"Clobbering anyone who looks at me funny" I'd like to point out a thing that makes Yakuza stand out compared to most sandbox titles: Kiryu, Majima or any other protagonist NEVER initiate combat, never directly attack people, they defend themselves. Part of it is due to the series creator's personal stance on not liking the idea that violence is fun, and part of it is a brilliant choice that prevents discrepancies between the narrative and gameplay. Whereas, say, games like Just Cause allow you to quite literally murder anyone in cold blood and destroy anything in your path, while still telling the player that Rico is the good guy, in Yakuza you never do something Kiryu wouldn't do. That way, there is no discrepancy between the characterization of "Storyline Kiryu" as a good-hearted, rugged but still kind person and "Gameplay Kiryu"
That's not true. Right in the prologue he already starts fights, not to mention the whole rest of the game. In the intro cinematic he runs into (literally) a random guy knocking him down for no reason. Then a few minutes later Kiryu meets two drunks who aren't even remotely trying to start a fight with him and barely even look at him, Nishiki says "let's go around them" and Kiryu says "no let's beat them up". And he does! And so on for the rest of the game.
@@donotevenbegintocare How was a Dude that carried debt and was instructed to Kiryu to deal with somehow ended up completely random person? If it was random person, then the whole empty lot story would make no sense, since Dojima clan would have no idea that Kiryu was beating the guy in that lot, which then wouldn't lead to framing him.
Yakuza to me is a good deal and I would be happy with it and I hope that I can help me out the way more like this is going on and I hope you have some good news for me since I am a little bit shy and the world of love is so good that you have to go to school and have to check the rules and the world çüñţ and the other thing you have some friends and family members are going through is the best fruit you have ever had and that's what Yakuza is to me
I started to love this game almost immediately, but the moment where this game fully and truly hooked me was the cutscene with Kiryu and Nishikiyama after the fight in the sewers. Nishikiyama takes a gun out wanting to mercy kill Kiryu and seeing the distraught and pain in his face, his voice straining as he struggles to pull the trigger. One of my favorite scenes in all of gaming.
That scene is what made me fall in love with Yakuza, it's so wonderfully emotional it feels real, my heart broke after chapter 6, and continued to break as I played.
@@ayeshachorley5689 I was fond of Nishiki since he was first introduced, but I knew I loved him when that scene played, I would protect him with my life, I love Nishiki so much ;(((
That scene and others really empower the events of kiwami in my opinion. I'm not through the game yet (I think I'm at chapter 5), but having more context for kiryu and nishikiyama's relationship made the early events of kiwami give me far more complex emotions and questions than if I had played kiwami first. Really shows that zero isn't just a great standalone title, it's a fantastic prequel as well.

One of the coolest things you'll find in later games is that the area Kiryu explores in his part of the game is a staple of the entire series. That district is generally the same in every Yakuza iteration, just with differences here and there as the games go on. While this might SOUND boring or repetitive on paper, the opposite is true. Since there are so many things to do in the games, you never feel bored and, due to the small area you go back to on every adventure, you see it grow and change. D'jango Markov Yakuza you play AS kiryu tho. He wouldn’t attack anyone at random. So it’s a narrative limitation. You care about kiryu because he interacts with the world consistently. GTA and Red Dead try to do the same thing. But they fail, because of player agency. GTA 3 has that on lock, but the increasing narrative elements and restrictive nature clash.
Hard to say. I agree that the story is better told in Jugement, but I think the story (i.e. the actual details of the plot) felt really typical. Judgement never surprised me with a ridiculous twist, and I think that comes down to the type of film they were taking their cues from. Japanese Yakuza movies are operatic madness in a cool jacket, and we don't make stuff quite like that in the West. Detective procedurals are a dime a dozen where ever you go and the tropes are pretty consistent across them, but video games have an easier time looking like Law & Order then they do looking like an 80s grindhouse movie.
@@matsurivirus1814 All first party games come to gamepass. If Microsoft bought sega and incorporated them into xbox game studios all their games would come to game pass
Yakuza 0 is better than any GTA. Everything from the story, combat, side missions, cutscenes... it's just on another level entirely. I say this as someone who grew up on GTA games, but yeah... the only thing GTA does better is probably the scale. I think it's great in terms of offering massive open worlds, with all kinds of vehicles, radio DJs, etc. But Yakuza 0 is better in everything else.
They aren't really comparable, honestly. GTA's open world was designed to fuck around in and emergent storytelling, and the story itself is an afterthought. Yakuza's world, on the other hand, was designed as a method of delivering stories. Hell if Yakuza 0 doesn't blow GTA V out of the water for my tastes though
I feel like comparing them in the first place is not great Yakuza is a game that feels like an RPG with a crime drama for a story whereas GTA is the Sandbox experience where you can fuck around and live out your power fantasy. Even most of their stories are about rising to the top of the ladder and bathing yourself in power
I hope you do more Yakuza games in the future, now that you've got a taste for the story it just keeps getting better and better, I'm so invested in the world of Kiryu Kazama and the rest of the gang!
As someone who was also a pretty late bloomer to the Yakuza series (played Kiwami in early 2018) I'm really glad you liked this one, Jirard. It's easily become one of my favorite franchises of all time, and even the crazy spin-off Dead Souls managed to do some pretty awesome things. Glad you got around to this one, but now I'd say give yourself a break with something smaller. You've more than earned it.
Thank you for this video, many of these popular UA-cam Gamers have tremendous influence on the games people play. I would have never touched, looked at, or considered playing Yakuza 0. I then watched Angry Joes review, Ive been increasingly critical of Joe in recent years, but he sold me on trying this game. I played it and hated it after Chapter 2 and deleted it. A few months later the gaming Gods touched me and I gave it another try. By the end of the game I was amazed at the greatness of this game. When those end credits hit with that great song, I stood up and actually applauded this game. I have since played Kiwami 1, Kiwami 2, Yakuza 3, recently beat Yakuza 4, and Yakuza 6 and waiting on the remaster Yakuza 5 in February. I never would have played this great franchise if not fro Angry Joe. People will see your video and will try and enjoy this great franchise, you really do provide a service. I wish more UA-cam Influencers spent more time promoting great games rather then endless content on Fallout 76, Anthem, and EA.

I jumped into the series earlier this year through this very game, and its become one of my favorite franchises in gaming. I'd recommend going further in your off time (at least up to the masterpiece of Yakuza 5), but I get that it won't be easy given your job. It's worth it though. And the way you structured your review is utterly perfect. It's one of my favorite Completionist episodes.

Yakuza 0 is nowhere near bigger than GTA V and it doesn't look anywhere near as good except the cutscenes but still it's a much better game. I just fell in love with the Yakuza series around 3 months ago. So far I have beaten Yakuza 0, Kiwami 1 and 2, and Yakuza 6. I'm playing Yakuza like a dragon now and I'm up to chapter 10. I I'm on chapter 7 of Judgment. Of all these shakuza titles Yakuza 0 is by far the best. It has one of the best stories of any video game I've ever played in my life and I've been a gamer for 36 years ever since I was 8 years old.

I am absolutely astatic that you got to play one of my most favorite games of that year! Zero was also my entry point into the series and I’ve been hooked ever since. Yakuza is the gift that keeps on giving. Thanks for completing it!
Yes! Persona 5 is gonna be the easiest one to get in to on PS3/PS4 (even at around 80-100 hours in just a first run through of the game with all the grinding of gear and Personas), as you need both a PS2 and VitaTV/PSTV to truely experience the 4 previous games in completion. You'll need the following (in story order); VitaTV/PSTV to play the PSP version of Persona 1 in total with the better translation and additional quest (PS1 version cut out the Snow Queen quest). PS2 to play both halves of the Persona 2 story (only the first half got released on PSP in English, though if you're willing to install CFW to run homebrew on your Vita, there is a fan-translation of the second half of P2's story from the Japanese PSP release in development). PS2 to play Persona 3: FES & VitaTV/PSTV to play Persona 3: Portable, both of which add their own extra content (extra ending and playtime on FES, expanded story and option of a female character on Portable). VitaTV/PSTV to play the enhancements of Persona 4: Golden compared to the PS2 version of Persona 4.
@some random guy/videos problem with using a PS3 for playing PS2 games is you can run into emulation issues on the later Phats, on the Slims & Super-Slims especially, as the PS2 hardware in the PS3 is slowly removed and replaced with software emulation (Launch PS3 being both a PS2 & PS3 in one was a factor to the high cost back in the day due to having the CPU & GPU of the PS2 as part of the circuitry of the Launch PS3). And yeah, I listed the games and systems in order of hardware needed to play the full stories in order from the first game, and the best way to experience the full story of each game. One could just use the VitaTV/PSTV (same device, just Japan Vs. English naming, only difference in-use is the O/X flip outside of games) for playing Persona 1, 2 & 3 if you don't mind missing on the second half of 2's story or missing on the extension of story 3 got in FES on PS2 compared to what Portable had on PSP. I will stand by saying Persona 4 is better with Golden on Vita, particularly with the Aeon Social Link and ability to check online what other players did on a day-to-day basis to help decide what you do in terms of grinding reps and stuff.
whenever you talk about the completionist legacy show, im always sad i wont ever see it(im from middle Europe, not really an option to fly to USA), it seems like something i would really enjoy...still happy you do staff like that along with the channel

Yakuza is never boring story wise at least
D'jango Markov Yakuza you play AS kiryu tho. He wouldn’t attack anyone at random. So it’s a narrative limitation. You care about kiryu because he interacts with the world consistently. GTA and Red Dead try to do the same thing. But they fail, because of player agency. GTA 3 has that on lock, but the increasing narrative elements and restrictive nature clash.
*Completionist makes a Yakuza video*
*Me:* "Nani?!"
Having just recently beat yakuza 0 it makes me enjoy all the flourishes of this video that much more
Judgement would really knock your boots off if you enjoyed the story telling of Yakuza 0
Judgement was boring to me
Hard to say.
There's so much yakuza shit. I really hope microsoft really buys sega so they can put all that shit on gamepass lol
@@djangomarkov7948 ...What?
@@matsurivirus1814 All first party games come to gamepass. If Microsoft bought sega and incorporated them into xbox game studios all their games would come to game pass
Yakuza 0 is better than any GTA. Everything from the story, combat, side missions, cutscenes... it's just on another level entirely.
I say this as someone who grew up on GTA games, but yeah... the only thing GTA does better is probably the scale. I think it's great in terms of offering massive open worlds, with all kinds of vehicles, radio DJs, etc. But Yakuza 0 is better in everything else.
@A A. Yep. That's definitely true. The world is very alive
I feel like comparing them in the first place is not great
Yakuza is a game that feels like an RPG with a crime drama for a story whereas GTA is the Sandbox experience where you can fuck around and live out your power fantasy. Even most of their stories are about rising to the top of the ladder and bathing yourself in power
Idk GTA San Andreas is really good
The whole world laughs at you. No one agrees with you. Yakuza is trash compared to GTA.
He did it. The madman HE DID IT!!!!
Can’t wait to see the next 7 videos in this Yakuza playlist you’re working on.
I'm so happy... It only took 2 years 😂
Mad congrats to the guy who's been asking all this time
I hope you do more Yakuza games in the future, now that you've got a taste for the story it just keeps getting better and better, I'm so invested in the world of Kiryu Kazama and the rest of the gang!
You ready for Yakuza 7?
Holy shit this is amazing!!! Thank you Jirard! Or rather "Jirard Khalil - Head of The Completionist Family"
The Dragonrider of Completion
A UA-cam clan subsidiary
@@GRNexusTeam Haha! Just amazing
Khalil Jirard. Patriarch of the Completionist Clan, a subsidiary of the NormalBoots Family
Patriarch Completionist.
I'm legit shocked.... I feel like an era has come to an end.
This platinum made me learn and even enjoy Mahjong.
Anyone cries at the ending scenes?
You think that's bad. Wait till you finish the Majima Saga in Yakuza Kiwami 2
munem939 I also finished that. **sop
Yup. Both of em.
Yo.
*KIRYU-CHAN~* ♥️
God, when that music box started playing, I blubbered like a baby
The Pocket Cars mini game, hours went into it, and I'm satisfied.
The madman did it! Welcome to the Yakuza club, my friend, it only gets more insane from here.
As in "battling a room full of grown men in diapers" insane.
Knocking not one but two tigers out bare handed insane
A Ex-Yakuza living out his Dragon Quest fantasy insane.
Ex-Yakuza fighting a chimp-driven Excavator insane.
I wish more UA-cam Influencers spent more time promoting great games rather then endless content on Fallout 76, Anthem, and EA.
it was about time this series got love. back in 2011 we were begging and signing petitions for it to get localized
Everyone remember to watch Max0r’s Yakuza 0 video. It’s a national treasure.
Genuinely one of the worst videos I've ever watched, couldn't stomach more than 5 minutes😭😭
You have no idea how happy I am that you got into this game, Completionist or not.
It's one of my favorite Completionist episodes.
images.app.goo.gl/F6dPVXexbDbaeRqw9
I gotta complete this game sometime
Update: I ended up getting the platinum at the end of January and I love the game to death but the some of the trophies are annoying. Overall a great experience

I just like it how Jirard missed 3 buttons in a row. That's a mark he really laughed his ass off to that karaoke video and lost focus, like I did
Bought this game because of this video and I loved being a pimp in Club Sunshine taking other clubs best girls.
Currently beating it on Legendary and already bought the next 2 ready to play.
"JiRaRd WhEnS YaKuZa 1-6" cant wait for the comments to become this from now on
He needs to do Judgement too
I'd be fine if he just did Judgement and Fist of the North Star since those are different enough from the main formula.
Tiger Festivals Nooot really hahha. The gameplay loop is still almost the same. Hence why fans demanded a change, and Yakuza 7 has an all new RPG battle system.
Stef Kak a lot of fans are actually super pissed about the change, considering Yakuza is the only 3D beat em up with a half decent budget. I’m going to wait until I can actually read the menus (as you do in turn based games) to cast final judgment though.
@@StefKa02 Well the core loop is the same but the themes and characters are more different than the main series.
Yakuza deserves so much more love, it is just SO good, thank you for showing some love!
Soooooo... When's persona 5?
Also digging the suit man it looks good on you
He mentioned in a stream he plans to have the episode for P5 out by the time Royal comes West (so about March-ish)
to hold it off, he could do P3 FES and P4 Golden in lead up to 5
Don't give me hope man
At this point I feel like he's going to do Persona 5 Royal
@@davidf2676 it's a re release of persona 5 with way more content and a new party member
Such a good game series. I been going through all the games and went through Judgment and then 0-5. On 6 right now and then will do Like a Dragon and Lost Judgment later this year
Did you do ishin?
Thank you so much Jirard more people need to know about this amazing franchise and with all the ps4 remakes coming out it's great to jump into the world of Yakuza
I believe it or some it is now coming to Xbox so hopefully those who have that console pick it up. Haven't checked how well the PC releases have been doing. Hopefully good
@@VanTesla In terms of the PC ports, only three have been released: Yakuza 0, Yakuza Kiwami and Kiwami 2 (the kiwami games are remakes of the first game and its sequel).
💯
We need a Nintendo Switch port yakuza on the go💪💪💪
This video oozes the same spectacular vibe Yakuza 0 does from start to finish. I am beyond impressed and happy to see Jirard conquer this incredible mountain of a game. Well done.
I've been waiting for this series to be covered since the Completionist started.
I didn't even know Yakuza existed until my friend showed me a week ago and the entire series is amazing.
"I Fought Some Drunks, Ate Some Ramen, And Before I Knew It I Was Playing A Rhythm Game."
Sounds like there was something special in the ramen! 🤔
the more people who know about this amazing game the better. thanks for shouting it out youtuber guy.
you need to play judgement. it has a stunning storyline
Hahahahaah the editing here is 🔝 kudos on your job and videos man
7:46 Best boi in the entire franchise.
i'm so glad you liked it! thanks for completing this one!
Yakuza Mahjong completion points gon be the death of me
Yakuza has become one of my favorite game series of all time after starting from 0 this year and I seriously can't wait for the remasters and play all the main games with spin-offs in time.
This is probably my first The Completionist video I watched so I wasn't part of the meme of Yakuza 0 sadly...
But I think I've discovered something amazing...
I'll keep watching the older videos!
Completed this myself the other day and I've never had to learn so many different board games and gambling games to complete a game.
XD
It's awesome you finally got around too this! It's amazing seeing just how much content there truely is in this game! It's insane!
Seeing this video pop up in my notifications made jump out of my chair! Yakuza is finally getting the attention it deserves.
I've had a really rough week. This video put a smile on my face.
Thank you.
My first yakuza game I played 😁 now I’m a fan of this series, love this series more than sonic now
I couldn't get into video games recently like I used to when I was younger but Yakuza 0 really keeps me playing for hours and hours and I am still going. This game is really something else
24:48 "I did it, snitches!"
That got me thinking of Old Man Snitches from way back in the day. Who else misses that?
Never clicked a Completionist video so fast
This is what I missed in GTA 5 Single player. GTA San Andreas also has a lot of thing to do outside of mission. Yakuza series, enchance it even more.
I love that Jotaro is dressed as ichiban by complete accident

3:16 As a huge fan of the Yakuza Series.. That was definitely the best way to start this off. The ''Segment'' sections made into Yakuza style Chapters was really awesome too, as well as the small nods (Like the font) and the incredibly satisfying ''Substory'' Jingle playing at the end, made this was goddamn amazing to watch. I'm so glad you got to experience and truly enjoy this amazing game.
I always just call the CPs Clown points
Seeing a the younger pre legendary hostess Yuki while im playing the yakuza kiwami 2 carbaret club mini game that features a cameo of a much older post legendary hostess yuki makes me feel warm inside.
Jirard: "But the best way to collect money in this game is..."
Me: "Beating Mr. Shakedown!"
Jirard: "The Real Estate and Cabaret Club side missions."
Me: "No."
I'm so happy I discovered this series and now it's gaining popularity in the west too. Zero was, as he said, one of the best games I've ever played in my entire life. I can't wait to play the rest of the series and continue to be frustrated by the annoyingly impossible minigames..
now you can continue with kiwarmi 1 and those are remakes of the first 2 games
I love the Yakuza style introduction at 3:18 lol👌
"Snitches Are Just B*tches."
I was not expecting that to come out of The Completionist's mouth, but well said lol! 😂😂😂
Playin' Yakuza like "Damn It Feels Good To Be A Gangsta"
Became a landlord & pimp, love it
Currently playing yakuza 0 and I'm up to chapter 7 and I'm addicte, I cant get enough of the game. I think its one of my favourite games of all time.
Holy shit, it actually happened. I was sure this would be next year at the earlliest.
I really needed the motivation from that opening. Thank you, Jirard.
When people say they want a GTA in London or the uk in general, I say I want a yakuza style game set in the uk
I am absolutely astatic that you got to play one of my most favorite games of that year! Zero was also my entry point into the series and I’ve been hooked ever since. Yakuza is the gift that keeps on giving. Thanks for completing it!
Look who finally completed Yakuza 0
Now have a nice change of pace and do Puppeteer? Please?
I wanna see him do Persona 5 next
Are you trying to kill him?
Yes! Persona 5 is gonna be the easiest one to get in to on PS3/PS4 (even at around 80-100 hours in just a first run through of the game with all the grinding of gear and Personas), as you need both a PS2 and VitaTV/PSTV to truely experience the 4 previous games in completion.
You'll need the following (in story order);
VitaTV/PSTV to play the PSP version of Persona 1 in total with the better translation and additional quest (PS1 version cut out the Snow Queen quest).
You can just emulate P1 and 2 on your phone. P3 and 4 can also be emulated if you have an ok computer.
I'm playing through this title for the first time thanks to Game Pass. Loving it!
Muramasa deserves a Completionist video. The art, the humor, the voice acting, its beautiful
Dont mess with us yakuza fans, we’re real estate experts.
whenever you talk about the completionist legacy show, im always sad i wont ever see it(im from middle Europe, not really an option to fly to USA), it seems like something i would really enjoy...still happy you do staff like that along with the channel
I’m watching this as I am currently downloading Yakuza 4 remastered.
Judgement was amazing and made me decide to check out the actual Yakuza series starting with yakuza 0 just recently.
