I remember watching this on mtv and there was no promotion for it. With no social media technology like today, this was like a beautiful mystery. All I remember was that it was promoting both her ballads greatest hits album and the Marvin Gaye covers album. Absolutely stunning cover and video. Madonna never dissapoints.
This song is just so beautiful. It is very emotional, sensitive, sensual and passionate. It is one of her underrated works, but as most of them are, this too is amazing
OP is correct. The song is a cover of a Marvin Gaye song, but the beat and most of the instrumentation on this track was created by British trip hop act Massive Attack.
There was almost a chance that Madonna was going to sing on Teardrop by Massive Attack too. One of the guys in the band (Mushroom) sent a demo Teardrop to Madonna and she wanted to sing on it following this collaboration, but the other two members of the band (3D and Daddy G) wanted to go with Liz Fraser of the Cocteau Twins instead on vocals so we imagine what might have been.
This is where the real sentiments of Madonna's amazing music come alive. Listen to the breathy and airy spaces between the lines, where the mood flows the strongest, with the beat to back it up thanks to MA, and her vocaiicious lines in the song deliver unequivocal meaning to it all. Magnifico!!
My mother ordered the 'Something to Remember' soundtrack from Columbia House back in the day. I was about 8 yrs old, out of all the songs on the album this one was my fav. It was dark and ominous and beautiful. My mother always skipped it for some reason haha. Being so young, i didnt know anything about Collabs with Massive Attack and in my teens got re introduced to them, was elated when i discovered they had contributed to this tune. Such a memory. Have never before seen the music video. miss music videos like these ones..... 🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤
You can hear the heartbeat and all the malfunctions of the heart with Massive Attack's sounds, Madonna's voice is the centre of that heart. High profile project that made me purchase the only hip hop album I own "Inner City Blues: the Music of Marvin Gaye". I recommend it, it's worth a listen because it has blues and R'n'B proposed by great artists.
This collab was a stroke of genius. Aparently Madonna was supposed to sing their song Teardrops, but they thought her voice didn't suit the song. So they gave her this. The orchestra version is absolutely stunning
that's partly true- the Teardrops demo was around by this time but original singer Tracey Thorn wasn't able to commit to the record due to her work with Everything But The Girl. Madonna was considered but, by this point, was already starting pre-production work on Evita and was too busy also to commit.
Not True !!! I directed this video, I listened to the version Madonna had created which was really good However I kept hearing the song slowed down and stretched out!!! I told Madonna what my idea was and suggested massive attack and Nelly Hopper ... She asked Who's going to ask Massive attack and i said I would.... I knew Nelly and Grant - The rest is History x Earle Sebastian.
I love reading all of these comments. No sarcasm. I remember when this song was released and everyone hated it. Every review I read complained about how she was trashing Marvin Gaye's legacy in the worst possible way. I loved it right away. But, I loved Madonna, so anything made me happy. Seeing her successful made me happy. I'm so glad that I'm finally reading the love and respect that this work deserves.
Madonna is amazing. What a combination of talent. Also always been a huge fan of Massive Attack and other Trip Hop inspired acts like Portishead, Unkle, DJ Krush, Tricky, Allflaws
Find myself revisiting all these hidden gems more than two decades later. Many people derided Madonna’s collaboration with Massive Attack. But I think this has aged superbly. I’m ready for a return to Trip Hop, it feels very appropriate for the world we’re living in now. The production on this is beautiful. The strings and brass section is powerful, some beautiful harp, and all layered over hypnotic beats. Superb.
Thank you Madonna for letting me know I'm not the only one who has felt/sometimes feels this way and how heartbreaking it can be... and it can go on for years and years... and life is short......
This music video basically sums up how much unrequited love really hurts which I've definitely experienced. It makes me want to reach through the screen and give her a great big hug; the level of hurt that Madonna expresses in this song is so raw that it makes her appear vulnerable in the most glamorous way imaginable. Love it! It's fantastic.
This is the perfect example of an ideal cover. It’s like a spice which elevates and exalts the original, highlighting its most nuanced and hidden aspects.
I couldn't agree more, the 90's was her best decade. All three studio albums were class! No cheese! All great production, great lyrics, and she played to a mature audience, no bubblegum pop!
At the time this song was released, Madonna was not respected by "serious" musicians, considering her just a light pop star... I remember everyone was surprised to hear it and many people couldn't believe that musicians like Massive Attack would like to do a collaboration with her. Then she released Ray of Light and everything changed for good.
@@MrKarmapolice97 Ray of Light was after Evita, this song was after the Erotica controversy when she was trying to "clean" her image in the US [this song > Evita > Ray of Light]
@@givemeanaxe , exactly what I was thinking. Her first album came out in 83. This song was released in 95. She had a ton of "serious" musicians respecting her at this time. 😉
Coming back to this I would like to add something; Actual "SERIOUS" musicians dont consider Pop Music artists as something diminiutive, less than perjorative market. A statement like yours displays how little knowledge you actually possess about the music industry. If you have had the opportunity to gain that knowledge in your life, then it was blocked by your immature and myopic bias. Which you should let go off and start actually enjoying life beyond your little bubble of petty elitism. Tons of SERIOUS musicians work with pop artists everyday. And respect the shit out of them too.
I'm glad Madonna never made a full album with them since I can just imagine a**holes spreading the false narrative that "it's a great album only because of Massive Attack" everywhere, and also we wouldn't have gotten Ray of Light in 1998. That timeline is perfect for her career history and it should not be disrupted.
@@CrystalCoffin Yes, maybe you're right. I didn't think about that, if she would made an album with Massive Attack, than maybe we wouldn't have Ray Of Light.

@@kostas.palierakis it's called unrequited love. Obviously the lyrics convey that she's involved with this man and that she caught feelings and he maybe only wants her for sex and she can't help but feel ghosted and rejected.

I wore the Something to Remember album out. Had it on cassette till it broke then brought the CD and played it out, until the scratches took over. One of my all time favorites from Madonna.
I was there when this was released and people didn´t like it at first cos this was WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY AHEAD for its era, but now we know she was always ahead!!
Way ahead of its era? Why people always use that phrase like a penny.... Just cause they know how to put it together.. frustrating .... This wasn't ahead of its era ... It was just something different and people always wants the same from the artist... Either it's good or not ...
This is just one of the best Pop ballad of all time, her voice is incredible and I think she looks absolutely adorable❤️ and the video ist pure art in perfection 👍👍
Except it's not a pop ballad, it's a cover of a soul ballad by Marvyn Gaye, and when you hear the original you realize why this is nowhere near as popular
@@erregi4946 The fact that you question the quality of the Marvyn Gaye version, suggests that either (a) you haven't even heard it, or (b) you're knowledge of music creation and production is severely limited or (c) your taste in music is so skewed that you can't even appreciate a masterpiece that would normally cross genre's in terms of appreciation. Madonna's version is good (although I actually prefer her version of 'Love don't live here anymore' from the same Album which does easily stand up to the original from Rose Royce). However, Marvyn's version, of 'I want you' from start to finish, had a musical arrangement, evolution, groove, atmosphere (with a heavy emphasis on instrumentation rather than just the effect of reverb) and production that was iconic (and always will be regardless of the advance of technology). It was way ahead of it's time which is why it still stands out to this day. Then there were the vocals. Madonna, great artist that she was/is, we know can write, sing and perform some of the best pop music, and she's creative enough to reinvent her image/style to stay relevant as time changes. But she's never been one of the best vocalists. Marvyn, on the other hand (which I'm sure even Madonna herself would agree) is one of the most legendary vocalists of all time, as he demonstrates on his version of this. So, coming back to your question "you compare quality with popularity"? the answer is NO. The quality of Marvyn's version stands out on it's own (so it's already implied that the quality is better). I'm just drawing attention to the fact that Pop (short for Popular) music is mainstream, so by it's very definition is listened to by the majority of the music loving public, whereas Soul music is and was more of a niche, so it typically never reached as wide an audience, unless it was THAT GOOD that it could transcend the genre trap and hook even die hard pop fans, which is what Marvyn's version did. I rest my case !!!!!!!!!!
@@never_pharma1412 Appreciate the priceless lesson but first you belittle my musical knowledge without knowing me, second you YT people have to give up to respond nonsense just to have the last post. "What's going on"?
Rare is the occasion when I will opt for a cover version of an original rendition of a given song. But in this case, with all due respect to the late Marvin Gaye, Madonna Louise Ciccone absolutely soars on this track. She understands and succinctly articulates all of the subtle nuances of the lyrics, which tended to get obscured by the production in Gaye's rendition. A high drama masterpiece.

Definately in my top 5 Madonna songs of all time. Just fell in love with it the first time i saw the video when it came out. She looks and sounds so beautiful..
Because she’s great if she’s not moving her mouth, or if she is singing lyrics... it’s convincing; otherwise embarrassing if she reads a line, like her movies, sans Evita (singing).
arturgallery she should be rich enough to pay a set of (good but not so famous) professionals that produce a script, story and movie that match her wishes, style, image and so on. Instead of going for a story not suited for her and being made by a famous director who is unwilling. Something like „punch drunk love“ or „jcvd“ or „Copland“ . A movie where you think wow, I never assumed this actor was capable of delivering such quality. While I think she can communicate what she wants, perhaps she’s also a control freak which may be harmful for such a project.

Massive Attack created a hell of an atmosphere in this song.
Lee Yan this is Marvin Gaye cover not MJ
OP is correct. The song is a cover of a Marvin Gaye song, but the beat and most of the instrumentation on this track was created by British trip hop act Massive Attack.
Okay, mate. But I didn't say it is MJ cover, at least I didn't mean that)
Robert Palmer - Mercy Mercy Me/I Want You
There was almost a chance that Madonna was going to sing on Teardrop by Massive Attack too.
Magnifico!!
I love comments like these
❤
Madonna needs to do a full Trip Hop album and collaborate with Massive Attack, William Orbit and Stuart Price again.
Preach 👏
Abhiroop Bhattacharya yeeeeeeeeeeessssssss preach I've been saying that for ages it'll be a masterpiece the genre fits her so well and it's amazing
yes william orbit
We lost her years ago when she joined the hip hop trash trend instead of making her own path as she used to. Sad.
And Patrick Leonard.
Every single thing here is brilliant. The arrangement, her voice, the video ….. and Madonna!
Still Loving this decades later ❤
A pice of art... Madonna looks like an angel here
My mother ordered the 'Something to Remember' soundtrack from Columbia House back in the day.

Hay I remember Colombia house
You can hear the heartbeat and all the malfunctions of the heart with Massive Attack's sounds, Madonna's voice is the centre of that heart. High profile project that made me purchase the only hip hop album I own "Inner City Blues: the Music of Marvin Gaye". I recommend it, it's worth a listen because it has blues and R'n'B proposed by great artists.
One of Madonna's greatest videos, this video proves that she's amazing actress
This music video is a genuine masterpiece!!!
Madonna is so beautiful!
So underrated.
Robert Palmer - Mercy Mercy Me/I Want You
Only the end of video is a little bit soft... She had to dissapear in the dark instead of taking phone and not answering
I can’t imagine anyone else doing Teardrop besides Liz Fraser. Her voice is utterly sublime.
The string section layered on a 90s trip-hop drum pattern is the peak of musical genius.
@@marshas.9218 And she wrote those utterly sublime lyrics. 🖤
People are finally admiring MDNA that was so hated in 2012... can't wait for 2029 when people start valuing Madame X
Me too. Madame X have songs that like a X-ray of her soul.
Me encanta el vídeo y la canción muy bueno, mdn es genial! 😂❤
i loved it when it came out....M does whatever she wants and makes it happen. putting someone down who is successful is so WRONG
Welllll I don't hate this song at all on the contrary I LOVEEEEE ITTTT

Everything is underrated for kids these days!

Haha almost 5 mil in 5 years, loves it😊
Find myself revisiting all these hidden gems more than two decades later.

I want this classy sensual Madonna back.
Buy her new album then
I couldn't agree more, the 90's was her best decade.

Was she trying to get Evita at this time?
@@MrKarmapolice97 Ray of Light was after Evita, this song was after the Erotica controversy when she was trying to "clean" her image in the US [this song > Evita > Ray of Light]
Youre smoking something if you think Madonna wasnt respected by serious musicians before ray of light.
This is when the queen used to collaborate with real great artists!
OMG! I am so slow tonight. I just got it. This is a remix of Marvin Gaye's classic. Madonna looks beautiful & she sounds beautiful.
Never hear this before... how could this be possible.... brilliant track... Madonna voice flows and blend so naturally with electronic music 😊😊😊
i hope you are aware that this is the legendary marvin gaye who sang it originally.

Sadly, that she haven't made the whole album with Massive Attack.

Of course this song is a masterpiece stupid, the best performance from Madonna ever, this deserved a Grammy award. fucking academy !
A true masterpiece and Madonna shows that she is a good actress - and her singing is very beautiful
Massive Attack’s 3D and Hooper flew to New York and spent two days in the studio with Madonna. 3D commented on the recording session in interviews with The Face (Nov/95) and ChannelV TV (Jun/98) respectively:
“She sang it really well, she had it sorted out, you could tell she knew the song, she’d really worked fucking hard on it. Fucking good. It was quite freaky for me because I’m just a Bristol boy. She was singing in my ear as we were playing the music down, giving me her version of it. I wasn’t taking any notice at all really. I was just thinking about how mad it is. She is such an icon it takes you a while to adjust. When she was in the vocal room, it was amazing. We did a few takes just to cover it, but she sang it so well we could have done it in one take. It was that beautiful.”
Wow, this is my first time seeing this. Big fan of Marvin Gaye, Madonna, Massive Attack, this is genius!
I wore the Something to Remember album out. Had it on cassette till it broke then brought the CD and played it out, until the scratches took over. One of my all time favorites from Madonna.

Except it's not a pop ballad, it's a cover of a soul ballad by Marvyn Gaye, and when you hear the original you realize why this is nowhere near as popular
@@never_pharma1412 and you compare quality with popularity?
A high drama masterpiece.
she's cool here. but no one's cooler than Marvin :) listen to various mixes of his song, especially Mike Maurro's.
Madonna always has done great covers like Love don't live here anymore, Fever, Don't Cry for me Argentina, Ray of Light and American Pie.
I like the slowed down tempo of her cover over the original which I think is too fast. But credit goes to Nellee Hooper imo.
Madonna reste cette femme UNIQUE!

Definately in my top 5 Madonna songs of all time. Just fell in love with it the first time i saw the video when it came out. She looks and sounds so beautiful..
I still feel like none of madonna's film roles reflect her acting talent as some of her best performances in her better videos.
Because she’s great if she’s not moving her mouth, or if she is singing lyrics... it’s convincing; otherwise embarrassing if she reads a line, like her movies, sans Evita (singing).
Maybe because she is in control in her videos and act herself
arturgallery she should be rich enough to pay a set of (good but not so famous) professionals that produce a script, story and movie that match her wishes, style, image and so on.
