Goethe had a love affair with Friederike Brion at a young age and although he loved her very much, he said no to a relationship with her. Friederike didn't want to believe that and tried desperately to persuade Goethe to enter into a relationship with her. Hence the text: "I prick you so that you think about me forever and I don't want to suffer it." Not suffering is intended to express Friedericke's heartache and the "stinging" is intended to make Goethe always think of her in order to return her love.

Whichever interpretation of this poem you choose, it definitely is not a ditty but a very dramatic poem/song.
