@@kn4140Perhaps I can help answer you as Im from HK. Do all HKers know English? Not at all. People over 50 years old usually do not speak English . Many of them know only very basic English words or expressions like “toilets”, “thank you very much”, and “see you!” That being said, according to my personal observation, around 75% of the HK population can at least have a very basic conversation in English. One thing that you may find convenient is that over 90% of the signposts and public instructions in HK are written in both Chinese and English. Therefore, if you only know English, you can definitely survive. In fact, many Western expats here speak only in English, though they may have already been living here for over a decade, and they are living very well. The next question is perhaps partly answered above. Do you need to know Cantonese? Basically no. You can work for a Japanese company or Western firm here and therefore Cantonese may not be required. You can also live with the Japanese community in HK so you can still know some friends without knowing the local language. However, if you don’t know Cantonese, though you won’t be discriminated against since HKers are oddly obsesses with Japanese and Japanese culture, you can hardly be a part of this place as you will understand nothing about the culture and deeper face of this city.
