  • PMDG 737 NGX - Descent Management and High Energy Approach Tutorial
    Ever wanted to know how Boeing 737-800 pilots deal with shortcuts and being held high by ATC during Descent and Approach? This tutorial will be just for you!
    Join me in the initial phase of the descent into Alicante (LEAL/ALC) as we follow my operators’ procedures to deal with being held high.
    This Approach includes the exact same shortcut you might expect in real life (I’ve flown this approach more times than I’ve had hot dinners!) which leads to being very high on profile. VNAV tells you DES PATH UNACHIEVABLE? I don’t think so!
    Watch me as I apply useful techniques and guidance to ensure you’re fully stabilised safely before turning final.
    As I always stress my tutorials contain just one way of operating this brilliant aircraft based on what I teach during Type Ratings. Other operators and tutorials might show you a different procedure or setup!
    Any questions feel free to ask!
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    All guidance in my tutorials are based on operating procedures from a real operator, I have almost 4000 hours on the 737-800 (The real one) and I'm also a full-time Instructor working in a full motion Level D simulator.
    The aim of this channel is to provide realistic, informative and useful information to help you enhance your flight simulation experience by following me apply real world operating procedures in the PMDG NGX.

    That was wonderful. Never stop making these videos. Even if you run out of big dramatic ideas for videos I could watch you demonstrate the most innocuous professional details and it'd still be engrossing.
    You're doing the community a great service making these. Cheers.

    My God man the level of proficiency you demonstrate is beyond anything I've ever seen. I really think line pilots should be required to show that they can perform as a single pilot during type rating checks when the aircraft is certified as two pilot operation.

      @flightdeck2sim  6 років тому +2

      Hi MoMadenU, thanks a lot for your kind words 👍🏼
      Whilst it looks good to do everything on your own it's important that Line crew keep to their area of responsibility. Cadets get ample opportunity to practice incapaciatation events during their Type Rating and have to operate the aircraft during critical phases of flight single pilot.
      I remember after my Type Rating and initial Line Training feeling out of my depth! It takes a good couple hundred hours to get comfortable!

      Hi realtime, thanks again for your comment!
      That's exactly the purpose of this channel! Most people who use the sim seriously would like to know the implication of what they're doing and what implication that's going to have on the aircraft!
      It can be a fine balance for me trying to decide what you SHOULD know and what you NEED to know, all this whilst operating a multi-crew aircraft on your own, explaining the actions of PF/PM in real time and what we're trying to achieve can be quite challenging!
      Kind Regards,
      flightdeck2sim.

    Very informative video! Thanks a lot.
    I'd use my rusty physics to interpret how energy (gravitational potential + kinetic) is dissipated faster than usual in your video. Clearly, the first approach is to apply the speed brakes and, after slow down, extend the flaps and landing gears. They just increase the drag. The second method you demonstrated in the video, which I didn't think before, is to nose down for a high speed "dive." Because the energy loss is cubic to the speed, it also increases the rate of energy release.

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  7 років тому +4

      Above FL100 increasing your speed is the most efficient way to get back onto profile by utilising parasitic drag.
      Below FL100 you're usually restricted to 250kts so a combination of speedbrake/flaps at different speeds like in this tutorial works best!

    That's the video I have been looking for couple of months. Thanks a lot. Energy management is quite important so I'd like to see more videos, examples(scenarios, hard to perform it but applicable, or unable to do). If you do, I will appreciate. Or at least, any writing about energy management would be useful, too.
    Last request, I would like to see videos about autoflight. Especially about descent, climb (which mode should be used in which situations). FMA Modes.
    I have been in type rating course for 1 month, and will start simulator training couple of months later. You channel is the most useful one I have seen. I have watched almost all videos. Obviously the procedures are not from virtual pilot. Those are very close to my company procedures unlike the other channel videos. Keep going ..

    Nice presentation. May I add that the landing gear earlier extension is an excellent drag producer from which we can benefit in high alt/speed approaches, especially on short sectors flights when we also benefit from the quicker turnarounds due to more sufficient cooling of the brakes.

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  5 років тому

      It certainly would be effective but the Landing Gear is not designed to be used as a speedbrake!
      As a last resort it could be lowered earlier on the approach if you wanted to help decelerate but its not good for the gear doors to be subject to high air loads and they would need to be replaced more often (see FCTM)
      FD2S

    • @steliosarapantzis5322
      @steliosarapantzis5322 5 років тому

      flightdeck2sim Of course as a final resort, but there is no problem using it since there is no limitation of speed (of course we are talking about speeds below 250kts). Boeing states not to use flaps as speedbrakes and as I can recall there is no such recommendation for the gear.

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  5 років тому +1

      @@steliosarapantzis5322interesting! Our FCTM (4.20) states to avoid using Landing Gear to increase drag to increase gear door life and passenger discomfort.
      Wouldn't use routinely but as you suggested, no problem as a final resort OR don't accept that crazy shortcut!!!!

I have a very basic and silly non flying question. How do you move your view in the cockpit around so precisely and quickly to where your eyes need to be looking. The best I can do is preprogram views but I think your using the mouse right drag feature. I've tried to duplicate using my mouse without success because the camera rotates. Once again EXCELLENT video's with extremely high production value I'm moving on to the Takeoff series next.

  • @markg7963
    @markg7963 5 років тому

    In a nutshell, ya gotta add drag. First choice is adding speed if you aren’t speed restricted. Next choice is drag devices.... speed brake, gear, flaps, slats, even resort to the extendable landing lights😉. But for flaps you have to slow down first to not over speed anything.
    In a nutshell, I hear all the time that the 737 won’t descent, but in actuality it’s not the airplane, it’s the fact that the VNAV path is programmed to descend at the last possible second.
    So instead of screwing around in path descent, then try speed intervention to engage the speed descent mode, and allow the aircraft to descend earlier. Sometimes it’s better to get down a little early versus being a hostage to the path.
    Once you get in the approach environment, the speed mode of descent will be overridden by gradient and the aircraft will fly that instead.
    If you ar flying an aircraft that doesn’t have speed intervention, go to the descent page and toggle the aircraft to >SPEED. Then execute. In a nutshell speed descent is like a vnav speed climb. Won’t go through an altitude limit in the legs pads, but also won’t do anything to get TO that altitude either.
    So, when in a speed mode, you get to control the path with energy, but in a path mode, you have to control your speed with energy. When I say energy, I’m talking about thrust and drag changes.

      Hi Mark, yes been flying this tin can for the last 8 years and I also teach line crew and type rating students how to recover from high energy descent/approaches, which is exactly what I showed in this tutorial. I must confess I've never extended the retractable landing lights to add drag, that one is new to me..

      Hi Kirk, thank you!
      Ideally yes but many commercial airports have a preferential landing runway direction. In some cases they will land with up to a 10kt tailwind before switching (eg Corfu)
      This was setup to demonstrate how to manage a high energy approach, a tailwind being a contributing factor.

    Is there a difference or meaning between your use of the terms: 737-800, 737 NGX, 737NG? I own the Zebo 737-800 only, Are all your terms mean the same aircraft. Or is there some subtle difference between those terms and if so, which aircraft is the ZIBO representative of?

      @flightdeck2sim  7 років тому +2

      Hi Maule m5
      Technically there is no limit to the ROC/ROD you can set using V/S and in LVL CHG it's not uncommon to see high ROD's to get back onto profile. What passengers will notice is the the rate of change (G-Force) of ROC/ROD. During departure you can typically see an attitude of something like 20 degrees Nose Up but this is not usually noticed as they're comfortably sat in their seat.
      Hope this helped!

      Hi there,
      The 4nm is the configuration point for Gear Down and Flap 15 used in VMC conditions.
      The APP mode on the EFIS is not required to fly an ILS, it just changes the orientation of the display.

    The smallest detail. What you said about the false glidepath. I had no idea. I come from the 777 and since so much is automated and fixed for dummies it was a bit of a learning curve to do the 737. I think this might be the reason I had random approach issues on approaches I've had no problems with in the past.
    Is there an issue if you arm the approach if you're above it? Can the same effect happen?

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  6 років тому

      Hi there,
      Yes you can capture a false G/P in reality but you have to be extremely high or low (pretty much twice (6 degrees) as high as you should be and there is another at 9 degrees). It's called a "false lobe" and it's pretty well documented
      The 777 is just as prone as the 737!

      flightdeck2sim Thank you for the response. I think I was too tired and I didn't decend on time or see your video about how to get back on the path. Then captured it way too high once again without knowing. Causing the false glide path. Makes sense now.

    Brilliant video as usual Captain.
    I have one question though. I've noticed in the video that when on Level Change the Vertical Speed reaches more than -4000 fpm. As I'm a realism maniac, I want to know, if possible, what the limits for Vertical Speed both when descending and when climbing are when it comes to passengers comfort.
    Thank you :)

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  7 років тому +6

      Hi ghaith, good question!
      There is no set limit regarding ROC/ROD. If during descent we accelerate the aircraft in LVL CHG it's not unusual to see +4000fpm. The passengers won't notice this.
      The same applies during climb. If you're very light (short sector with not too many passengers) it's not unusual to see +5000fpm ROC.
      Hope this helped!

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  7 років тому +2

      Douglas Ulyate if you see the attitude it never gets less than 3 degrees below the horizon, it's the rate of change of ROC/ROD they'll notice (G-Force). During departure you can typically see an attitude of something like 20 degrees Nose Up! Your champagne would get spilt then!

    • @Bismuth69
      @Bismuth69 7 років тому

      That does make sense, attitude is generally fairly flat. I aim for 15-20 degrees during takeoff, leveling out a bit after the gear has been raised, and then letting the AP takeover while I cleanup the flaps and monitor the climb. On Southwest they don't serve champagne, obviously, so that's not a problem. However, I know of my regular business class pax on KLM do enjoy their bubbly! ;)

    If you are cleared by ATC to cross a fix at a certain altitude how would you manipulate the aircraft? Can you setup the FMC or would you use vertical speed and position the green banana over the fix?

      Hi Judith,
      Yes you can set the restriction in the FMC and use VNAV to efficiently descend and make the restriction. The green “banana” is also useful, if unable to comply advise ATC.

    I was flying on VATSIM today. ATC gave me a really nice shortcut but it threw me 5000 ft above the profile. My question is: is it possible (on rare occasions) to extend the landing gear and use it as a speed brake when the actual speed brakes aren't enough?

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  5 років тому +2

      Good day! What a shortcut haha! It is prohibited to use speedbrake with gear/flaps settings greater than 10. If you stow the speedbrake you could extend the gear but it's not recommended by Boeing. Prevention is better than the cure, refuse the shortcut and ask for extra track miles!

      @@flightdeck2sim Thanks for the reply. I found out what the problem was. A while ago, I read a thread on the forum saying the descent angle is the best at low airspeeds speeds.
      Hadn't realized until now how ineffective the speed brakes are at low airspeeds. Asking for a free speed, selecting the level change mode and cranking the speed on the MCP all the way to 300 KIAS with speed brakes extended worked just fine.
      Is there anything wrong about this technique?

    One question, what happen if you dont wanna use the speedbrakes, you know that you are gonna receive that clearance to dme10 and you want the fmc to flight on vnav path? You join the points and then create a hard altitude right? but what altitude would you put on vilna to be on profile? Cheers

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  7 років тому +1

      Hi AF MG, Good question!
      If we knew we would get the clearance we would not put the "At or Above/FL70A" at VILNA. FL70 happens to be the exact altitude you need to be at VILNA so we would make it a hard restriction which means we could continue idle thrust without having to use speedbrake.
      It's worth noticing some restrictions just happen to leave you high and you have no choice but to extend flaps early/use speedbrake.

      It certainly would be effective but the Landing Gear is not designed to be used as a speedbrake! Hello. Great video. I currently fly the 738 but must confess I have a doubt about speed intervention, If you could explain me, Id really appreciate it. If Im descending, fmc speed and vnav path, Then ATC asks me to slow down from, lets say, 285Kts to 240Kts. I could do that simply by hitting speed intervention. However the plane would start to get high on the path.This path, in which Im getting higher and higher, is still the same path planned for the old speed, 285 kts right? to create a new path, for 240 kts, even with speed intervention still activated, I would have to go down to the fmc and change the target speed to 240, so I could get a correct path display on my ND for 240 kts, right? Appreciate your help, thanks.

      Good day,
      Yes that's right, you would update your TGT SPD in the FMC but you wouldn't be on Path, you'd be even higher with a slower TGT SPD!
      Is there anything you can do about it? Not really! If ATC has given you specific speed control this must be maintained, you only really have the speedbrake to help capture your profile. This is something we deal with every single day and it's completely normal. You just apply the techniques I showed you in this tutorial to attempt to recapture the profile.
