    "... A device with one purpose, and this is to deliver death and destruction ..."
    You are the first horology commentator that I hear explain so clearly and honestly the true purpose of the creation of these watches. Very well said, and despite that I love the B-Uhr :)

      No doubt the Brits and American's had just as "deadly" a range of devices with which to deliver their deadly cargoes over German cities during the war.

      Ironically an instrument designed to be read on a shaky aircraft while you time the drop of your bombs is just as useful to a medic in the back of a shaky ambulance reading a patient's heart rate and applying drugs at the right time. How times change.

    FINALLY a youtuber that understands the history and intended purpose of this watch! Thank you!
    NO (fighter-) pilot with common sense on either side of the forces would have wanted a 55mm dinner plate strapped to his arm while sitting in a cramped cockpit ... I guess.
    Well done Tim. Well explained. All I can add from my research is that the Type-B (shown in this video) replaced the Type-A (which was also NO watch worn by pilots) probably because the minutes readout was way more important than the hours on the dial.
    I think Laco does a great job of a homage in different price tears.

      Yes! Actual Pilots used the Hanhart caliber 40 chronographs etc, and also Tutima chronographs. I’m sure there could be other brands but I’m familiar with these. Nowhere in the original documentation such as Wehrmacht order forms does the Luftwaffe refer to these as “Pilots watches” but as a “B-Uhr” = Beobachtungsuhr = observers watch.

    Nice explanation of the B-Uhr developement. Good that it’s done by a native German speaker. Most reviewers butcher the German manufacturer’s names.

    Hi Tim. I'm a big fan of your channel, and the content. One minor observation; the Junkers 88 cockpit picture @2:25 is accompanied with the "Stuka" name, which was not associated with this particular aircraft (that was associated with the Junkers 87 dive bomber). Kind regards.

    Great video Tim as always. I have a Laco Speyer and they are great watches. They also, as you alluded to, sell cheaper versions which still have most of the key attributes of the genre. Also they are lovely people to deal with. Still a family business I believe. Totally recommend Laco. One other thing is that the lume is normally brilliant. On a separate note: what do you think of the risk of radium on the original antique models?

    • @CasebackWatches
      @CasebackWatches  5 років тому +3

      The risk is there for watchmakers, who actually work with the hands. Speyer is a perfect thing. Very puristic but everything is in place.

    Hi Tim, at 2:29 you are referencing a Ju88 as Stuka. Stukas were Ju87 which were single engine dive bombers. Ju88 was a medium twin engine bomber. The cockpit picture is from the Ju88. So just get rid of the “Stuka“ reference. Thx.

    The Laco Original series can’t be beat for the most historically accurate B-Uhren, aesthetically speaking. I bought myself a Dortmund a month ago. I plan to get the Westerland as well, and maybe both in bronze also. The Bremerhaven is also very nice. All three models are Handaufzug/hand winding.
    Yes, I’m a big Laco fan. ;)
    Edit: There’s a really great book on these watches by Konrad Knirim - Militäruhren: Die Uhren der deutschen Streitkräfte 1870 bis 1990. I’m unsure if there’s an English edition but as I can read a fair bit of German this edition is fine for me. I’ll try to find one and post the title here if there is.
    Edit:
    There is.
    Konrad Knirim - German Military Timepieces 150 Years Watches and Clocks of German Forces (Volume 1)
    ISBN 3-89355-232-4

    You are a funny dude... endeed Laco is the brand for me that is why I own a Friedrichshafen type B, because of the detailed way in which, during that time, the war was run... I think it's a German thing to be so exact...as you beautifully said it to deliver D and D at the right time, very funny :-)))), but true.

    I have theory about B dial that minutes on outside were there because minutes and seconds are the same makings... And seconds were super important for precise bombing. This watches were all about precision of seconds so that could be that (also i love how sec hand on bouth Aand B Dial sec hand reaches all the way over the marker so you cant miss read the sec, sutch a good design).
    Inner circle in 24 h in stead of 12 markings could be explained by the fact that bombings were at night and to have faster and more precise infos they communicated them like that. Also you need moment to translate 9h to 21h but you know by hart 0 to 12 reading so there could be something about fast comunication. Anyhow I hope someone could facts to this

    Excuse me Tim. So you can actually break the watch if you pull the crown to position one (date setting) and turn it around midnight and break the movement. No?

    • @CasebackWatches
      @CasebackWatches  5 років тому +3

      I didn't try it. But would be insane, or what do you think? My guess is that there is no date unit you could damage with that kind of action.

    • @thawasly
      @thawasly 5 років тому +3

      Caseback Watches I think it depends on how the movement is modified inside. If you feel clicks as you turn the crown in the first position then it might cause some damage.

    Hello everybody,
    Thanks for the review.
    So it has a ghost date function? At this price point?
    Do all the no-date Type B models from Laco have ghost date function?
    It may not be important for many people. But a ghost date function for me it is like a watch not having a dedicated movement for its model, and a way of saving money for the manufacturer.
    Would this affect the movement if we set the time between 9pm and 3am?
    I am considering getting one, that's why I am asking too.

    I think the bronze case of the Laco goes great with the pre-aged lume color and has the advantage of not being dinged-up like the Erbstück case. To my knowledge, "Anforderz." means "Anforderzeichen", not "Anforderungszahl". The ETA Elaboré movements Laco uses are a bit basic and not to chronometer specs. Some components differ from chronometre, and the movement is regulated to 2 positions instead of 5. There are 2824 no-dates without the date position which is a nice touch, unfortunately not used by Laco.
    By the way, isn't there a youth hostel on the site of the former Hamburg naval observatory?

    What is the reason to wear and glorify a watch that was pate of the SS uniform? It would be like wearing a shirt or boots that are an exact replica of a Nazi soldier's uniform every day! The story should not be forgotten but this seems a bit exaggerated. There are many other watches to be appreciated!
