  • To date, this is the largest stump removal Bulldog Tractor has performed using a John Deere 2038R compact utility tractor (or 2032R or any 20 - 40hp CUT). Large Ash Tree stump that required removal so we can install a level, smooth lawn for our client. The conventional approach would be to use a medium sized backhoe or excavator. Unfortunately we do not have one and must work with the tools we have to get the job done for our client! This is a debacle with a surprise or 2 waiting under the ground. Will we win or lose, stick around to find out!

This season appears to have been a blessing with numerous stump removals and that ash was Goliath!

2023 sure didn’t go in my planned direction. I’m just going with the flow and trying not to push against the current. I don’t think the last curve ball has been thrown yet! Cheers from the Bulldog 🍻

Have you considered a tooth bar or stump bucket for jobs like these? Looked like the bucket handled it pretty well, but I worry about my lift arms getting twisted using the corner of the bucket. My tractor is a bit smaller so maybe that plays a role in my thoughts.

Back a couple videos I have a toothbar video. Different situation, different tooling (attachment). Toothbar’s are great at their intended purpose. I don’t know if it would help in this situation, as the welded-on cutting edge seems more appropriate to cut the roots? I have a stump bucket, that is another tool that is good for its intended purpose. That being any stump smaller than, say 6” minus. Over 8” and stumps seem to hit super strength status. Well, in my experience anyway. Cheers from the Bulldog 🍻

Great video…nicely done! What brand stump grinder is that and what size is your tractor?

Stump grinder manufacturer is called “Quick Attach” manufactured right here in Minnesota! This is their Quick-Stump Away, 3 point stump grinder. The tractor is a 2 series John Deere with 38hp. The combination works well for stump grinding. It’s the stump removal that can get tricky!! Client directive was to flatten out the yard. Hence the Removal rather than Grind.

What was the reason for grinding the stump if you were just going to eventually dig it up?

With bigger equipment, grinding would probably not be necessary. Not saying grinding was the only way, but I felt it would help shrink the stump to a size my little tractor could deal with.
