  • Maynard James Keenan (born James Herbert Keenan; April 17, 1964) is an American singer, songwriter, musician, record producer, actor, and winemaker. He is best known as the singer and primary lyricist of the rock bands Tool, A Perfect Circle, and Puscifer.
Originally from Ohio, Keenan spent his high school and college years in Michigan. He joined the U.S. Army after graduating from high school. After leaving the Army, he attended the Kendall College of Art and Design in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He relocated to Los Angeles in 1988 to pursue a career in interior design and set construction, and formed Tool with Adam Jones shortly thereafter.
In addition to his music career, Keenan owns Merkin Vineyards and Caduceus Cellars in Arizona, where he resides. Since rising to fame, he has been noted as a recluse, although he does emerge to support charitable causes and for the occasional interview. He has also ventured into acting.

Maynard dosent just let anyone interview him, I love that he respects Beato and let him into his world for us to hear. 2 legends conversing, I love it!

    What a great interview

Could not think of a better suited person to get Maynard to relax and open up about his artistic life. Way to go Rick!

Rick is a different interviewer than what artists have to put up with. Rick is not a journalist who has to do an interview with an artist he doesn’t like, or one that is full of himself, is provoking artists to get quotes to sell magazines or intentionally misquotes trying to cause a shitstorm for publicity.

More in-depth Maynard interview than any I've found. Very cool, relaxed authentic conversation. It's like hanging with music nerds for an hour. Loved it.

As a Arizonan born and raised. Everyone loves him, from what I've heard from multiple people who have met him, he's also a super down to earth, great to fans at all times and a real renaissance man.

This was, hands down, the best Maynard interview ever. Perfectly choreographed by Rick. And we all know he’s not an easy interview and doesn’t suffer fools. Loved it.

Maynards song writing ability is incredible

  • R.W. Bottorff

I love that they actually talk pretty in depth. I don't believe I've ever heard Maynard open up in such a good mood, so relaxed and articulate as this. Great video!

Bravo Rick. As much as I love MJK's interviews where he trolls the interviewer for 5-10 minutes, this was awesome. I'm not sure you can find anything out there where Maynard goes deeper into his process, thinking, and even feelings, than you accomplished here.

I've been a massive Tool, A Perfect Circle and Puscifer for as long as I can remember, and I can honestly say this is the single best interview of Maynard James Keenan ever recorded.

One of the best musicians alive. So many epic creations.

Rick has made his bones in music and those he interviews get that. He asks questions that a musician would ask and then subtly mixes in a few questions that a friend would ask...it's just brilliant. Best interview of MJK I've ever seen...

This is the absolute best interview that I've ever seen of MJK!!! He is very particular with his interviews and what info he shares. He must had mad respect for Rick Beato. Thank you to both of you for doing this!!!

Please Rick, interview Danny Carey too! Just how can he think of so unique rhythms?

  • Thomas Fucik

I can only imagine all the questions you'd like to have asked as a fan of MJK Rick, but you as a professional and cool interviewer had the discipline to keep it as you did. Thank you for all you do for music appreciation.

I like the way he watches his vocal health and makes sure he's 100 percent.

Thank you, Rick. It is really rare, if ever achieved by an interviewer, to get onto a level with Maynard. There was almost no rejecting, ridiculing, burying in sarcarm or whatsoever by him. Instead, this became an intimate and genuine interview. That's an achievement I am really grateful for.

  • Logan Irvine

I really love the fact that no matter who Rick talks to...Frampton, PRS, Sting, or now, Maynard...every episode starts as an interview, and ends as a conversation between friends/musicians. Rick is so damn versatile, its fantastic.
