Schemansky. He placed 3rd in Tokyo 2 years later, age 40. Gary was only 19 during these world championships, dubbed in Strength and Health Magazine the "world's strongest teenager." There were still quite a few splitters around in '62, not like today where you'll find virtually none in Olympic lifting's stratospheric ranks.
@@samuelclemons508 A little before my time. My first competition was in 1966, the last in '73. Interesting side note on Gary Gubner. He won gold medals at the 1961 Maccabiah Games in weightlifting, shotput and discus. In '73, a much lighter Gary Gubner tried out for his second Maccabiah Games in weighting but was edged out by Barry Senate (in the 220-pound class, I believe) at the Dave Burger Memorial Meet held at the McBurney YMCA in New York City. I lifted in that meet and went on to compete in Israel in July, winning gold in the 198-pound class. Barry lifted enough to win gold also, but was relegated to second place on a technicality (he let go of the bar before it landed back on the platform). Long time gone but the memories remain vivid.
@@markmiller9579 I'm honored by your response . I'm sure I read about you in S&H in that period. I started training in '68 and immediately acquired a passion for all aspects of weight training. You must have seen a lot , and trained / competed against great athletes. Gubner was a " specimen" , genetic strength . Sadly not quite the technical ability. Schemanski of course was an all time great , and legend.
Yuri Vlasov R.I.P. (1935-2021)

1:40 --- The Great Norbert Schemansky !!!
Юрий Петрович выиграл у Норберта Шемански.
Молодец Власов!
Yuri the great!
Командные итоги: СССР, Венгрия, Великобритания.
Русская мощь!!!!
Где звук????
Is the big guy with glasses Yuri Vlasov from the CCCP or is it Norb Shemanski ?
They both wear glasses, Schemansky is doing a snatch at 1:08, Yuri Vlasov is at 1:22, you can kind of see CCCP on his shirt beneath his jacket.

Interesting, two of the top lifters wearing glasses while they lift. You don't see that ever any more. Everyone has gone to contacts I guess.
Габнер (США)-3место.
