The best way to get that skill is to practice. In another interview Tyler said to write lyrics, no matter how dramatic or emotional. You can't get better without practice, so practice! Just listen to no phun intended, even the greats started somewhere. I believe in you!

So, before inspiration strikes you have to work hard. You have to make sure that when you're doing writing exercises or when you're forcing yourself to work on a certain production element, or get better at an instrument, or... There's a lot of things that aren't necessarily fueled by inspiration that you have to work on, so that you have the skill when it happens. So, a lot of times... I always talk about... song writing is kind of like being a muscle, that you have to work out, that you have to get stronger, have to tear down and build back up. And, so it's not... I'm not walking around all day long inspired. You know, there's times where you have to do what you don't feel like doing. And when... Even though I don't feel like writing songs, it's what I love to do, right, so... Those things can be disconnected sometimes and that's okay. Yes that’s something I practice - looking at situations from multiple angles, from multiple perspectives, in order to gain control of it. It is the act of separation. When you can see that you are separate from a thing, it no longer devours you. You don’t say “I am depressed”. You say, “depression is happening, and I’m still just me, no matter what I’m Feeling.” When you can call out anxiety for what it is, medically, suddenly the situation that had you triggered no longer upsets you, and then you just wait while your physical symptoms subside. The hard part is remembering to do this.

JD here .....timeless interview...I'm an old (54 this month), but proud to say that these guys have musically affected me for the good....my daughter, Arianna, got me more focused on these guys (always loved Tyler's rapping, but never got too deep listening to them) and am thankful that she did....I hope they keep making music til they're my current age (or longer).....I truly do think that they are a genuine inspiration to a vast array of humans (and banditos)....Arianna and I get to see them for a second time in Dallas later this summer and cannot wait, and also know that I'm that much closer to the end of that gig, which makes me a little sad at the same time.....I would love to take her up to see one of their hometown shows....I know that would be unreal....Peace to you guys and a good bit of freedom and distance from those anxieties that debilitate you the most..

In a way I feel what Josh talked about. Whenever I look at someone for for than 2 seconds..... I have the urge to immediately look down or someplace else. Especially in class when a faculty is teaching..... I look at them until they look at me. When that happens.... I try to look away in the most discreet way possible so they don't mistake me as me avoiding their lecture .
