Vargas to me is a pocket fighter. He'll get in a rythym of sorts where he's hitting on all cylinders. Head movement's there, combinations, sharp counter punching. I"ve always appreciated his style and felt that rythmic fighters are truly an anomoly.
Yup that's why he looks weird an uncomfortable when he tried brawling with oscar , Although fighting in rhythm with oscar with vargas speed also wouldn't cut it for him.
mep41376 yah. Crisp loose punch. Also caught Vargas coming in therefore double the power. Doesn't take much sometimes. Yet Vargas has been battered therefore I agree. Manny knew it could be devastating.
Vargas was a good tough fighter, very strong and a huge heart, but I dont buy into the notion.that he could have been one of the "greats". excellent warrior though and didnt duck no one
Dude was gonna be a great trust me, Trinidad ruined his career he had stuffed wraps and he hit Vargas with a bunch of low blows, apparently Fernando was pissing blood after the fight.
I disagree Vargas was highly skilled. Elite boxing skills. The problem was Vargas was TOO MEXICAN when he didn’t have to be. Also he didn’t have good management to guide his career properly. He has no business at 22 fighting tito.
As Emanuel Steward was saying he should of went for it after he knocked him down. He just laid back and let Vargas come to him instead of pressing the advantage.
@@brianticas7671 I mean, he was coming off the Trinidad fight just a few months prior. I wouldn’t say Vargas was “exposed” or anything, but the book was sort of out on how vulnerable he was to quick counters, particuarly short left hooks inside.

I truly believe had he took the whole year off (he was barely 23 years old after the Trinidad fight) his career would've had a much better trajectory. Came back too soon instead of allowing his body & mind to heal. Same thing with the beating Ryan Garcia dished out on Devin Haney. Looks like Haney is taking the rest of the year off as he should if he hopes of rebounding because that was a beating but no doubt the beating Trinidad gave Vargas was much worse than Garcia gave to Haney. Just using both fights as a comparison. Fernando Vargas aside from his boxing skills was always balls to the wall. Gave some Hall of Famers arguably their toughest fights and wasn't afraid to go out on his shield. A true fighter in every sense of the word.
A wilfredo Rivera with 5 puerto rico amateur nacional champion in different weight classes and he didnt jump on Fernando Vargas right away it makes you think

You always hear commentator’s mention "was he rushed along too fast" but the fact of the matter is his window for making money for his retirement was shorter than other prospects. His management team and promoter were aware of this and if they were all going to get a return on their investment, including Vargas himself, they had to move things along quickly. If they didn’t the money fights with Quarte, Trinidad, De La Hoya, Mosley, etc. would’ve never happened. Vargas had already accumulated a substantial amount of brain damage when he turned pro. He was sparring in the gym constantly all his life and he was always fighting on the streets. It was a well known gym legend that if you hit Vargas on the button it was the snooze button. And it’s not one of those skills you can work on to improve. If you got the chin of a toddler at 20 years old and you’re a professional fighter you’re going to have the chin of a drunk toddler at 24. Every time his brain was moving around in his skull after a punch landed it got a little bit worse. And you could tell how frustrating it was for him because it was his brain not processing things while his heart was. To be honest, I give him credit for fighting the competition that he did after the Trinidad fight. I’m going to bed that inspiring leading up to this fight he was constantly going down on his ass. Balls of steel though. On a sidenote, lol, his loose neck was part of his appeal. He was always on Queer Street, never face down like Pacquiao was vs Marquez, anything could happen in one of his fights no matter how further feather fisted the opponent was.

Forbid if Vargas had lost this fight, his career would be possibly in tatters. Steward's quote summed that up adeptly.

Vargas was clearly shaken it was not a flash ko. Rivera wasted that opportunity.
As Emanuel Steward was saying he should of went for it after he knocked him down. He just laid back and let Vargas come to him instead of pressing the advantage.
Absolutely. The killer instinct never kicked in.
