So sad to see this happen. We lived only a couple of blocks away. I pray they will have all the need to rebuild. It’s such an important piece of south side chicago history.
@@youwish378 If and when that happens, yet another raggedy eyesore or vacant lot will exist in an historic Black neighborhood that already suffers from long term disinvestment. That’s a real positive. 😏
Such a shame. Not only because of the material damage. Not only because the memories lost. Not only because it will take longer to resume its services. But also because someone probably started that fire. I feel bad for the man who was running the place.
Growing up nearby 4500 South State I can state for the record that during the 70s and 80s we who resided in the condominiums nearby on State Street more especially the youth never benefited from that place nor the Urban League with their upitty Whitey begging/loving bowdown kneegroes!
Swift owned the stockyards back during its tenure...I don't live in Chicago anymore since 1980, Just wondering if there any remnants of that place still in existence as well [???]
Swift had a huge butchering & meat packing facility there. As did many other companies. But they didn't own The Yards. I believe it was the Vanderbilts who ended up as the major stockholder.
I think the plan is to close the bridge underpasses / trap everyone in when south Chicago is at maximum occupants, right now its at abour 15% of capacity. If the Mayor is going for the Krakow ghetto theme.
That guy who's talking is not the owner...he is a con artist. He's pretending to be the owner's son Marcus Perkins who actually started the fire. The tenants filed a lawsuit last week and he retaliated by shutting off the water Friday. Then he told the tenants that he would rather have the building condemned than pay. SMH now he has his friend playing like thats him on tv. smh they will get caught. The swift Mansion family that owns it were bankrupt.

So horrible. I hope it is QUICKLY restored and glad no one was hurt. I hope the owner has good insurance.
In the end God will bring it down himself 😁

Did he say they were helping the youth in Chicago? Their program is a failure
Probably why he set it on fire

All the history. Hopefully it can somehow be saved. The police need to find those people who started it.

The Stockyards? Nope. Pretty much a corporate park now.
Union Stockyards? Really just the old gate. There are some informational boards up and there to communicate it’s significance and history.

Possible fire started possibly due to planned immigrant housing location?
Another fire? Perhaps there's a link.
The homeless need to stay warm too!
Most of that old dilapidated property in that wretched cesspool of a community has been plagued with been unlivable for many years. Time to move on!
Sad
