I'm the same about being scared of drawing the crap drawings. I recently saw an artist whose work I really admire put up a series of drawings of something she found challenging going from first attempt to the fifth (and final). She was really open about struggling at first, really hating the third, going wild with the fourth, nailing the fifth. Her big take away was 'I realised I don't have to like all of my drawings. The ugly ones are just as useful to my process.' Totally changed how I see my 'failed' drawings and redrawing/new attempts are way more fun now.
Yeah ... it's a mental thing isn't it. Art for me is 50% leveling up art skills, and 50% leveling up mind skills. Are you totally ok with the ugly drawings now? What you've said here reminds me of something Lee White said on the 3 Point Perspective podcast. He was talking about nasty comments and instead of being afraid of them and seeing them as negative, he turned them into a game. Every time he gets a nasty comment now, he adds them all up and when he gets enough, rewards himself with a treat lol So, in a strange way, he is happy to get them now lol He's turned a negative into a positive. Same as what you're saying here, instead of seeing the ugly drawing as ugly and wrong, see it as an ugly work in progress that leads to the big treat of a tasty looking drawing :)
@@SOPHiELAWSON I like the treat system :D Might have to pick it up myself. Still not 100% at peace with the crap drawings, but I'm much better at not spiralling out and thinking I should quit art forever lmao. I've started to understand why I wasn't able to produce what I was aiming for and it usually comes down to not enough references, too much pressure, need a break... I also try to remember that when I'm disappointed with a piece now, I'll 9 times out of 10 end up seeing it months down the line and thinking 'hey that's not bad at all!'. We all need a bit of distance from where we wish we were to actually see what we've made.
@@electricitywoman What a cool comment! I can relate to that 'hey that's not bad at all' ... I also get the 'how did I think this was good' ones too lol Weird isn't it, how things change over time. Just shows how much of this is all in the mind. Guess, as long as we're creating something, that's all that really matters :)
@@SOPHiELAWSON I haven’t ordered the book yet but I will later👌 I was also looking into some zbrush books to pair it with when ordering, so I’m pretty excited for them to come.
If you voiced a character, that would be my favourite character. There's just something about your voice dude, also, great review, I'm getting this book👍🏾
amazing that you pu this out. I really want this book now =D WIll draw aall the characters as a new project. THank you again, keep on doing what you love
I bought the book but the cover doesn’t unfold like this one :( I was excited about that page with the eyes and mouths. Could you tell me the name of the artist who did those?
Hello Gika, That's not good :( I've taken some photos for you of the two covers, it lists on the bottom all the names of the artist ... there's quite a few. Cover 1: sophielawson.com/CREATING-STYLIZED-CHARACTERS-cover-1.jpg Cover 2: sophielawson.com/CREATING-STYLIZED-CHARACTERS-cover-2.jpg Please let me know if this helps :) That is a cool page, maybe you can sketch the eyes and mouth off the image, if you want me to scan the page into my computer directly for a higher quality photo, let me know :)
SOPHiE LAWSON Thank you so much! You’re very kind :) This is how the book looks for me, in fact it doesn’t unfolds at the cover or the back of the book! It’s a shame they still show the other version of the book in their website... i.ibb.co/Q8LNdDv/F31-DE91-C-2-AFA-4-FCF-8-B95-60-B9-EE74-DE47.jpg Then I saw the contributors page at the end of the book and it’s a fact they didn’t include those two artists for this version.
@@gisakur15 That is a bit odd. You know, I would contact 3DTotal Publishing and ask if you can get the fold out one. They are so kind, I'm sure they will help you if they can. Maybe that fold out one was a first print or something though? It is a bit odd!
Someone else mentioned this before in an earlier comment ... I would contact 3dtotal publishing if you really want that version, see if they can help you. Very weird though why they removed that bit?
@@SOPHiELAWSON i guess they printed it for first edition printing copies only. So your one belongs to limited edition copy. Thanks for the effort with providing the pictures of those two pages.
This is cool book, but how can I get benefit from this book? I mean, it seems weird if I copy the characters and everyone who buys the book does that and we end up drawing the same style
Yeah ... I talked about this sort of ting during one of the recent Art Fundamentals art-ickle podcasts ... I feel like the key is to learn how to see like an artist ... this book will teach you art fundamentals, and you can learn how the artists do their lines, shapes, colours etc by copying the characters; Than you take what you've realised and create your own characters using the lines and shapes you like from different artists, so everyone ends up with their own style ... which is really a combination of lots of styles they've studied/copied :)
Evander Dornelles Hello, thank you for the comment. I don’t know much about 3D art, but this book is all 2D art, the text you may find some useful information though? Hi, what about the content? Is it still the same? Found the same book on a local store with the same cover as yours.
WG Yes it’s the same content! Just those illustrations got removed. I found one of the artists Danielle Pioli and ordered her book of art tips too.

Dude what happened to your voice
Long story, but multiple operations during me 20's weakened me larynx so the air doesn't always flow cleanly through the vocal folds :)
please stop smoking
