A lot more. Keep in mind I'm off-grid, in Finland (your latitude). Drilling my well here was 4.5k Euro (40 meter deep well). Pump and controller was 1.5k Euro. I added an ion exchange filter for about 2k which includes the sediment pre-filter. Another 1k or so on pipes, fittings, etc. Hookup and installation (plumbing and electrical) I did myself. My kitchen came from IKEA, 6.5k Eur delivered, fully installed myself and includes a vent hood, gas range, dishwasher, etc. To prevent freezing pipes: insulation. The pipe from the well to the house are below the frost-line, and have insulation installed on top. I can drain all other water pipes when I'm not present. My sewer system (Fann Biobed 5CE WC+BDT) was about 6k Euro at the time I installed it 5 years ago, but prices are higher now (10k Euro). No permits outside the initial building permit.

Inflation sucks, nevertheless it seems Sweden is crazy expensive at least compared to where I live. In Romania with a bit less than you spent on this video I'm almost done renovating my grandma's old house, and that's including water, electricity, windows, doors, bathrooms, furniture, ceilings, floors, etc. I did a lot of the work myself so I saved a ton on labour but still, I think what you did for 28k would have cost here something like 5-8k max.

A lot to contemplate. However think about purchasing EVERYTHING all done.
I’m sure the total move in $$ would be a LOT more. And you have the satisfaction of having it done YOUR way.
And most by YOUR own hands. It’s a no brainer.
      Wonderful job so far. 🙀😁👌

Hi Kalle and Family. I watch your videos every night before I go to bed so I can sleep better knowing there are good people like you left on this planet. Ive been a fan for many years now and I cannot thank you enough for making the world a better place to live. I have an 8 acre off grid property in Grass Valley California. We have very mild winters and hot summers at 3000 ft elev. Im am surrounded by mountains and trees. I live a self sustainable lifestyle. I would move to Sweden but its just too cold for me at my age of 66. I just want to thank you for making my nights much brighter and joyful. What is amazing is how quickly the garden and ground has recovered from the extreme digging up process. Your life will hopefully now be much easier with your water supply and up to date kitchen. However, I love it that you are keeping your wood burning oven and hot plates for cooking and heating when necessary.

I think this is one of your Best videos Kalle. Very informative, with the info clearly presented. Excellent! I'm glad you put the pump house/room in an existing building, and that you saved both your sanity and valuable time by hiring carpenters to do the kitchen work. All the costs, while significant, seem reasonable to me compared to what work costs in the U.S. And the kitchen is so well designed and compatible w your cozy cabin. All's well that ends well -- I vividly remember when the artesian water source was discovered and all the flooding it caused. What a freaky time that was. WELL DONE!

You're still doing well. My house is off-grid. My father and I cleared the half acre of forest by hand with chainsaws and wheelbarrows. It took seven years to build at a cost of 250k Canadian dollars (1.9 million Krona), which seems like a lot, but I have no utility bills so my expenses are pretty much just the mortgage and food. It's also quite a large house with built in greenhouses, so I save on food as well. We didn't dig a well though, all my water is caught on the roof and stored in cisterns below ground where it is filtered and pumped through the house. If I were to dig a well here it would cost upwards of 40k Canadian (300k Krona) and the water would not be as good as I would have to filter out the ground contaminants. Your spring water quality looks amazing, no amount of money can buy that kind of good fortune. Congrats on project well completed.

    Remodels are expensive--even DIY.
Regarding the well, it seems like you got a pretty good deal. They certainly didn't overcharge, especially considering a) how remote you are, and b) how much infrastructure you ended up needing to manage the artesian well. Add to that, what an amazing job they did cleaning up your site and not leaving a huge mess that would cost even more to correct... I think you found a good company with good professionals who took pride in their job. This doesn't even consider the improvement to your quality of life. It's a win win win! Money WELL spent.

I'm sheduled to get a well drilled on my property sometime at the end of this month *hopefully* and just getting it drilled, capped, and sealed I'm preparing myself for a $20,000 - 30,000 bill. The drilling will be $70 per foot plus $3,200 for the cap, seal and county fees wells in my area seem to range from 200 - 400ft deep. To get a pump set up I've been told will run another $12,000 but I will also need to get electric run which will also be another $10,000. So all your expenses sound amazing to me.

We live in Eastern NC and sit on an Aquifer and the quote for a new well I got was $34000.
Regarding the heating cable for the water line. I would keep it plugged in between the first and last frost. We have the same type of cable for our water heater that is actually mounted on the outside of our house. We also live in a much more temperate climate, but still need this during winter, and keep it plugged in between first and last frost.
We bought our house on .26 acres for $25000 in 1999. Bought 1.54 adjoining acres in 2008 for $7500 and then gutted the house, added a garage, an addition to the kitchen, enlarged 2 bedrooms by doing away with a hallway, replaced the old roof with a metal roof and completely redid one of the bathrooms and that, in 2008, cost $120000. We did most of the work ourselves, but had to hire out the roof, kitchen, and garage builds. Now, prices have tripled. It is insane to think about.

Having just bought a house in Sweden and just starting to renovate I really appreciate you sharing this in such detail! Thank you so much, this is a huge help in better estimating where it makes sense to hire someone and where to do things myself.
Hearing the total cost I am very glad I decided to buy a house with water, thermal heating and a kitchen for 600 000 sek.
I would maybe get one of those little induction stoves from Ikea that you just plug in, that way you can cook inside when it is hot in the summer and otherwise it can be tucked away in a drawer. They are cheap and add some nice convienience.
I always enjoy your videos, thank you for making them.

Good decision the woodstove, it will even heat at the same time and the crackling fire is so homely feeling. Perfect job, congratulations...do not worry anylonger, enjoy it.... use them in good health.

Annars hade jag fått hämta vatten på macken och sedan värma på spisen och det hade blivit lite väl kämpigt tyckte jag. Skulle ha varit intressant att se Kristines reaktion när hon insåg att ni hade varmvatten. 🙂

I understand paying for the comfort of not having to do something ourselves. But I've built a few fully furnished IKEA kitchens, and I will never understand paying someone to do that, especially that kind of money. Electricity, yes, pay someone, you need that just for insurance purposes. Plumbing, depends on if you need to add copper pipes or if you can do PVC yourself. But if you have time, are a little bit handy and curious, build your kitchen furnitures yourself. Invest the money somewhere else.

Shouldn't the heating cable be plugged in BEFORE the water freezes? Once it is frozen, I'd be afraid the pipes might crack.

What is happening to the water in the pond, is it leaking somewhere out ? I’m questioning if the water could overflow and flood the whole area 🤔

When I had to update a 40 year old house northwest of Chicago by some 80 miles (my childhood home), on 1.3 acres, it was $180K USD. I was stunned. The stuff that had been deferred was way more than I'd imagined, but what could I do ? Roof, flooring, countertops, getting things up to code (vents, gas lines, etc), replacing damaged siding glass doors (each 12 feet), and all windows to energy efficient, and SO much more. When I moved, I didn't make a dime. Your cabin is so much ore cozy, and you have incredible land- it's been fun watching you do the things you want to do for you and your family, in a beautiful area.

First of all, nicely done! You have accomplished so much with excellent results! I wish it weren’t so, but home renovations are expensive. They are among the most expensive bills we will ever pay! But they usually last a long time. And living through renovations can be hell . I cringe every time I even think of upgrading anything on my home because I have lived through so many projects. It’s all the disruption that bothers me the most!

Your smart to keep the wood burning stove, not only does it make you more self reliant, but provides additional ambient heat. All your lacking now is an indoor accessible bathroom. Pretty sure you’ll need a permit for that and another $20,000.

  • @robadr13

Costs are hard to estimate, but it seemed reasonable overall compared to what I’d expect in Canada. Considering all that went wrong with the well, US$11000 (C$14500) seemed a good deal.
The cooktop? I predict that in a few months you’ll get a cheap induction element that just plugs into a wall outlet, and start using it every day! 😂😂
Beautiful site, beautiful cabin, beautiful kitchen! Cheers!

I understand you're in a different country and prices vary. I live in the US. For your property which is basically 5 acres with the buildings and all on it would cost hundreds of thousands of dollars here. If you decided to sell it, would you be able to get your investment back .I would love to have your place. I think what you've done to it is awesome and it's very beautiful. Best wishes to you and your family ❤

Total cost in the US would have been closer to 100k or even more because of labor costs. In fact, you paid very little for the amount of work that was done! Ur just not used to big numbers. No need to know tbe complete total.. Just live and enjoy!

Where i live you won't find even 5 acres of raw land for that price. I would say that what you paid for your property and land and everything on it plus the upgrades is worth every penny. That is pretty affordable considering other places in the world.

What I don't understand is why make the pump house so deep... the width is good but the depth could have been half the size, no?
Buy the way, did you find a solution for the algae growing in your pond? Did you have to add grass seed to help the grass growing back?
The only point I think is missing in the kitchen is a small countertop beside your stove... you have a tiny tiny space to put some plates, spices, etc... sure you have big countertop behind you but, when I cook I like to have some space around free to place like a plate with my veggies ready to be cook, a plate with the meat, lets say some milk to add, some butter to add, spices, etc... could be just under the window.... like 30 cm deep and 100 cm long.
Thank you for sharing this... very useful for young people that wants to emulate you! I am eager to see the whole family back into your cabin and how you manage your new environment on a daily basis. Enjoy your achievement! 🙏👌💖
