I came from Bristol to live in Bournemouth in 1983, studying at Bournemouth University. I have worked in security and retail for most of my working life, which also included periods of working for the Council. Many towns have suffered decline over the years, but Bournemouth's decline in terms of standards of living, social issues, crime, and decay is markedly higher than the average.
Mismanagement by the council, ill-conceived initiatives, and a lack of policing have sent the town into a permanent spiral of degradation.
Electric buses, big central bus and coach station, ice skating rink, swimming pool by the pier, Wimpy & Fortes plus posh shops in Westover Road, boat trips from the pier, department stores, lighting candles in the gardens. Lovely place and very safe....Oh wait...that was the 1960s.
Born and bred Poole and Bournemouth (57 yoa). The state of the Town is tragic now. The whole country in fact.
You newcomer! - Do you remember the Trolley Buses and West Station? - I do unfortunately!
The whole country is down the pan
@@marklatimer733357 they probably wouldn't but I do (64). My gran lived in Winton above & behind Sturton & Tappers. Used to love catching the trolleybuses down to the beach. Live here now but in the 60s came down on the coach into the old bus/coach station. My dad used to come down by train into Bomo West Station, sadly I never got to see it. From 1988 though I worked trains out of Bomo West depot as a guard & later as a driver. Worked with a lot of the old steam boys.
I've lived in Bournemouth all my life, and whilst there is plenty of nice things to do/see, the town has definitely gone down hill by a lot.
I've only lived here for about seven years, so I'm a comparative newcomer, an escapee form Cambridge, the same thing is happening there too, expensive rents and online shopping in my opinion, is to blame. Cambridge is only interested in the tourist trade and the University. Both places it seems want to push retailers out to places like Castle point.
Apart from my time in the Army, I have lived in Bournemouth all my life. (Born & bread).... The last time my wife and myself actually went for a walk around the town centre must be at least 5 years ago and it was dire then. I have so many memories of the town in the 70's. It was a busy town 6 days a week, obviously Sunday was closed back then.
Do I blame places like Castlepoint for the decline of Bournemouth, NO, I blame the muppets in BCP council who seem to live on a different planet to the residents of the borough, oh, and online shopping of course....
Great video though and you have got another subscriber...

Good to see you back and look forward to more walks around Bmth.👍
I'm happy to see a video from you ... I have missed them. Enjoyed the walk around town, and seeing the buildings, etc. What a beautiful sunny day ..... cold, but sunny.
Thank you!
🤗
Expensive parking fees, no real decent shops, excessive amount of homeless people, lack of police presence, and sky high rents for shop owners is what’s killed the town centre in my opinion. At night it’s ASBO central so not pleasant at all
Great to see your doing longer videos enjoyed the walk round the town xx
I live in Boscombe and feel safer there than in Bournemouth. I know this sounds weird but our nutters seem quite harmless compared to those in Bournemouth.
Have you had a look at Poole recently? I went a few months ago and it had actually improved compared to when I had to go regularly a couple of years ago. Much better than Bournemouth.
@@deanstuart8012
I stopped going to Poole when they closed Long Johns chip shop after the lockdown, I was gutted 😢
Yeah, Poole has improved immensely since the 90s/000s. I guess those little boutique shops on the left as you exit the Dolphin Centre are the clearest signal that somebody has been investing money into the place? They just need to smarten up the bus station and sort out that empty building opposite it. They look miserable. The Lighthouse is also starting to look tatty.
@@deanstuart8012 🤣🤣🤣
Enjoyed the nosey round what was once my home town. From what I could see, definitely not tempted to move back!
Was lovely to see another walk through😊
Bournemouth has a lovley beach
Come to the Bournemouth Oratory (catholic church) on Richmond Hill. It’s amazing. The Church will be 150 years old in February.
I used to live in bournemouth 15 years ago, i have a such good memories!! It was one of the best stage in my life,I made a good friends, the english school, the party times, everything was great and wonderful, it,s a pity everything had changed...
@@anonimo_2345 what go’s round comes round 🌅
had many Holidays here its so sad that all these seaside towns are suffering i live in Grimsby and its the same :(
Let me see, Castlepoint or Central Bournemouth? - Castlepoint with easy free parking or Central Bournemouth with Pain in the Sr5e very expensive car parks - Tricky isn't it!
Have lived in Bournemouth area for 35 years. The change for the worse is tangible. The authorities are either unable, or unwilling to tackle drug use and anti-social behaviour. Shoplifting has become the norm as the druggies know nothing will happen.
Bournemouth started going downhill when they began replacing and/or not replicating its beautiful Victorian architecture with soulless modern crp like the building on the left at the start of your video.
Bournemouth seems to be in a state of managed decline which is quite an accomplishment when it has some marvellous beaches and a respected university ❤
Bournemouth is incredibly depressing to live in, moved here for uni from Bristol with a good impression of the town as I used to come here on holiday in the summer a lot as a kid, but in the winter it is just an empty depressing grey hellscape
Great to see a new video from you man Great channel Nice to see how Bournemouth is getting on
I've lived here over 20yrs it's a shame to see it in such a mess totally different now then when i moved here very sad
I've been to Bournemouth a few times over the past couple of years. I'm not even sure it's a summer vs winter thing. The city centre is depressing. Major shops abandoned. Hotels also either closed or in dire need of updating.
Good to see you back doing the longer videos again mate
The creators market is probably the best place to actually support local businesses
I use to Bournemouth a lot visiting my friends, but not so much now as many clubs & bars have closed especially the xchange ( gay bar) but I see a lot has changed due to cost of living crisis, but great way to explore & just walk around get fresh air, thanks for sharing your experience and thoughts with us ❤keep up great work with your videos
It's surprising to hear how many people moved down here from the Bristol/Gloucestershire area, similar case for me. It feels like a very pivotal point with The Ivy recently opening, I'd like to hope if they stick around the town for a while we may see improvements!
Love England😊❤
I’ve been living in Bournemouth for 16 years now. I never go into the town centre as there are no good shops & there are too many beggars.?
I do one thing in Bournemouth now. Bank home. Cant even get a stamp now. I cam remember so many people in town. When Debenhams Beales and M@S shut that was the nail in the coffin. So sad. Tragic.BCP are responsible for this with high rates. No foot fall.
Apparently clubs shut down too. Bournemouths tourism affected too. Castlepoint didnt help. Many wont go there. Designed for those with cars.
Ive lived on Bournemouth for ten years now. Many nice areas to go, but i never venture into the Bournemouth high street area, unless im going to the cinema. Its always felt run down to me, which is an issue in many towns. The city centers I've lived in ( leeds, Liverpool and Manchester), seem to be the opposite where theres tons of people and the area isare lined with a mixture of decent stores, restaurants and bars, so is busy day and night
Last time I was in Bournemouth they had a German market got a beer in a plastic cup cost £9
Castlepoint hasn't sucked Bournemouth dry. Our Councillors and Landlords have with their greed. Time for God to humble them.
I moved the BCP area 23 years ago and it has really gone downhill. Such a shame as used to be a great town. I was there last week for an appointment and it was depressing. So many closed shops and people in doorways. Lots of knife crime goes on in the gardens too. I never ever go there anymore, despite working on the outskirts.
As a resident of BCP I across Bournemouth to shop at Castlepoint due to parking! BCP Council NEEDS to make more and cheaper parking and better cheaper public transport links. Local residents are being pushed out of town centres in favour of tourists. Even travelling to Wimborne and parking would be cheaper than parking at Bournemouth. Another issue is accessibility, due to the age of the buildings there are few lifts which is a big problem for new parents and people with limited mobility. Castlepoint did steal customers BCP gave them willingly. If we do go to Bournemouth we park at Coy pond and walk, it's a nice walk!
Makes you wonder why vital regeneration assets like car parks have been sold for more flats and overcrowding.
Expensive lettings, expensive car parking, online shopping, better areas to go (castlepoint), drug and homeless issues that are a stain on the area (thanks to the mass influx of rehab centres in boscombe). It's a shit hole and wont exist in 20 years unless the council changes.
Youre a brave man walking around Bournemouth town centre alone.
If you want to ride the Observation wheel, I guess we are just supposed to wrap our arms and legs around one of the spokes, and have a go-around that way ??? 🤔🤔
😂😂😂
There's a lovely cycle lane in poole that no one ever uses. Possibly cost millions, it's a managed decline and blame lies mainly with the local councils
Bournemouth has been dying for years ! I went about 10 years ago and half of it was shut then! cant imagine what its like now!
3 more shops shut yesterday , it was dead at 1pm R.I.P. Bournemouth 👎🏻
Highcliffe is part of BCP and it’s hard to see how?Two infrequent and unreliable bus routes into the main conurbation. Last bus leaves Bournemouth at 18:30. So we don’t stay in Bournemouth or Christchurch in the evening, hence the nighttime economy has declined, as others feel the same here. Trains across conurbation are infrequent and often hourly! Taxis are expensive to come home from Christchurch, let alone Poole or Bournemouth. Linking the transportation is key with later trains/buses and increasing frequency of both should improve people going out and spending money in bars and restaurants/ theatre/shopping etc and improve what was a vibrant area! Castepoint is nothing to brag about either. But yet again, for us, no direct buses/trains to Castlepoint!
The good news is we have a great Premier League team- but need a bigger stadium especially if we get European football this season!
What happened to our once beautiful town 😢
Como se usa el autobús público ?
I wouldn't say it's due to castle point. It has more to do with the extortionate business rates charged by the council and landlords, I only visit bournemouth for the BH2 cinema or the beach now as Poole seems to have more choices of shops.
All town centres have gone down hill, Bournemouth is no exception, however Bournemouth is so much more than its town centre, we live in Westbourne just 10 minutes away and its another world, friendly, great shops, village feel, and walkable to the Chines, the promenade, the beaches, we moved here from Buckinghamshire a good few years ago and absolutely love it down here, wherever we live we don't really hang around or go out in town centres, why would you? so many other nicer places to explore and visit in any town, the UK is in decline, that is obvious to most ordinary people, but make the best of wherever you live, you're dead a very long while, stop moaning about your lot and get on and enjoy the fact your heart is still beating, Bournemouth isn't that bad, there are definitely far worse places to live, plus .... best beaches on the south coast, in my opinion ❤
Why are you making knowledge public?!?!!? Ssshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.
Bournemouth has gone down hill, use to go on holiday’s with parents in the 70’s. It was buzzing and lovely .
Moved here in 2007, the place has died , full of Hen and Stags Do’s , druggies and drunks.
It was lovely when I first moved last 5 or 10 years , it’s not a great place to visit .
Would not recommend anyone to visit , save your money .
drove through there last year,it saddened me to see it as it is now.christchurch was terrible, full of takeaways and it stunk of cannabis
Quite frankly, Bournemouth is dead! The heart of the town has been destroyed and will not improve with high parking, high business rates and seasonal activities alone. Castle point seems to be thriving by comparison (free parking, easy access and big stores). As a local, most activities are high priced aimed at tourists, eating places are not places single women feel comfortable lingering in, and getting around if you have walking restrictions is a nightmare. Attempts to pedestrianise every main road may look nice and encourage cafes/bars to spill out onto the paved areas, and slow traffic but it impacts again on shops and mobility access.
When will they learn that "Pedestrianising" a town centre just kills it!!!!
Bournemouth suffers from poor council decisions. Look how grim everything looks....
They killed the high street with expensive parking vs castle point free parking.
Castlepoint is not to blame for the demise of the town centre. Castlepoint is an overrated waste of space. Internet and ridiculous car parking charges are to blame for the state of the town centre. And the BCP Council of course.
avoided christmas market in bmth as too many illegal migrants in the town so fear for my safety that is my opinion
I didn’t bother visiting the Christmas Market , plus all the trees in the garden. Same old crap each year.
Avoid going there in evenings, not been for about 10 months . And day time about 5 months .
Ghost Town .
I’ve lived in Dorset all my life. It’s such Shame it was years ago a thriving town and fun place to go shopping. It’s all boarded up and now a shit hole of a place. Don’t even like going there at night anymore.
A total dump. Destroyef by BCP. Sea and gardens left only.

If everyone didn’t order and online shops didn’t exist you wouldn’t see the sad state of our high streets you can blame the governments councils all you want but us the people are the main reason why our high streets are destroyed and now you just have crack heads and homeless lurking about in the 90s Bournemouth was a buzzing place to be the best shops the best pubs the best nightlife now it’s a cesspit
too depressing to watch...i left 5 years ago ..every time i go back its worse than before

Are there any British-born people living in Bournemouth anymore? Is the Ivy chain restaurant shut down and boarded up yet?
You need a new pier to accept the boats and a giant new immigration centre! Job Done!
Predictable dump.
