The only problem of conforming their practice to Scripture is that the Scriptures were not yet established and distributed. So the early Christians didn't use "Scripture Alone" because they didn't have them, they used the "Teaching of the Apostles" as their guide.
Of course they referred to the Scriptures! What do you think Jesus and the apostles used? Jesus rebuked Satan by using the Scriptures by saying: “It is written.” He clearly says at Luke 24:27: “And starting with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them things pertaining to himself in ALL THE SCRIPTURES.” And at John 17:17 he says: “Your Word is Truth.” The apostle Paul preached to the people in the city of Beroea, and “they received the word with the greatest of eagerness of mind, carefully and examining the SCRIPTURES daily as to whether these things were so.” (Acts 17:10,11) Paul also stated that “ALL SCRIPTURE is inspired of God.” (2 Timothy3:16) This meant the Scriptures were reliable and could be trusted because Holy Spirit was used.
They did refer to The Law and The Prophets since they were mostly speaking to Jews. Jesus and the Apostles used the Septuagint, the Greek translation. The early Church spread the Good News using what Jesus had taught them orally. They didn't carry around scrolls under their arm. 2 Thess. 2:15 15 "Therefore, brothers, stand firm and hold fast to the traditions that you were taught, either by an oral statement or by a letter of ours". But my point was they didn't use Scripture alone, but also the teaching of the Apostles found in Apostolic Tradition. @@sunnyjohnson992
Sola scriptura defeats itself. One must rely on the Ecumenical Councils to accept scripture. But if one follows same Ecumenical Councils they cannot be Protestant. (Must be Orthodox)
We have the Word of God today in one book. This book GOD has given us, if you went off the rails & don't believe that then yes, you have an issue. The letters of the early had all kinds of opinions & doctrine issues just as we do today. 500 years ago someone like you would pull up writing from Benny Hinn, Kenneth Copeland & John Travolta praising them as church fathers. I'll just be a pea brain & consider the church fathers as those in my KJV. Another thing to take into consideration is the work of Satan. The RCC has showed us that. They have manipulated history, scripture & traditions to meet their agenda. Still today the Pope's henchmen are at it in our political systems, public systems & theological systems, you may even be sitting next to one in church. All I have is GOD'S Word that lives, breathes & is inspired by HIM. Is HIS hand of protection on that? You betcha. I also get to have HIS Spirit to teach me. So.................if I'm wrong at all of this and I stand at judgment would I be judged because I didn't listen to or follow man's letters & writings, man's doctrines & traditions, didn't follow a false RCC church but clung to what GOD has kept true by HIS power? I'm sticking to the script! What I do know is when I look into Catholsism I see evil, the anti Paulines - evil, the Hebrews Roots movement - evil and my spirit is grieved. There is nothing but confusion in there with all their extra reads of opinions & wrongs. The Gnostics were an example left for us - Beware
They are actually schismatics. The Catholic Church is the true church established by Christ on Peter as the Rock. And it was Peter alone who received the keys, no other Apostle.
@@TruLuan sure, that’s why Peter built fist church in Antioch. And clearly scripture reads Christ commands his followers to follow only one bishop. In John 0:00 and Mark 0:00 and Luke 0:00
Please show me where Christ established the sacrament of confirmation, personally and immediately before Pentecost, not through the agency of the apostles. The same with Penance. And no- empowering them to bind and loose in regard to the canonical discipline is not identical to sacerdotal powers inherent in the soul. Empowerment by the Spirit to be agents of discipline in the Church is not the same as empowerment to remit the eternal guilt due to sin.
this podcast would be a lot better. If you would let the guest speak more and interject less. The Facebook quote had nothing to do with what the author was espousing and quite frankly detracted from the flow of the presentation.
I wouldn't waste your time here. There is so much wrong regarding the context of Pliny the Younger and the Elder (his uncle). You can get this same information from Wikipedia. It reads like 2 people who watched a 10 minute video on the 2 and did their best to pad 40 minutes. Not great.
Isn't this great content? Thank you sharing so valuable information for the reformed community.

So are you saying that early Christians had holy water and venerated the decayed foot of Saint Stephen?
My opinion is, acapella is the purist form of worship, which is what the early church practiced.
Pelikan-great book!
I read many of the letters from 1st century of church, present day practice would be a abomination

How can you study the ancient church and still be “reformed”? You should be Orthodox-the only ecclesiastical body keeping the ancient faith today
