks for adding the 2nd Chapter of Acts song at the end. It was a perfect ending (in a humble sort of way).
And it took me back, way back. 😉
These little doodles and these beautiful recitations are a gift and a balm. Thank you.
What a great surprise to hear 2nd Chapter of Acts’ song at the end. Had not heard that one in a long time! 😊👍
Thank you! Excellent! This was the second lesson on pride I stumbled upon today. I had better pay attention! Loved the song at the end.
I came across this wonder in Christmas! What a gift! Thank you so much, and please make a lot more, God bless you
dang i am actually pretty self absorbed! thank you for sharing the insight and wisdom of lewis in such a comprehensible way
I love these videos! These well done illustrations coupled with the great communication skills of C.S. Lewis and his God-given wisdom, allow God to speak clearly to me. THANK YOU!
Man. That was the best one yet I think. I will relish and fester on that for a while before I share. Love it! Thank you!!
"The more pride one has the more one dislikes pride in others.". It's like a mirror effect that pride can use to hide itself from our own sight.
May God help us.
Great song choice for the end!
Thought provoking message finished off with a very cool song, "Humble Yourself Before the Lord".
This was better than all the other psychology videos on UA-cam.
Thank you 🙏🏼
These animations help so much. Thanks!
I just realized that I haven't heard any 2nd Chapter of Acts in my playlist... I need to dig those albums up!
Always nailing these illustrations! Thank you for this! Merry Christmas!
A beautiful message on this fine Christmas 2021. Blessed be!
Strange enough I was thinking about pride yesterday and have we rebranded this as narcissism?...look forward to listening to this.
Nothing quite like a fresh Doodle to start off the New Year. Thank you and Happy New Year! 😁
pride the last to leave, and the first to Return. Humility is the champion over pride. Through Christ Jesus 🙏✝️🙏
These videos have evangelized me so much. Please never stop making them. The fire in my heart for Christ is fueled by these utter blessings. Thank you so much for these.
OUR Ego is the drive behind ALL Sins.
Your “doodles” really bring the messages alive. More like great artwork than doodles. Love the combination and really brings home great truths . Well done.
Great video. Always reminds us of our fallen nature who needs God/ Holy Spirit all the times.
Amazing, thank you for this. It is so eye opening. Just on the eve of Christmas too. 🙂
Thank you for all the hard work that must go into these videos. This one really hit home for me on several levels. God bless.
I keep coming back to watch this video. It's amazing
Thank you for these illustrations and narration on Mere Christianity. I have read this book 2 times but the illustrations really help with understanding it more fully. Best thing on UA-cam!
This is so true! Especially the part which talks about self depreciative people and why they are not humble at all, they are sadly too much focused in themselves.
Bravo! And ending with 2nd Chapter of Acts was a perfect encore! Thank you!
That ending song is so uplifting!!
Thank you, among those who would not read these works, have been willing to watch these videos.
