  • This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences.
Which teacher would you rather have: a lecturer who doesn't take any questions, or a tutor who works with you 1-on-1? Everyone prefers the tutor, but the millions of online learners around the world are stuck with the lecturer. After all, if you want to teach a million students at once, it's a lot easier to make a one-size-fits-all video than it is to design a personalized experience that's tailored to each student. Wissner-Gross is changing all that. After reviewing state-of-the-art scalable learning, he shows how a single tutor can give personalized instruction to a billion students at once.
A Hertz Fellow, Dr. Zachary Wissner-Gross is the cofounder and CEO of School Yourself, a startup company pioneering the development of scalable personalized learning.

This video made me feel better about getting extra tutoring. There are several different aspects that I have issues with. It's either the material or how the instructor is presenting the information that causes me to lose focus, misinterpret information, or even become extremely confused. I actually learn faster and more efficiently by simply attending tutor and review sessions ohtside of lectures.

This is the best platform I've come across for learning maths online, second would be Khan Academy. These lessons are fantastic and my sons (ages 15 and 10) are using it.
I've considered going to uni to further my studies but I learn out of curiosity, not for a paper.
I'm already working in tech as a dev and have never attended uni. Times have changed.
I'm sure you're already planning on putting up other subjects, when you do I'm sure this will be the goto for students everywhere, may even force universities to finally bring their prices down!

ironic that this information was delivered via lecture.

Less ironic when you consider that he's presenting an idea rather than teaching a lesson, but yeah. =)

0:29 I think he kind of pointed out the irony of the situation at the beggining of the talk

Strictly speaking, the example at 7:40 is inaccurate; polygons cannot have convex sides. Thus the "wrong" answer of the two in the bottom corners (left and right), is actually correct.

This would help a lot of folks, but also put a lot of teachers and tutors out of work.

What a brilliant concept. Fantastic progress you are making.!
I have been thinking about making interactive online lessons but I have no idea how to create one.
Is there any software I could use to make my own online lessons? I am a Chemistry teacher.

This isn't really that relevant but why do I always get the feeling everyone in the crowd is angry during every Tedx video?

A novel idea but not that realistic for most teachers because it involves behavior change. It might work in a controlled environment. I think we need more people who are willing to teach in a two way conversation using the best technology has to offer. Just my opinion..
