For Shimano the directional way to fit the chain is with the writing on the outside, they don't put arrows on their chains other than on the quick link. I wax my chains so I do take them on / off quiet a lot, I like to replace the Shimano quick link with a gold KMC Reusable (so easier to identify it on the chain) one just to be on the safe side, the Shimano one that comes with the chain goes in the saddle bag as a spare. I've open / closed the Shimano one maybe 3-4 times and haven't had one fail but it does feel a bit looser after multiple uses but not to the point that it is likely to open because it's constantly under tension when installed and that keeps it in place.

I wax the two chains I use in rotation roughly twice a month and have been reusing the same quick links. The quick link doesn't get waxed and don't notice a change in shifting quality. Edit: I use the M8100 chain and the quick link it came with. 18$ a pop, can't beat that with a stick
