I said it in the video but I wanted to say once again that I'm deeply sorry for how this review series turned out. Even with this video, I questioned if I should even upload it or if it was too late and nobody would care, but ultimately decided that I owe it to you guys and myself to close out the series properly.
I can't make any promises about reviewing part 2 or reviewing anything in general right now, but at the very least definitely expect some kind of content about part 2 either here or more likely on the main channel. Same with novel stuff if I do decide to read next year.
Thanks again for everything, and I'll see you wherever I see you.

When I was reading this part of the novel I could tell that while the pacing felt slow they were focusing on introducing characters. I think the adaptation has struggled to match that and ended up feeling both rushed and slow in parts.

As a LN reader i would say in this season they are just introducing new characters so they can cook later, i say this because its not like in season 1 part 1 where the main character was teleported to god knows where and dont have a fast way to go back to the charachters in the village to continue developing them, Rudeus is here in sharia and he's getting married and that means he's settling down and will stay with these same characters to know them better and for the writer to develop them more.

    Novel reader here
I really like your review and a lot of the critique that you had mentioned is completely valid for the context of LN.
Basically the 3 volumes that the S2P1 had adapted are "all setup, no payoff" or at least very little payoff (Sylphy's reveal).
The way Mushoku Tensei's story is structured is that every other major story arc is a Slice of Life. And the School Arc is probably the only one any readers that I know had grievances towards.
Most of the friends that Rudeus meets at this point of the story stay in it for good all the way to the end. Cliff and Zanoba are probably the two best written male sidekicks in Japanese media that I had ever seen.
As for the adaptation. From what I had discussed in the past most people had been worried about this part as a sort of "test" on whether or not Mushoku Tensei is going to continue or flop. And the anime did the best it could in my opinion. The novel also was episodic in how it went about things, there wasn't really any chance to merge or split things to not make every episode about a singular topic/friend. The episode where Rudeus meets Nanahoshi in person for the first time is the best example of it. It's literally just 20 minutes of dialogue and info dump in a single room no less. There was nothing the anime adaptation could do about it. At least the info dump was interesting and explained enough things to make the viewers not drop it on the spot. And omitting or shortening it would only confuse more viewers in the future.
With no spoilers, all I'm going to say is that the next part and the eventual season 3 are the peak of the series, there's lots of stuff to look forward to, so don't let people get hung up on a single slightly less good cour.

I had alot of the same criticisms of S2P1. It was primarily the wedding party scene in Rudys house that gave me a strange feeling. It gathered all of these characters and gave a montage of them all interacting, drinking, and having fun, and all I could think was “what would these characters realistically talk to eachother about?” That made me realize I didnt really understand the characters because It just didnt give me enough to work with. I started the LN after that and it was a great decision because these LN’s do such a good job of fleshing out even minor characters.

"Mushoku Tensei was good but it could've been better" - Light Novel readers for the past few months now ever since it aired. It's so frustrating that it could reach greater heights if it's just adapted properly and directed as well as season 1.

I think the biggest problem is that this is a very slow plot, while the novel readers were complaining that the anime was rushing the plot too fast, a lot of anime onlies were complaining that the plot was too slow. If they already thought it was slow when they studio was whizzing through the story, then they would have been even angrier if the story went slower

I think that since the season was split into cours, the character development suffered from fans incapable of understanding these characters have way more time to interact with our prespective in the future. They were simply established here, there was no getting around it.

you are watching rudeus live his life. you meet people all the time that won't have a massive impact on the outcome of your life. Some of these characters don't majorly impact the plot of the story but all of them contribute to shaping rudeus to who he needs to be to evolve as an individual. trust the process. if you read the novel you will understand

I love this season I personally like it more than part 1 of season 1 but I feel like the adaptation has been a little bit lackluster sometimes and the pacing has been really mixed and that was kind of always going to be a problem because of the novel is paced super slowly around this time but I really wish they would have added the other characters pov and maybe some of the extra chapters so that made it would have flowed a lot better

Great video. As a LN enjoyer I'd recommend reading it up to the anime and making your own conclusions as to how they could have reworked episodes to better introduce and flesh out characters. But an easy cut from the anime would be Vol. 7 which is the stuff with counter arrow. The story line has very minor impacts on the overall story because it was added on later. So maybe cutting some more of that could have given the ED arc more room to breath. But at this point I think they are doing a decent job adapting the series.
I saw a few comments about using the OP to show more character growth. But i think that will only work to show everyone spending time together. Linia, Pursena, and badigadi only need scenes of them hanging out with everyone. Of which they do get a decent amout of and will get some more in cour 2. Zenoba and julie just need to keep working on figurines. Then Cliff and elinalise need to show how they are in love with each other. I think the anime did a good job showing all these things for now. A lot of cour 1 is establishing/reestablishing these characters because they will be showing what they are cable of in Cour 2.

My main problem with Mushoku Tensei LN is its pacing. The school arc pacing up until vol 12 is too slow and felt like chore to read. The pace picks up afterwards only to slow down again. Which is why I dropped it after vol 12 only to pick it up again and then drop it after vol 15. Its like you get a pretty good arc only to have to suffer through a 1-2 slow paced ones just for it to get good again.
The anime speeds things up and there is the art/animation and voice acting/sound which makes it pretty entertaining. Overall I think the anime is better than the LN.

Not sure why you thought this was a negative review? This was pretty on point and I agree with the character introduction episodes feeling a bit contrived in the anime. Where a novel needs to lay out the details explicitly with words, an anime can hide important details in the animation that you won't know are relevant until the right time. Whether this was a good decision or not depends on how the payoff later on down the line is received.
On the matter of reading the novels or staying anime only, you can split the difference and just read up to where the anime is and then pause until the next season comes out.

  • @MuYi-Shawn

A lot of content was indeed cut from the novel. Even though many people complain about this, honestly, you cannot remove any scene they choose to keep right now and change it to others. Unless they use another season to tell the school arc, there is no way to cover all the stuff in the novel. And I don't think this is a good idea, cause still many people hate school arc because it's slow so why not just quickly mention this part and then move to the climax arc. I think Bind has already done their best, if I were the director I couldn't find a better way to tell the story cause this novel is really, really not easy to anime since its structure is so different from the anime storyboard. Some chapters are too long for one episode and too short for two, and some are just too short for one episode but too long for half. I have a habit when I watching Mushokutense, which is before each episode comes out, I would imagine if I were the director, how I choose the content in the novel and how many stories I am going to tell, and I always struggle with how to organize that bunch of stuff together, it's so pity to cut out any of them form novel cause they all good and all important but the cruel thing is you have to choose.

They couldve just went S1 route and remove the op (as much as I love the op, its removal and that time used for developing characters wouldve been much better).
Examples - cliff elianese episode op couldve been used to develop Cliff and his days at uni, meeting zanoba, being inspired by him and respecting him, then being reminded of Rudy. Then being disdainful of Rudy then warming up to Rudy.
Next episode about Badigadi and his adventures and how he became student.

I mostly agree with you. There are so many things that cannot be skipped in the anime and also the director for the anime could have been better. Season 1 blow it out of the water with how much information they could cram into each episode.
Just like the other reply said, imagine season 1 Openings was just a repeating visual and you can see how jarring and out of place each episode could have been.
The two example scenes that could have been better: Ariel+ Sylphy's journey to the school and Badigadi intro. They could do a few more key pictures in their struggle. On the other hand, I don't understand why they didn't show everyone in the country was scared of Badigadi, it was a pretty thrilling scene in the LN.
I just hope that they don't fuck up the second cour.

@@nguyendi92 Agree. And just curious, do you think they can really anime this novel to the end? Honestly, I think the possibility is low. Just do a simple math calculation, if they using the same pace, 6 books for 1 season, they need to do 5 seasons with 25 episodes for each in total, which means more than 120 episodes. How many "LN to Anime projects" have finished over 120 episodes in history? Top 5: Saiunkoku Monogatari(78); SAO(96); Monogatari(100); Slayers(104); Maru-ma Series(117). You see, no one yet. can Mushokutense break the record? Well, my heart hopes so, but my mind is negative.

    • @nguyendi92

@@MuYi-Shawn I do think they can animate this novel. The boring part and most controversial part is already done, the more exciting part is yet to come. According to BIND studio, they are willing to animate all of it. That's why the story haven't been animated in 2012 unless they can commit into it.
Story wise, most other GOOD long running series actually got stale overtime. The authors usually just milk the setting and reintroduce problems that should have been solved ages ago, so people got bored and stop watching. I even drop AOT because the story got too much nonsenses just for shock factors.
In theory, MT should gain even MORE followers, as with long running series usually do, lead to more profit. Do you know Game of Thrones? The budget went up as people really love it. The story just got a nosedive at the end though. There is no reason to stop animating Mushoku Tensei. Especially MT author still have another story in his mind. I just hope they don't drop in Quality though,

2:15 I´m pretty sure the Ranoa Magic Academy is significantly bigger than Hogwarts. It has about 10 times the students at least. We never get an exact number for Hogwarts but by calculations of studens we know in Harry Potter´s year, there should be at best around 1000 in total while Ranoa has confimed over 10.000.
We just don´t get to see much of it^^`

Yea this part of season 1 was rushed to get to the turning point but also as a light novel reader i can say that all these characters will get arcs whith the main character where you will get a more intimate knowledge of them also the story feels so disconnect eight now because rudy doesnt feel like some things matter so there not in the story in the novel we get full chapters going into the minds of these other characters and how they see these less important parts and a very important part to them but ye the next half of season 2 will make this season feel more complete with more on the horizon

Honestly, the greatest problem with the anime is that it rushes through the source material. It would be much better if there would have been one arc fewer adapted in each cour. That way there could be time for everything, even for the bonus chapters.

  • @kaguya6900
    @kaguya6900 9 місяців тому

I'd say there are only three paths the writers of the series could have taken to tighten up this arc of the series. Adapt fewer novels. Cut entire chapters. Or cut down the Quagmire Rudeus story arc.
Since I am drooling with anticipation for the events of volume 12, I do NOT want them to adapt fewer novels. Season 1 adapted volumes 1-6 and I REALLY want season 2 to adapt 7-12 (which it looks like they are on track to do).
With cutting chapters, you get the problem of what chapters to cut. In the Academy arc, some characters are more important to the story than others, but the more you cut, the more it has a knock-on effect on the rest of the story. You have to write around the omissions, and that presents headaches for future seasons (assuming we get them).
Somewhat famously, the Quagmire Rudeus arc was completely omitted from the web novel, so the anime might have done that as well, but not explaining how Rudy found out about his ED? Cutting out the dragon, which becomes a huge part of Rudy's reputation? Not to mention that those are really the only action scenes in these twelve episodes.
I think the main problem is that Rifujin na Magonote writes a very tight story up until now. At this point, there aren't a lot of extraneous chapters that can end up on the cutting room floor. So all-in-all, I think the anime did the best it could while staying pretty much true to the source material.
I think it was too bad that it was rushed, but I'm hoping that the end of the second cour of season 2 makes up for it all.

This cour wasn't as good as it could be. The show would have benefitted massively from a minute of group bonding for the special class every other episode. Because I agree that they almost felt like one episode characters in its current iteration.
I think it's gonna have a lasting negative effect. For example, and this is a minor spoiler...
Rudy and Sylphie will host a party to celebrate their marriage and all the special class is invited since they're Rudy's friends. But we haven't really seen that friendship yet in the anime.
