Another good/useful video from Brian as he gets within striking distance of 100iK subscribers... There is one really useful feature with the Flex/Motion combo that isn't easily duplicated with other devices. Let's say you wanted to do a good deed and keep an eye on a geezer (like me) relative or friend living in another home. You could install the Flex in their home on their WiFi with your credentials. I'd then mute the input and create a routine that was active between say 6 am and 9 am that would use the Flex motion and notify me when there is NO motion during that three-hour period. This gives an easy/affordable way to check w/o having the "creep factor" of cameras with motion triggers.

Would it be possible to also do a video or propose similar options for contact sensors? Thanks for this. I've tried a couple of motion sensors and they've been pretty flaky. So this has given me more insight into what I'm looking for make/model wise. Whilst I can get the couple of sensors to trigger routines, what they both failed to do was trigger a routine after a set period of inactivity after the inital motion trigger, ie trigger a light on on motion detection. Trigger the light off after no motion detected after 5 minutes. Is this something you have acheived with the sensors you have?

    Finally!
Thx Brian, been waiting for this list since Sylvania stopped making their sensors. Really a shame because all their zigbee stuff has been rock solid over the last couple of years and they included a combined temperature sensor in the contact and motion sensors. Noticed that you did not include info on any of these motion sensors having a temp sensor and the ability (or not) to trigger routines. Overall a nice video but I'm still underwhelmed by the marketplace's selections. Once Amazon included a hub in all their regular Echos, I thought the floodgates would open by now with sensor availability. Also Hue needs to really rethink their pricing. Why would anyone pay $40 when you could get 2 of the Linkinds for that same amount?

    • @AutomateYourLife
      @AutomateYourLife 3 роки тому

I really liked those Sylvania ones too and I hope they realize what they're missing out on and get back in the game.
The temp sensors is a real problem with Alexa. They don't bring in anything other than the motion here and so there's a loss with sensors that could do more!

I know the Hue sensor is expensive, but it works and works reliably. I don't use it with an Echo, but I do use it with deCONZ hub and I get the 10 second cooldown, which is the quickest of any battery operated device I have tried. Tuya and Xiaomi are about 90 seconds, which seems to be what SOnOff's one is as well, when it actually works. I also like the fact that Hue has a temperature and light sensor and they seem pretty accurate. I know Paul Hibbert would hate me saying that, but they just work. SmartThings would be my next choice.

@@AutomateYourLife Would appreciate any help. I've been on with LinkInd customer service who are very responsive and helpful, and are mostly confirming my test results. I also moved my hub to my office along with the sensor to test & rule out connectivity. Here's observed behavior best I can tell:
      1) Detects Motion. Sends motion detected to Echo 4th Gen. Light comes on perfectly.
      2) At ~25 seconds, Linkind sends "No Motion Detected" even if motion is ongoing. This seems a default setting primarily as a security sensor after a motion was sensed. In Alexa Privacy Settings, you always see motion not detected within 1 minute of motion detected, regardless of motion.
      3) Echo initiates my 'No motion detected' routine @ 25 seconds & lights go off after xxx minutes.
      4) Unfortunately, LinkInd will not send a new motion detected until the sensor itself has not sensed motion for 60 seconds. Lights will not come back on until I am still for 60 seconds.
      5) Remain still for 60 seconds, then lights will come back on.
I then thought to just create a routine to simply turn lights off after 5 minutes, and wave a hand to turn back on. However, the sensor will never send a new motion detected command unless there's been no motion for 1 minutes. In this instance:
      1) Lights on for 5 minutes
      2) Remained in motion.
      3) Lights still went off at 5 minutes.
      4) Remained in motion
      5) Lights never came back on
      6) Stay still 60 seconds then lights come back on
      Similarly w/ 5 minute timer:
      1) Lights on for 5 minutes
      2) I remained motionless for 3 minutes, and then retriggered a 2nd motion at 3 minutes. Lights on routine was kicked off again at minute 3.
      3) Lights still went off at 5 minutes.
      4) Light on 2nd motion completes at 8 minutes to try to turn lights off again (I had a voice command to notify when lights off command sent) however lights already off
Appreciate any verification and/or comments. Thanks!!!

It's bang on everytime, but expensive. Same with the Aeotec Motion Sensor for SmartThings. There's a really nice, cheap one in this lineup review: ua-cam.com/video/ad4MQgb_cfg/v-deo.html.

Great question. So most of these sensors use Zigbee. When it uses Zigbee, it needs a "Hub" in the home to connect to. Zigbee Hubs are in some Echo speakers (Echo 4th Gen, Echo Show 10, Echo Studio), so you can use those. Now some of these are cameras and WiFi based, so you can use those with your Dot. :)

The echo flex for instance doesn’t therefore it becomes pretty useless as a motion sensor to automate light switches . Man I watch all of your videos and I really wanted this one to answer some questions for me but it fell short... It was titled Alexa motion sensors but there was very little talk of the Alexa integration and it reliability with Alexa routines and a really high amount of SmartThings mentions.
It did answer the Aqara question for me because I had gotten one to work with an Alexa routine but tried 2 others that did nothing. It shows in the Alexa app and indicates motion but nothing happens.
I'm also having trouble with the reliability of the Wyze motion sensors and I do have the Wyze home security hub so they should work perfectly. One will turn on the lights but not turn them off and another will do the opposite... again..indicating motion but doing nothing.
One issue with the video is the lack of expanded talk of the Alexa device being a Zigbee hub...so you paired all of these directly with the Echo device? You did not use a hub associated with the motion sensor's brand to be a bridge? If paired directly did they all have the same functionality as they would have with their own hubs? You mentioned it with the Hue one but the rest didn't get that love.
At the end of the day it doesn't really matter what they look like. They stand out at first but fade from notice as time goes on. The main thing is the integration and reliability. The cooldown period is not even really all that important unless retriggering is your thing.
Like I said I watch them all dude....love them....love your humor....but you clickbaited me.

    • @AutomateYourLife
      @AutomateYourLife 3 роки тому

I clickbaited you with a 30 minute video that gives you 5 to 6 good options for motion sensors? Tough crowd.
      Things I think you missed:
      1. The date of this release is before Wyze Home Monitoring was available on the market. Regardless, Wyze Sense HAS been terrible and so I'm not going to talk about that as a solution at all. Wyze Cam's are now TERRIBLE with Alexa for motion sensing, so I addressed that. I actually warned you about Wyze, didn't I? Annnnd I talked about reliability in that segment, if I remember correctly. So...you're using a product I didn't recommend and you're asking me to address it in a video released before it existed.
      2. I didn't talk about reliability of the other solutions because, simply put, they're perfect. If a Zigbee Motion Sensor doesn't work for you with Alexa nowadays, it's interference...or a tech spec like cooldown/distance/field, or perhaps a weak transceiver.
      3. I said I was going to connect them directly to the Zigbee hub in the Echo/Show 10/Etc.. That's right in the video near the start. I think if I remember correctly I even stated which Echo products had the Zigbee hub in them so you'd know which to buy for those sensors.
On the part of the Hue sensor, I only added that piece in because it was such a remarkable improvement when paired with the Hue Hub. The Cooldown of 10 seconds is unheard of, and actually, a lot of people care about that.
Otherwise, what I'm hoping you gained from that segment (about the Hue Hub) is that adding in another hub to manage motion sensors REDUCES reliability. So don't do it and expect it to work perfectly anymore...hence the focus on motion sensors that actually are going to work and pair directly with your Echo, and the lack of discussion about other hubs in the video in general.
As I write this, I get the sense that you're missing the fact that adding in a second hub creates a whole cloud connection/service issue that reduces reliability. That's your issue with Wyze, likely. It's one of the reasons I don't talk about those solutions as much anymore, unless I find really solid integrations like there is between SmartThings and Alexa (reliability wise). The content on AYL doesn't use those integrations unless it has to, because it's a lower reliability.
There's a lot of nuance and detail in a video like this. I could literally spend hours in a video trying to explain every detail to folks that feel clickbaited, but that's likely to stop you from watching because it won't all be relevant to you, right?
The fact is, I put a lot of thought into exactly what shows up in a video, even one as long as this. I hope that's a little clearer for you now in this response.

I have had a completely different experience with the Wyze cam person detection. We have several camera is covering our yard and The person detection has been perfect. If someone walks in our yard, or comes on our porch, or goes into our carport, or goes into our storage room, Alexa devices all over the house safe something like, "Person detected at left yard." Or, "Person detected at carport." We also have some cheap Dots on our carport, back porch, deck, and storage room, that we turn up at night. Anybody who comes into that area at night here's a real loud announcement that they've been detected. You can turn it on and off easily so that when the landscape guys come to mow, you're not constantly hearing that they've been detected. Anyway, this video was done 2 years ago and, at least in our experience, is out of date and inaccurate on this issue.
