- People still play board games? There's other tabletop board games aside from Monopoly? What even is a card sleeve? Where do you even find all these board games to play for game night? Board game hobbyists can sometimes forget what it's like for players who aren't aware of the hobby, who may have never seen board games with so many pieces and complicated words on how to play with just so much to read!
The non board gamer might equate board games to kids toy games and never realize the price of board games and limited edition kickstarter exclusives. Any hobby has its collectibles and exclusives after all, and who would've guessed that some out of print cardboard and components could be so expensive? Probably why the non board gamer might end up getting cheeto dust on their fingers and rubbing them all over your cards.

I hate when people say they will learn as they play, then complain about not knowing all of the rules
I actually do prefer to learn as I go, but I don't get annoyed if something comes up later, because I understand that is going to happen and I don't care if I win the first time I play something.
I know the video makes fun of it, but having a 30 min rule presentation before we start is basically useless for me, I have do stuff to get it in my brain.
Yes my god, every time I try to teach my parents a game it happens.

@@jknifgijdfui If the group i am playing with is good i am sure there are plenty of better games than CAH that will further enhance the time spent. CAH is just 1 time novelty game that honestly gets tiring with incredibly edgy jokes. Perhaps i just don't enjoy circle jerking games. To each his own i suppose!
They're all perfectly good games. I mean, I'd rather stare at a wall than play werewolf, but that's just my taste.

My worst nightmare. That and things that smell like pickle juice, ketchup, ranch, etc.
I got an idea, do one about a super competitive player who doesn't understand how to play co-op board games.
"What do you mean if you lose we all lose? If you lose I should win!"
"A team based game? Ok I'll be on a team by myself then."
Wow you met that kind of player? All super competitive player that I know would just not play coop games.

That is why it is important to have simple gateway games that play quickly as a litmus test if a new player will be invited back to the next session.
My friend was like "this on mars looks pretty cool!" and i immediately said "NO! You aint ready for that!"

I picked up board games as a hobby 2 years ago. Oh boy was everyone surprised when I took the sleeved cards out for a game haha! I think "Is it laminated?" is a mandatory question to ask!

Haha... oh, that reminds me of trying to play "Deception: Murder in Hong Kong" with people who simply could not understand the most basic concepts.
I sat everyone down, explained the various cards, and held each of them up as I did so. I then shuffled them and handed them out. Then someone looked at their card and asked "Wait... my card has someone holding a bloody knife. Does that mean I'm the Murderer?"
I also played an *entire* 3 hour game of "Dead of Winter" with someone who didn't understand that they were the Traitor because "Well, the card said 'Betrayal' on it. I thought it was supposed to say 'Traitor' if I was the Traitor."
Yes, this person spent 3 hours playing a game and looking down at that card, never realizing that *betraying* everyone meant that they were the Traitor.
Another genius couldn't understand why a valuable resource in "Catan" required more than 1 much more available one... or why he couldn't sell his stuff in "Chinatown" for 10x the amount that player would gain for *all* of their stuff for the rest of the game. No, he wasn't holding it to use himself. He *never* used it. He just wanted *all* the money and didn't understand trading.
Oily hands are a game connoisseur's worst nightmare🤣
When it got to the “learn as I go” part I lost it 😂. Just YESTERDAY I had this exact conversation teaching my parents Cubitos. Almost verbatim!
First of all I have to say that this is a phenomenal video, one that was able to collect all my gaming nightmares into just 6,5 minutes. Good job! It was painful all the way.
Also I just started to arrange a shelf of games just for this kind of person: games that are short, easy to learn/play, well-known, and also I DO NOT CARE DEEPLY for, so I do not feel offended when someone does these genuine and yet hurtfull things only a gamer can truly feel. I suggest everyone having this kind of mentality when buying games/building collection and pulling games out to play.
Pick your games for the group dynamic and not for your own momentary mood. Otherwise people get hurt. I still have flashbacks to the time when I showed Cosmic Encounter to one of my groups that did not have the right mood for it. It was a massacre of patience, benevolence and general human decency. Learn from my mistake and do not offer your DARLING games for people who cannot appreciate them because of their genuine disinterest.
ahaha thanks! Yep, I have my shelf carefully catered, and then when a non-board gamer points to a game a little bit too crazy, I quickly divert their attention to a lighter game to avoid these crazy scenarios as much as possible -Ashton

this hits too close too home. Too many times have I been invited over to play board games, bring something that I think is cool, only to be met with cards against humanity and jackbox games
Also, the ones who don't want all the rules and just want to "learn as they go" always come back later and say you didn't tell me that rule! LOL

If you do the sore loser/rager video : abstract games, games like Quacks with lots of chance but the person rage if losing, games with blocking like Vilainous. Teaching a game to your SO and then they manage to smash you 5 times in a row.

1:46-2:13 is basically word for word every time I play a game with my wife.
And I had someone bridge shuffle my cards once before I started sleeving all my games and it twisted my stomach into sailor's knot.

Card Sleeves are my best friends when it comes to warding off the spilled water, cheetohs, oily fingers, etc. omens.

one of my biggest pet peeves with casual players is that they'll gladfully spend 2 or 3 hrs playing exclusively CAH but the minute you suggest a game that is around 2 hours long by itself they immediately get turned off saying things like "that's too long" or "sounds too complicated" despite the fact that the length of a game does not determine how complicated the actual concept and gameplay is. for example the Gibson's civilization takes around 3 hours or more due to the victory conditions and being up to 7 players but most of the game runs itself and the victory conditions are mainly very clear cut. "be the first to reach the end of the victory tracker. achieve these certain objectives to keep progressing down the tracker". I've actually been told by some people the game feels too simple
a lot of it can be theme based, or just visual based. Like, when casual players see a bigger box, or just more things to look at, they curl up and just don't want to learn. Whereas CAH is just plain and simple gonna be throwing short cards at each other. Have had this struggle TOO many times, sometimes some simple social deduction or party game is the compromise (decrypto, hellapagos, resistance, coup, etc.) -Ashton

A stereo type I often see is the "if I'm not winning it isn't fun" types who will whine the entire time if they're not well in the lead and the "king makers" who if they're not winning they'll sabotage the game to make sure their special candidate wins so they feel that through their actions of creating a winner they still have a hand in winning. They're my personal least favorite type of gamers to play with as they ruin the spirit of the game
We'll find a way to work this in somewhere :) Just kind of like... the scummiest players to play with, so it'll be interesting to see what comes up during brainstorming -Ashton

Not to bash on games like Werewolf and Uno though, they can be fun with a party, but that's generally what people wanna play when they say: "I wanna play boardgames" in Vietnam. Werewolf and Uno is pretty much the whole definition of boardgames for us (for some reason).

Sometimes we do sound a little silly to "non board gamers" with our jargon, hahaha. There are some things we can do to make ourselves more accessible, but sometimes people just aren't that into board games (and das coo').

I don’t know why I do it to myself either. I study a lot for nursing school and on my breaks, I still have to use my brain for board games. I guess board gamers have obsessive personality (NO IT’S NOT OCD) and they can channel those tendencies in their plays.
I mean, it can be pretty hard to just turn off your brain sometimes, it's really good to have an outlet where you're actively thinking! But yeah, because board games are just time consuming to learn/play/research, it can bring out the obsessive/addictive nature in us :) -Ashton
