I certainly would like to know why sharks hate yellow.
SpongeBob. Drives them nuts.
Perhaps it has something to do with all the shark fin soup they consume? 😂
Yellow fin tuna?
Homer Simpson
Yellow equals food source as there are many yellow fish in the sea, and they may think they're tastier.
That surfer has to be the first person in history to be happy to be attacked by a shark. How many people can say they've been saved from a great white by another great white
There's always a clumsier fish.
@@WaterShowsProdThat’s a deep cut, man…😁😁😁
The double White Shark attack is so crazy! If that was in a movie it'd be dismissed as stupid & not believable! The footage of the Tiger hitting that kayak is pretty horrifying too. Shark came in fast & hit hard. Great vid. Your channel + Hal @ Sharks Happen are my two favorites for shark info.👍
Id imagine he pooped his pants 👖
I have had sharks bump/ram the boat many times pulling a fish in, or come up on the reef/close to the beach to try and get the fish. or take a fish off the spear, every time they were after the fish not the boat or me.
Hal @ Sharks Happen is not a reliable source of information.
They call this guy a scientist and yet. He REALLY believes 2 different sharks mistook his identity lmao. It couldn't be that sharks are predators and they saw prey... NO! Sharks are friends! I'd not look to this guy for common sense.
Me too!
A video on sharks the color yellow would be really interesting. We were on the Maldives a couple of weeks ago and saw many snorklers with yellow fins. But the black tip and white tip reef sharks didn't seem to notice.
It's a myth that they hate yellow. Sharks are actually color blind. White and yellow are simply the most visible at depth. Red, blue, green, all turn gray when you get about 10-15ft deep, but white and yellow are still visible when deep. I spearfish in FL and it's common knowledge.
😂😂😂@@whatsgood001
Please do a video about why shark are aggressive torwards yellow! I would really like to know.
Also, when I was younger, I remember some divers wearing some sort of chain suit to protect themselves from bites. Were these ineffective? Not worth the hassle? Worst then not wearing them? Why don't we see these anymore?
For casual diving, they'd increase your weight and probably cause you to exert more energy while diving. AFAIk, they're still a thing, though I thik they're only used for like, shark dives.
yeah
@@coldravioli7839 Also the chainmail is IIRC really only sueful against medium sized sharks not the "big ones" that are typically seen as "man eaters"
Seconding this! I'd never heard about sharks reacting to the color yellow
The U.S. Navy did extensive testing on coloured life jackets in the 1960's, they discovered that sharks "love" to bite anything yellow, so much so that the navy describe it as "Yummy Yellow". @@siha_soul
Number one! The white tip is showing something that I've seen before. Even though there are a number of divers in the water, he clearly had singled out one of them!
I swear I once watched a documentary where a scientist said sharks prefer swimmers in “yum yum yellow.”
I watched an interesting documentary the other day where scientists looked into the "yum yum yellow" colour theory. They discussed that while sharks can't actually see the colour yellow itself, it does show up in such high contrast for them, so any object that's yellow really sticks out enough for them to see. It's such an interesting topic that I'd love to watch you discuss the topic.
Topic, topic
Of course we need a video about the color yellow!! 😂😂 Something I never thought I'd say in relation to sharks 😂✨🦈(Suddenly, the fact that my yellow fins broke seems like quite a good thing)😂😅
Yes, since hi-vis is yellow I think there's a Public Safety benefit.
Another great video as always Kris. Tracking Sharks did a short of the tiger shark ramming the kayak and a 59 second video on the kid getting his hand bitten in the everglades. The shark in the everglades video looks like a lemon shark. It doesn't have the bulkiness of a bull shark. That does look like a spear gun or a spear pole on the bottom of the last clip. I remember Shannon saying the shark on the right missed him because the shark on the left got to him first. I think an episode on how sharks react to the color yellow would be very interesting. In an episode of Sharks Happen, Hal mentions experiments the navy did to see how sharks reacted to different colors, and of all the colors, the sharks reacted to yellow the most. So much so, they started calling it yum yum yellow. That'd be super cool to hear more about. 🦈🦈🦈🦈🦈
The Everglades one was so scary just because I’ve never seen an attack like that like so quick, like dude, literally couldn’t reach his hand in the water for one second…. that just makes me think that they must be everywhere in there, snakes, sharks, and gators. I still remember the Everglades in the 90s, never a place you would wanna get in the water, but the Everglades have become a lot more dangerous over the years…. I remember when giant snakes in the Everglades used to not even be a thing.
They definitely aren't everywhere, otherwise it'd happen every time someone puts their hands in the water. It's just bad lucky he was in the exact wrong place at the exact wrong time.
they are fishing then he decides to go and splash his hands in the water next to the boat, very similar to the splashes fish make as you bring them to the side of the boat. Fishing draws in sharks.
the giant constrictor snakes were not a thing because they never use to be there, they are an invasive species escaped exotic pets.
@@MusMasi I know that, I was making my comment as if everyone already knew that
While you might not expect to happen on a bull shark in The Everglades, you have a very good chance of finding an alligator there, so his friend was right about not sticking your hands in that water.
I know the answer to that one! For the same reason that my cat attacks my feet in bed or a dog runs after a bike. It is because "why not". They are curious animals. It doesn't always have to be about mistaken identity, imo. Oh yes, my cat very well knows it's my feet in there, and not an fat mouse.
I’ll stick with the shark researchers take, thank you
@@MegaLaban12345 the mistaken identity theory is just that, a working theory. Or, I suppose it's still a hypothesis, I don't know. Many researchers aren't fully convinced in scientific circles.
Would love a video on why sharks don't like yellow! Also, it would be really cool if you could do a video on the cave of the sleeping sharks in Mexico. I first read about it yesterday and from what I've read so far it seems that people still don't really know why the sharks come/came there (apparently it's very rare nowadays) and lay still on the bottom, and how they're doing it (at least those obligate ram ventilators like (I think) bull sharks (?)). I think it would be an interesting video because it would be a cool mix of a bit of history and some fascinating shark behaviours, like the video about the USS Indianapolis incident.
It's a myth that they hate yellow. Sharks are actually color blind. White and yellow are simply the most visible at depth. Red, blue, green, all turn gray when you get about 10-15ft deep, but white and yellow are still visible when deep. I spearfish in FL and it's common knowledge.
Do you think this guy knows the answers …. It’s mostly all speculation
I wonder if the two sharks that attacked Shannon were spooked by crashing into each other and if that's why no follow-up attack took place. As for the Everglades attack as others have mentioned it seems that was a Lemon shark not a Bull shark. Agnostic display or not the four species covered in this episode are the ones that us divers are taught to be most wary of.
I feel a bit bad for giggling with the guy that was washing his hands in the water, but the timing of that conversation. Clearly that shark was a paid actor LMAO
I didn't know about the sharks not liking yellow thing. I love learning new things about sharks, as they are my favourite animal, and my favourite way to learn those things is through here! So personally I would love to see a video talking about that, that's pretty interesting actually. Wonder what the reason for that is.
I giggled so much my 5 year old asked me what was so funny. 😂
I would love a video on the color yellow! My Dad was a fisherman and I don't know how many times he washed his hands in the water. Thankfully, nothing ever happened. The kayak and tiger shark scared me the most just because I'm terrified of kayaks on the ocean. I see a kayak as a float more than a craft.
kayaks are great, though I use outrigger canoes as my small craft of choice for fishing especially deep sea, landed some big fish from outriggers, including billfish.
You’re gonna need a bigger boat. 😂
@@cassiusdio6048 - well played!
Very good video. I used to fish at night and witnessed some interesting things with sharks eating seabirds, chasing seals etc. I decided to always stay in the boat thank you.😅
The fishing thing. I've been fishing my whole life on lakes and rivers in Eastern Canada. I can't tell you how many times i've washed my hands in the water on a boat. Don't have sharks here and it shows, i'm not sure I wouldn't wash my hands in the murky water just by force of habit, but I can tell you, when that clip went viral, it was shared pretty quickly on our group chat and how we should really think about that if we were going on a fishing trip elsewhere in the world !
Been a bad year for shark attacks here in South Australia, 3 attacks and 2 fatal
It’s sad but that’s the risk you take when you enter their territory
I'm looking to buy a small fishing boat, and my wife suggested a fishing kayak. Yes, you can guess which clip was "Exhibit A" in why that won't be happening. I don't care that I'll only be fishing off Angelsey..😂😂😂
We have blues and makos in our waters, so definitely stay away from kayaks.
you need to know your craft and the waters around you.
Back in the late 60's, early 70's it was determined that shark attacks on swimmers has something in common. They learned that the swimmers attacked all had what was termed "Burnt Orange" and "Yum Yum Yellow" bathing suits on. The Kayak is basically "Yum Yum Yellow" in color and it looked like he just pulled in a few a few minutes earlier and his feet were dangling over the edges. The combination likely made him look like a prey item with the right movement and coloration to be an injured fish on the surface. The shark hit is once and left once it realized that it wasn't prey.
I’ll stick with the shark researchers interpretation, thank you.
It's a myth that they hate yellow. Sharks are actually color blind. White and yellow are simply the most visible at depth. Red, blue, green, all turn gray when you get about 10-15ft deep, but white and yellow are still visible when deep. I spearfish in FL and it's common knowledge.
@@southpaw8040 It's not that they hate the color, it looks like a prey item to them in the water because it's visible at depth. Why do you think there are so many Chartreuse colored lures used in fishing? It's not just sharks and it's a proven fact. It looks like the flash of scales in the water which attracts their attention and when it's sitting on the surface and bobbing around it looks like a dead critter floating. Also point in fact in many cases a shark attack is a single bite to determine whether or not it's a food source or not. Once they make that initial bite, they know whether it's food or not. It might have been a different story of the shark bit his leg and he started bleeding into the water even though he was up on the kayak.
Hi Kris, another great video from you. According to the U.S. Navy, who did extensive testing with coloured bouyancy vests in the 60's, sharks "love" the colour yellow, so much so that the Navy describe it as "Yummy Yellow", due to the abundance of bites that the yellow vests received from sharks.
I wonder if its also the color of the underside of some sea turtles, its a lighter, tan/yellow/brown color, sometimes turtles rest on the surface, so something floating like that could appear like a opportunity to a tiger shark, I am refering to the kayak attack.
Yum yum yellow! They were trying out personal safety envelope things - like giant lemons - that could be deployed if someone went overboard in shark country, from what I recall. IIRC, they thought yellow would be optically invisible? Or wouldn't look like a seal? But they expected yellow to be safe, and it turned out to be the worst.
It's a myth that they hate yellow. Sharks are actually color blind. White and yellow are simply the most visible at depth. Red, blue, green, all turn gray when you get about 10-15ft deep, but white and yellow are still visible when deep. I spearfish in FL and it's common knowledge.
Also the term yum yum yellow is from The show Mythbusyers, not the Navy.
@@southpaw8040yum yum yellow originally came from us naval fliers in ww2 in the pacific.due to their lifevests
@@southpaw8040- "yum yum yellow" is something I read as a kid, and although I've heard of Mythbusters, I don't think I've ever seen it.
I assumed that yellow would just stand out in the water. It would be like waving a red flag in front of a bull: nothing to do with the color, just with the contrast and being very annoying...
Yes on the yellow trigger for sharks.

So that white tip one you opened with. There was an investigation on it, there had been 13 shark attacks in that reason since 2009. And they actually did close the reef to diving and swimming because a fishery had been dumping their excess into the water. The left overs of the fish they had been throwing into the water, so there had been a slowly increasing number of white tips.
Would love to see a video regarding why sharks and why they seem to not like the colour yellow.
Thank you for the wonderful information you give us in regards to
Shark behaviour!
It gives ppl a bit more of a positive note towards sharks and that they’re not these monster man eating killers that they’ve been portrayed to be, but just like any other species looking for food territory, and or mating in their own home
I've been so hype for the new season of Shark Bytes!!
Your thoughts on the recently uploaded "Malibu Artists" video? For me it's obvious the GWS was after the fish the guys had caught. Fantastic content
Shark attacks are rare for one reason only no one on earth lives underwater. I know that's a lot to take in
Yes, please talk about sharks vs. yellow! The Everglades one is pretty damn funny. "What's the worst that can happen?" I can't imagine why you'd put your hands in the Everglades for an instant. I lived in a houseboat on the St. Johns for a while, and I'd be terrified of being bit by a gator, let alone a shark!
At 11:24 we can see the freediver buddy that has something on his right hand, looks quite the same object on the bottom of the sea. Most likely they were spearfishing
Yeah if you watch the lower diver right before the shark goes for the other diver you can also see him expecting an attack and preparing. Both these freedivers seemed to me like they were very experienced in these particular waters as they didn't panic when the shark made it's charge and were just as calm afterwards too.
I love your casts! Thanks for the high-end content bru.
From JoJo (who’s now 6!): I love your videos! I totally want you to do more Shark Bytes… please!
I saw a video where a marine biologist analyzed the guy getting bit in the hand , she said that it was a lemon shark.
Back in the 70's divers would refer to yellow as "yum yum yellow" just in general. I don't think there was anything but anecdotal evidence back then that it attracted sharks, but it was noted by those that spent a lot of time on the water.
Why sharks hate yellow! Really curious about that now. Also, in the last attack the diver at the bottom of the screen appears to have a spear gun. So I'm thinking that is definitely a spear gun on the bottom. Last thing I would have dropped. As you said earlier, try to have something in your hand to keep between you & the shark. A spear gun extends your arm by its length to keep the shark even further away!
A video about Yum Yum Yellow and why surf/ dive companies make stuff in this colour would be pretty cool.
Anyone trying to show off in the comments by signaling they know about sharks and the color yellow needs to reevaluate their view of themselves.
@@MegaLaban12345 Not really sure what the issue us? I grew up on the beach and we all refereed to the colour as Yum Yum Yellow. I am only suggesting a topic for a video.

The color sharks are attracted to a lot is Yellow. They call it yummy yellow. Not sure why they like it. Or don’t like it like i just heard you say. Ya i think that’s fascinating. What in the ocean is yellow and why would a shark like or dislike that color? Would love to see a video on this. I remember a study that showed burnt orange the absolute worst color for shark attacks
Yum yum yellow is for real?
In regards to the tiger shark, when I first saw that clip I assumed the shark thought that the translucent yellow paddle was the target. To a shark I would think that it looks a lot like a fish hiding near or under the kayak for cover.

Would definitely be interested in the colour yellow & sharks!
How much research has been done into the nature shark’s ability to discern between colors? I was under the impression they mostly saw contrast.
*KRISTIAN*
I have seen programmes for a while now, where researchers have studied how sharks avoid sea snakes with black and white stripes, and even made the stripes proportionally bigger and made wet suits etc, to see if sharks stayed clear.
Have they tried painting the undersides of surf boards in b & w stripes to see if sharks are less likely to do mistaken prey attacks, as it seems that most surf board attacks are this type, or has this not been tried ?
Yes please to the yellow video! Thanks for this one :)
The yum yum yellow theory has been disproven. Mythbusters did that, I think. It's only color contrast, not the specific color that attracts them.
I had no idea they don't like yellow. I'd like to see a video about it. If anything it seems important to spread that information.
I would most definitely be interested in what effects the color yellow has on sharks and why they hate it so much.

Hals saying from 'Sharks happen'! This channel & sharks happen r my 2 favorites!

It's a stupid and inaccurate catchphrase, that isn't even catchy.
The young 15 year old surfer one .. the same animation and story has been told and apparently happened to that older surfer dude more recent when 2 sharks came at him, but he came out of that unscathed! “Yum Yum Yellow” 😂
Really enjoy your videos.
I'm gonna wait till I get home from Hawaii to watch this 😬
I’d love a video about sharks and yellow.
The Double Shark attack is interesting . Shannon has been buzzed by many sharks. Even when he goes diving, they harras him. Interestingly He has a bladder issue and urinates in the water on a regular basis. It is thought that is why the sharks are attracted to him.
We all wash our hands in the water in Florida. It is just something we do. The problem in Florida is that the bull shark population has exploded, especially in freshwater
Putting his hands in the water.. you're washing your hands.
I was raised doing that and still do it all the time. Tennessee, North Carolina, Alaska, Alabama, Texas.. no problem.
No need to waste drinking water.
Sometimes I think the encounter may be caused by shear annoyance
I believe Shannon said he was peeing in the water , this may have initiated the attack from both sharks.
Just came to comment section to say this. That was the connection investigators made in the attack 4 yrs later. He had peed both times, so they think the sharks just followed the scent trail.
Survive a double pronged Great White attack !
Odds on that ? Without the odds of one bumping the other, causing a release :)
When you watch that Yellow Kayak vid with the sound up, matey shouts out "Tiger shark" instantly !

In the first video, the guy being approached by the shark is wearing chainmail sleeves. I'm wondering if he did something to encourage the shark, feeling safe because he had extra protection. The other diver didn't have armor, but the shark ignored him.
Bro come on you know what that oceanic white tip wanted in the beginning. Those are well documented to eat humans at sea. 150 or more sailors eaten by them during the sinking of the USS Indianapolis.
I'm no shark expert, but I think the guy in the Everglades was bitten by a lemon shark, not a bull shark, from the looks of it. The shark appears frightened by the size of its "prey" and runs away. I believe a bull shark would be a bit more persistent and not as scared. Also, please do a video about the color yellow, I have never heard of this thing before.
I agree with lemon shark, it's lanky instead of being stocky, also the dorsal fin is so far back. In the clip that followed Florida man the dorsal fin on the bull is so much closer to the snout.
I've definitely swished my hands around in the water to clean them but only ever in clear water lol
same but never from the side of a stationary boat that we are fishing from.
Dangerous game in those murky Everglades. I’d have been more spooked by the gators, they are pure stealth.
@@SHARKBYTES oh yeah, I'd never do that in gator water lol
Regarding the bull shark at the end, the other diver appears to be holding a spear gun, so it probably is one on the sea floor that's been dropped by the diver of interest
