I use public transport everyday, and the key point is to have not just buses but many options : walking on large sidewalks, bikes on secured bake lanes, electric buses, trolley buses, tramways, metros, trains, and (robot) taxis. When I take the train with a suitcase, or when my 85 years mother has to go somewhere in the city, a (robot) taxi makes quite more sense than a bus or a bicycle.

public transport sucks major ass and I live in the country with the best public transport (Switzerland), it's expensive as hell, it doesn't get me to my exact destination (like a car) and good luck carrying your weekly groceries on foot between bus and train stations. You might just be a bigger moron than Musk and Trump if you think current public transport is better than private auto.

Well, I don't. And I hate driving. Driving sucks. Especially in big cities from a red light to a red light. And it's also dangerous. The surface area isn't enough to provide meaningful charge. If you could get 1 square meter of solar panels on there, you could get like 200 watts of charging power, and that's generous. With that much power would take 10 hours to get 2kWh of charge.

To answer your question at 8:57 about the extra processing and distributed compute: This isn't the first time Elon mentioned using the car's computer for extra processing as a way to earn money for the owner. He's been mentioning it for at least the past 18 months or so on multiple occasions. The idea is that while the car is sitting in your garage charging and having access to high speed Wi-Fi for example, its processor could be "rented out" by third parties or xAI for example to do some processing if you opt in that program. I'd imagine it would be a revenue share type of model.

It also seemed as thought he skipped a bunch of stuff they initially planned talking about. I wonder if they had a strict deadline of be done by X time with the event and due to the roughly 45 minute delay due to the medical emergency, he might not have bothered mentioning some of the stuff, or maybe it threw him off a little. You rightfully pointed out that there was a lot more info on the slides after all. So maybe Elon decided to cut some stuff out of the presentation to make sure people still had the time to get the rides in. Just speculating...

I really don't think this is a product to scale, its a 20 vehicle showcase. Cabs designed for cities (see London Cabs) are designed for 1-5 passengers and that's with a driver. Inductive charging is a logistical nightmare and also very hard to make efficient beyond 20 KW/h. Why also does it need to be streamlined its not going far. Why not build up? The 'Van' concept is also mad, it will never get approval as shown.

If it was not evident before, Tesla just warp-drive/light-skipped into the future with the Cybercab, Roboban, and Optimus. The vision is for cities and municipalities to be autonomous through the entire product cycle (from vehicle movement, to passenger/goods transport, to charging, to maintenance).
Imagine a fleet of FedEX, UPS Robobans executing urban deliveries with Optimus as the on board delivery assistant (scans the package by looking at it, confirms delivery and DONE).
This cycle can be readily utilized on Earth, Mars or anywhere. The fact that these products can be designed, engineered, and executed in such a short timeframe is simply awe inspiring. The Roboban looks ready for the Las Vegas tunnel right now/as is imo 🤔.
Think of how many things might very well be become obsolete very quickly: school buses, parking lots, crosswalks, stop signs/signals, speed limit signs, etc. And with the Robotaxi/Cybercab, even the DMV will also be of little use 🤔.

Name me anything you think is a good value in the economy today? Lastly everyone of these conversations ends up talking about edge cases as if every product has to be absolutely 100% perfect from the start. I'm simply not convinced by what they put on the We, Robot video, which was a mostly a club video type of footage meant to hold your attention until the molly kicks in, I guess.
The Robotaxi will need better robots to deal with real taxi customers. Imagine all the people at this party after they've had enough food, alcohol and, shall we say recreational pharmaceuticals. When I drove a taxi, a fifty dollar cleanup fee charged to the customer was not enough to deal with the mess and the loss of revenue. It's going to take a bit more than a robot arm with a vacuum cleaner. And those are relatively clean people. Quiet a few of my customers were...dirty. Some were skanky enough for me to have to roll down the windows for relatively clean air. People probably tried to have sex in the Robotaxis at this unveiling. So, yes, shepherd your fleet of Robotaxis, but don't forget to clean the condoms, lubricants and other things out as well.
The video also included a screen of legalese that probably boils down to this meaning effectively nothing.
Elon is right about one thing, that being that the future needs to look like the future. That is something, though, that people actually have a great amount of resistance to. Otherwise, antique stores would be of little use...
