They're actually in the chapel itself. They speak in hushed tones so as to not disturb the other onlookers there also.

As if the man wasn’t busy enough, then the pope after setting him a monumental task in sculpting his narcissistic tomb he says oh btw I want my ceiling painted too!!! The man was a complete genius, my favourite artist ever

Beth and Steven have a kind of artsy symbiosis that's really quite appealing. The way in which the two play off each other, offering insight and often times little known knowledge about the piece in question. I learn something new with each video I watch.
Thank you for that! It's what keeps me coming back again and again.
I have to say, as an audio engineer, recording the commentary on location, is a brilliant touch. The hushed tones of comments, the reverberation of the space itself with the background sounds of other patrons. With my headphones on, it gives one a real sense of being there. The first time I watch a video from this channel with headphones on, gave me a whole new appreciation for the quality of the production.
Thanks to all involved in the production of these videos.
And especially to Steven and Beth, for keeping it so interesting. Bravo all!

Thanks so much for reaching out. And thank you for your thoughtful comments about recording on site. It has its challenges but we think, for the reasons you noted, that it's worth the effort and helps bring listeners into the churches and museums and archaeological sites we visit. It also helps us, as we can respond directly to the work of art.

The dynamic and style of this naration sounds like I am watching the olympics of figure skating, complete with a discussion of the competitors personal life challenges. (while whispering in a library)
I expect to hear Bob Costas follow up. :)
A different kind of video presentation. I've only been out of the USA to Canada, and to Italy, and Moses was visited on that fantastic vacation in that wonderful country. Sooo much history there. And each of the cities visited was a different world with unique qualities!

I can't ever decide if The Pieta or Moses is my favorite, but every time I see them I am completely captured by the emotion of the pieces. They speak volumes, even after 500 years and yet still, no one knows exactly what they're saying.

In 1964 the Pieta was loaned to the New York World’s fair. I was a little kid, but even I knew it was a big deal. It was on a rotating platform . What struck me, aside from the stunning beauty, was the marked greenish color-Dad explained to me that over time bacteria had grown on the surface.

I recently had to watch, "The Agany and Ecstasy" an amazing film about Michelangelo painting the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. The movie shows him wanting to continue his work on the tomb and paired with this video it's clear why that is.

Great coverage of this amazing tomb. Surprised that no mention was made of the change in position of the head of Moses as the original orientation was not as it is today - at least that is the description given in 1996 when I visited Rome.

2:45 I bet Michelangelo purposefully avoided sculpting people he disliked or felt that weren't worthy enough due to their personalities and believes/morals.

The magnitude of this is staggering. I can't imagine making a little doll-sized figure, much less 47 figures of this scale with such incredible detail. And look at Julius presuming that God's angels would exert themselves in carrying his throne - fresh!
I also found it interesting that Jacob's wives surround Moses - why is that?
It was nice to hear the explanation of the horns this time.

Smarthistory. art, history, conversation. I agree, especially when in churches where the architect and artist are the same person, like in Santa Maria Della Vittoria's Cornaro chapel with Bernini - they were designed to be an immersive experience, so 360 video would be great!

These features are based on convention, that is, it follows the traditions of its time and location (Italy in the renaissance). Art is often much more a mirror of the culture that produced it, than the subject it depicts.

So were goin with horns huh? Alright.. I mean, it's not like anyone is ever gonna ya know sculpt a huge statue of Moses with horns." That's why we have a sculpture of Moses with horns. I was thinking, how could anyone mistranslate “rays of light” for horns. I have read several times that Michaelangelo loved to sculpt and was distraught about painting. From the depth of beauty of his paintings, I would never have guessed that. I’m thinking the horns may have been a way for him to vent. Pure speculation on my part.

    • @alanalan2732
      @alanalan2732 2 роки тому +1

@@suzanh7777 arises from an error by Girolamo, who translated the Bible from Hebrew into Latin in the fifth century. The author, during the translation, confused the word "keren", which in Greek means horn, with "karan" which means ray of light.
Girolamo in relation to the Exodus writes: "His face (of Moses) became horned (keren)", instead of "his face became luminous (karan)".
