  • Wearing the proper types of squash shoes when you play squash will help you move better and reduce the risk of injury.
    Use shoes specifically designed for indoor court use and have good support for lateral (sideways) movement.
    Try on different brands and buy a brand that fits your feet well.
    If you can, buy two pairs and alternate between the two.
    If you are new to squash, WELCOME!, squash is a fantastic sport.

    Great advice! I personally have had good luck wearing low cut basketball shoes designed for indoor courts. Good support for lateral movement as well as a non-marking sole. If that’s all you have you could do a lot worse.

    • @BetterSquash
      @BetterSquash  3 роки тому +1

      Glad you like it. I have heard other people say that they like basketball shoes for squash, but would still advise using proper squash shoes if possible. There are some similarities in movement patterns between the sports, but 1, the floors are different (basketball courts are sealed, squash courts are sometimes sealed) and squash shoes are designed to protect the toe area because people drag their feet. That said, a basketball shoe is always a better option that running shoes or regular street trainers.

    Good advice. Any thoughts on how often you should buy new ones. Over time the internal support deteriorates yet the soles may still look good. The comment made about not wearing squash shoes outside of the courts is also good advice as it reduce the amount of dirt that is brought onto the court.

      Sorry, I replied to your comment a few days ago, but have only just noticed that it hasn't appeared.
      In general, if you play 2 or 3 times per week, then around every 9 months or so is recommended. if you play 4 or 5 times a week, then every 6 months. Once a week, would be about every year. However, if you have 2 pairs of shoes that you are alternating between, then those durations should probably be doubled.

    What are the top new shoes that you can recommend? I've been wearing some cheap adidas ligra 6s and the adidas essences. I need one or two new pairs. I want something that is good quality. I want to know what the best adidas shoes to buy are right now in 2019. The stabil x and the stabil bounce look pretty good. Are there any other brands that I should be looking at?

    • @BetterSquash
      @BetterSquash  4 роки тому

      Honestly, I don't have any useful advice to give you in this case. I have no knowledge of the current range of shoes, their different properties etc. My question is "Why do you need new shoes?" Is it because the current ones don't feel good or because they are falling apart? In some ways shoes are more important than rackets because the wrong shoes can cause injuries, but I would go through the following thought process:
      1. Do you want light weight or solid shoes?
      2. Are your feet unusual? For example, I have very wide feet and generally try for Adidas shoes as they seem to fit me better.
      3. Are colours important to you? if so, they brands like Eye or Salming might be a good start.
      I'm sorry I can't point to one specific brand or model, but for everybody who loves one brand or model, there is another person who hates it. As long as you buy non-marking shoes designed for indoor sports, all that really matters is how comfortable and durable they are.
      I hope that helps.

    Thanks for the explanations. Phillip, I am a futsal player and I do have 5 pairs of futsal shoes. Having that in mind, is it still neccessary to invest in squash shoes? Futsal shoes seem to have all the characteristics you mentioned: indoor, non-marking, descent upper and lower foot protection, (lighter than squash shoes tho, because of you have to feel the ball with the foot), made with idea of quick changing of direction while running on a high speed..... for example Munich G3 are my favorite (can't include a link, sorry)
    Thanks

    • @BetterSquash
      @BetterSquash  4 роки тому +1

      That's an excellent question. I had to do a little research into the type of shoe used in Futsal and I would say that whilst not as suitable as Badminton and volley ball shoes, I would be happy for you to continue using them. I would prefer you bought a proper pair of squash shoes, but if you can't them you should be fine with those.

      Hi, honestly, now that I don't have much contact with current shoes I don't feel comfortable recommending one. What I would suggest is seeing a professional bio-mechanist. I know that might not be easy or cheap, but part of being a professional is having a professional approach to everything your do. In addition, these are your feet and if you cause more injuries they may affect your life after squash. It's possible that some specially made insoles will allow you to wear almost any shoe.
      I'm sorry I can't be more helpful.

      Well, I've never seen Padel shoes in real life, but the upper looks suitable, my only worry would be whether the soles are non-marking. If you already have a pair and they are definitely non-marking, then I feel fairly confident in saying that will be okay for squash.

  • @PatriciaHinse

    Hi there, could you please further explain why Tennis shoes are not great for Squash? I noticed you said they're not designed for indoor court, but Adidas sells so called "Court control" shoes, so that suggests that they are designed for indoor court? I'm new to this subject and honestly wondering because most manufacturers don't seem to have a "Squash shoe" category.

    • @BetterSquash
      @BetterSquash  3 роки тому +1

      Great question. The reason that indoor tennis shoes are not suitable for squash is because the surface of an indoor tennis court is essentially like a carpet. A squash court floor should be made of unsealed wood (unsealed means that it doesn't have a varnish-type coating, which becomes VERY slippery when wet!). Tennis players often slide across courts, whereas in squash that shouldn't happen very often. That difference in movement affects the design and construction of the shoe
      Many manufacturers don't have a squash shoe range because the market isn't very big compared to other types of shoes, so they focus on that. With regard to the Adidas Control Court shoe, it might be suitable for squash, but I suspect it's designed for tennis. The sole pattern looks more suitable for surfaces other than wood - but I could be wrong.
      Of course, I don't know where you are based, but PDH Sports (www.pdhsports.com/c/q/brand/adidas/adidas-squash-shoes) has a great range of shoes and ships worldwide I believe. I have no connection with them. A visit to your local racket specialist shop would be useful because you can see and touch the shoes, and see the difference, if you have one nearby that is.
      I hope that explains a little more, but if you have ANY other questions about squash, please don't hesitate to ask.

    great tips. the problem is that it's so hard to find "squash shoes" everywhere.
    I live in Bari (south Italy) and the best I can find is some volleyball asics, that seems good to play squash too.
    If I'm lucky, in some period of the year I find something different, but I've never seen anything in the "squash sector"... in most cases, there's no "squash sector" at all :-(
    I could order online, but I need to try before I buy, so this is the real problem...
    Cheers from Italy

    • @BetterSquash
      @BetterSquash  5 років тому

      Yes, buying shoes is difficult. Unlike any other piece of equipment, you really need to try them first. Of course, rackets are like that, but you can borrow one from other people, not so shoes. That why I often recommend buying two pairs, when you find a really good pair. That way you have more time to find a replacement.
      Is there now where you can buy online that allows free returns?

    Hello. The basketball shoes are specifically designed for indoor. I'm playing squash for half a year in nike lebron 15 and these are just phenomenal. So use basketball shoes rather than squash shoes, I guarantee that's better

    • @hayhayeht
      @hayhayeht 5 років тому

      Although I wouldn't be as categorical as our coach, I think it's because basketball shoes cover your ankle higher and that's not suitable for the types of movement required for squash. That could limit your movement or cause injury. So take care and good squash :)

    • @BetterSquash
      @BetterSquash  5 років тому

      Hi, Yes, basketball court shoes are for indoor use, but the surface of a squash court is different from a basketball court. In addition, as Yahyah says, the high ankle is not ideal. I would also say that in the video I said "you shouldn't wear...", that means I advise against, but if you do use them and have no problems, then that's fine. I would definitely advise against using basketball shoes instead of squash shoes though.

    • @alfaking
      @alfaking 5 років тому

      I've used my basketball shoes for the first 2 months... I think there are a couple of problems.
      1) the sole is not "non marking", so maybe you are not allowed to play on every court (in my club yes, but maybe somewhere else no)
      2) basketball shoes are not excellent in lateral movement, there is not a support in the lateral part of the shoes
      3) if you use basketball shoes with high ankle, be aware that the movement in squash is completely different, and you could easely have problems with your ankle
      My personal advice is that you should give "squash shoes" a chance, you'll never go back to basketball shoes ;-)

    I was genuinely concerned about my opponent's safety. He told me he did not want to buy indoor court shoes since he only plays once a week. So he wears his running shoes that he put on at home. He did not care that he could mark up the court & bring in any dirt or small rocks from walking outside.

    • @BetterSquash
      @BetterSquash  9 місяців тому

      I do understand people not wanting to buy specific squash shoes, especially if they are not sure how much they are going to play, but at some point that mentality has to change. You comment has two aspects, the safety and the cleanliness of the court, and both are important. There's little you can really do except refuse to play, which would be an extreme. Ask him if he would go swimming in his underpants because that's using the wrong equipment for the job too.
