You're completely right. Eventually they're gonna start having dumb stuff like strings and woodwinds too. This is nothing more than a twisted way to ruin tradition and kill the foundation of what created drum and bugle corps to begin with.

Msybe they started with a large gasp on count 1, but continued to slowly breathe in over the next 3?

Breathe out for 2 counts, then breathe in for the next 2 before you play
I believe it’s called machine breathing, breathing before you play, release that air and then take the breath you need to play
they probably just really need the four whole counts to breath. Especially for what they’re about to play😳
