100% this! I threw 2 dc50's away last month, both needing a pcb and brushroll motor and refurbs. It's sad that it's not even that it's difficult to do, their no worse than equivalent aged dysons, it's the cost of parts. If you did it to keep you'd make the numbers work but I don't see a 50 as an upgrade to a 14 tbh
Thank you very much for this excellent video. I had replaced the filters with new items and inspected all of the hoses for blockages, but hadn’t cleaned the head in the detail you described. Having done this it is like a different machine.
Thanks for the video. I was running into lose of suction and couldn't figure it out when I disassembled the majority of the vacuum. The tip that really helped me was taking the filter out and turning it inside out. At a glace, I always thought it looked fine. After turning it inside out I could tell how clogged up it was. After cleaning off the filter it runs like new.
So much for your video. I really appreciated it. Now I fix something on my own instead of taking it to my son Scott. He'll appreciate that. Again, thank you so very much for your video.
Thank you so so much. I was just about to scrap my new looking dyson until I saw this. I only got to 5.19 where you did the filter and that fixed it. Thank you
Yet another delightful video. Is there anything you can't do? So, people don't want to buy bags, and they certainly don't want to or don't maintain a bagless cleaner, so ...sadly friends sent three Dysons to a landfill when they died and someone like you could have fixed them and found them new homes. Those friends have a Shark now and love it. I still miss my old DC07 crappy filth bugger though it was ...my Miele, perfection as it is, is So Heavy. The Dyson felt light and agile. And creaky... hahaha.
Watched with trpidation to see if you remembered the seal... You did!! Gonna see if I can fix the dyson now... It nearly got thrown down the stairs today, but Mrs held back as I was on an working from home meeting.
Thanks for your great video's, vacuum cleaner maintenance gold dust! and if the next James Bond or Mission Impossible film has vacuum cleaner theme, Id hope that you get the starring role.
Washing them never hurts, if you pop the fabric sock off they go in the washing machine a treat and come out just damp. But if you keep it vacuumed, you don't need to wash it as much! I vac my v11 filter off regularly as it takes an age to dry as I daredn't stick it in the machine incase it smashes into a million pieces lol
Another excellent movie - thanks! Would it be a safe bet to say this owner has NOT been removing and rinsing the filter according to the intervals suggested so clearly in the owners manual ?? Why are folk so happy to pay top money for Dyson products and then totally ignore them till they pack up ???
Diesoon (Dyson) are fine but still need regular maintenance just like many other machines, I reckon advertising gives false impressions lol good video Sam 👍
Still seem to be having an issue with ours. There's suction from the top of the ball when the dustbin is removed but as soon as that is re-attached there's no suction from the roller head or the hose. There's also a really harsh hissing sound as if something is blocking the airway but we've completely dismantled it and cleaned the filters and even after removing a full heads worth of hair there's still nothing. My suggestion to mum was to just chuck it out but perhaps you've got a better suggestion 😅
It's still clogged somewhere, that harsh hissing sound is the blockage relief valve opening. Made 100% sure the air ducts in the chassis are free and unclogged? The entrance to the cyclone where rhe dirt enters? It's tiny and easily clogged. Every air path route through the chassis, hose, wand and cyclone needs to be checked. Doesn't take much to clog them up, a small twig then some use will back everything up and do it
@@beko1987 finally managed to find the blockage. Sadly the offending material has caused a tear in one of the tubes so that'll probably have to be replaced. 😓
Brilliant as always. We all know Dyson's Never Loose Suction LMFAO. Your face cleaning that little Sock Filter is priceless !!! Lol. How do you clean a Dyson ?? Use a SEBO of course . Just had one of these out of a skip near me. Sole plate clip missing (£3.49)pair. Sole plate held on with Duct Tape lol. Active height adjust not working !! That's odd !!! Lol. Small Flexi pipe blocked . Cleared that, now runs like a champ. Well, a Dyson champ, that is lol. Thanks for the vids. You take care mate. 😀👍
I agree with the "Stupid Design" statement on the vacuum head. How could Mr. Dyson mess up such a simple part? I spent a good 20 minutes trying to clean those narrow areas and was wondering why they made such a bad design than you can't pry it open for easy cleaning.
@@beko1987 By any chance, do you know what is the proper voltage across the switch that controls the brush? I've rebuilt my switch assembly twice, the first time because a spring got bent out of shape (last year), and the second time (just today) because I couldn't get the brush to turn on. I was surprised to find that the voltage across the two sides of the switch was only 30 V, not 120 V. I replaced both switches, but the problem is not solved. I didn't see any obstructions in my brush head. If the 30 V reading is correct, I guess I have to replace the brush head?
So I followed along with your video and was able to remove a ton of dust. I actually replaced our filters as well since they hadn't been replaced or cleaned for years (yes, years...). However we still have little suction and when we use it on non carpeted areas it just spits out what it sucked up. Any other recos where a clog may be hiding?
Is there a physical blockage anywhere else? Take the cyclone off and turn it on. Put the cyclone back on whilst it's running. Change of motor tone? Pop the filter side of the balls off, then recline and stand it up whilst looking at the changeover valve hose. Does it flip up and down as it should? Have you had the brushroll off and taken the base plate off and checked for clogs?
@@beko1987 yup, done all of this! Not sure where the issue could be. I've literally disassembled the vacuum like 3 times and still can't get the suction to improve. I'll check the changeover valve now and see if that resolves it! Thanks for the recos, I'll keep at it and see if we can get it up and running again!
Are the little hoses blocked up? If they don't go in the right place they'll jam it all up. If you take both ball shells off (might need a screwdriver for the non filter side) you'll be able to see what it's doing. A squirt of wd or similar at the pivoting parts wouldn't hurt either, just not too much.
I had simillar issues on my Dc40,The bellows in the self adjusting head were full of fluff,I think that could have been solved if they had a telescope like plastic inner wall that retracts/falls based on the bellow,so the bellow is like a spring.I also found the Changeover seal was missing on mine so superglued a dc04 skeleton to bin seal on it and boy,it glued itself to the floor
Those sodding heads always fill themselves with fluff! Im always cleaning them out when I get them in. It ruined my first dc40 experience tbh as I used it for a while and thought it was a bit crap, was only when I was refurbishing it for sale I found the gummed up head, but by the time I'd cleaned it all out it was spotless and I didn't want to use it!
Great video thanks. If you don't resell these what do you recommend in the Dyson range as an upright cleaner, may be a dc25? Or not a Dyson at all? Cheers
All vacuums lose suction over time due to filters becoming dirty/ bags and bins getting full or a hose clog. It’s impossible to design a vacuum that never loses suction.
I hate the dc50! I'd prefer a 24 and that's saying something as I'm not a huge fan of that, although thr 24's issue is dyson using cheap shit brushroll motors which are all coming to the end of their specified life. The dc50 doesn't have that excuse, it's just a pile of crap! The 1st gen brushroll that sheds it's carbon brushes for fun, flimsy awful wand design, terrible carriage assembly... I reckon dyson used the dc50 in their comparisons on the v10/11 (performs better than a full size vac) as it all makes sense when you compare it like that! Dc75, less so!
I belive (Dont quote me) that dyson improved the brushroll on the small ball so its a little but less disintergraty I think they last a bit longer but I dont know. Also my dc25 doesnt leak dust but thats probably because I wipe the seal after every use.
Welcome to the Dyson paradox... A damp cloth and a poky thing will clear it and clean it well enough, the pre motor filter goes through the washing machine nicely, new post motor filters are very cheap.
If you mean how to use the wand, flip the top red cover up and pull on the pipe at the back! The hose then comes off the wand for hose use, then slide it all back in to go back to floor cleaning.
@@beko1987 Thanks for that, i didnt know that either, i bought it second hand so there's no manuel. but I still dont know how to detach the handle so i can vacuum the floor. that was so kind of you reply.

Take the filter cover ball side off and look as you recline the machine, you'll soon know. The little hose could be torn too
The only country I know that still bicycles repair shops is Mexico. Now I know what country has vacuum repair shops. It amazes me. really who does that? If regular maintenance doesn't work, get a new one
You can wash the cyclone out, but you've got to strip it down and wash the parts, dry the parts and reassemble. Otherwise the thick layer of dust will turn to mud and be worse than when you started! Good luck!
Thank you!!!! I had a clog at the head of the brush and now it’s working better than ever!
