Hockey has definitely peaked. Youth hockey teams that require 20 hour per week and thousands of dollar commitments by parents are not sustainable. The NHL bought some time in moving south because most of their fanbase was getting old and now they are dying off. The Phoenix disaster along with Atlanta should be huge red flags that hockey needs to get back to its roots in the north which to be honest has been in a long slow decline. Example: The Minnesota State High School Hockey Tournament, the days are gone that any team in the state could win that tournament, now it has become the same power schools year after year. That does not bode well for a sport that promotes itself to be for everybody. It's just for the rich.
You can play soccer in just about every geographical area in the world. You can play Hokey in Antártica and North Pole without an ice rink. That’s actually not even the reason why Hokey is losing popularity. The real reason is that people can’t afford it and the NHL is making bad marketing and broadcasting decisions.
Only for kids with rich parents. In my day the gateways were street hockey and floor hockey in gym classes. Now they both dont exist or barely where i grew up. Then u got the crazy equipment prices. When more ppl play then u get more viewers. Oh btw would be nice of canlan to redo their ice from time to time. I feel like skating on glass because of barely any top ice or there are so many ruts.

Hockey got locked up in tactics back in the 90's and too many of the games are not nearly entertaining enough. There aren't many WOW type of chances per game. The stars are not much better than the worst players in the league so their shineability are not really bright enough to catch non hockey fans' eyes too much. Sure, MacKinnon, McDavid, Kucherov are great in the eyes of real hockey fans, but since we are talking about how to get the not really common hockey fans to watch, it just becomes 10 random guys on the ice at a time. And the 5-10 exciting players are spread over 32 teams so they aren't even in the same games very often. And they are even swapping with a bunch of other guys all the time so they only play a third of the game. The tempo while playing is high, but those 10 per cents of difference between your McDavid and your 3rd liner is not making a non hockey fan's heart beat so they just want more, more, more. And even if they might get carried away once in a while there's a stoppage on play, a power break, a VAR break or something taking down the pulse over the following several minutes with no action. You have bad odds of getting a chance to get fired up over this game these days.
Been on the decline since Bettman took over. The owners are happy due to short term cash infusion from excitement about relocations and expansion fees, but Bettman is killing the sport and the NHL marketing is doing a disservice to the game. SOCCER/FOOTBALL HAS TAKEN OVER 4TH PLACE IN north American sports and hockey is becoming irrelevant.
@@johnnyroberts3761If you are outside Canada, see how many people in your office or school even know who Connor McDavid is. It's sad. Yet they can all name even less generational talents from the NBA, etc.
Are people hallucinating. It's all nostalgia if you think hockey was better in the days of grapple and hold. The game is far faster, far more exciting now. The goons maybe gone, but if exciting hockey was two guys barely able to skate fighting for 30 seconds of a 60 minute game, then I don't know. I would say cost and population decline will strangle hockey at the youth level. The idea of going to 36 teams is madness although, as a Brit maybe we'll see a third British player drafted if there are like 250 draft picks every year 😂.
Its great, better than ever except for one terrible divide, American teams and Canadian teams. After Gretzy left Canada to go south and with free agency the game and talent has gone south. No Stanley Cups for Canadian teams
Luckily not the same for hockey here in Europe. I am Norwegian, and hockey is really a growing sport here. And I know in the neighbouring countries, Finland, Sweden and Denmark, hockey is growing and doing well.
It's much easier to grow when the initial base isn't too large and I don't mean that disrespectfully. Also, Norway is one of the richest countries in the world so while the cost of participating is significant, it's not prohibitive.
Ever watch football? A few seconds of action followed by 30 seconds of guys standing around. And commercial breaks after every punt or score. Plus the lots of coaches' timeouts and the goddamned 2-minute warning.
Woke? The NHL? The white old boys club? There's probably no other sports league in North America that is more conservative. Case in point, they just banned individual taping of sticks, just so they don't have to talk about a player doing the rainbow taping. lol
I can play any sport here anytime of the year except hockey. 🏒 Nuff said. 😂 Hockey is my favourite sport. The plays, the hits, the fights. The rivals. Yes, 70s to 90s, quite good. Now, too many teams to track. I used to watch all the replays. Now few. I can name about ten current players. I used to but Center Ice but found most games I wanted to watch were not included. Yes, you don't get to watch ALL the games of your favorite players. This is about money, not caring how many watch or care. My team will never win tge cup again so why continue to watch and pay to see a few allowed games for me to watch? Worst marketing of any major sport. NHL will voting to expand because of the fees to join the league.

Most Canadian families can no longer afford to put their kids into hockey

It's gotten like most sports now, bunch of millionaires hamming it up, after scoring, to promote themselves.
Hockey will head the way of Horse Equestrian….Both elite sports which expensive to fund…

Yo people wtch illegal streams and those are not shown...
yeah, if they made it easier and affordable to see your favorite teams legally viewership would be up, for sure.

Can’t name one hockey player there no superstars in that sport
There are superstars, the NHL just sucks at marketing.

Best player in the league is in Edmonton. Leafs have lots of talent but are constantly wasting it.

This is the NHL not hockey in general I think. I think there are about 4 new college division one hockey teams past 3 years now.
Hockey is boring. Too many stoppages
Ever watch football? A few seconds of action followed by 30 seconds of guys standing around. And commercial breaks after every punt or score. Plus the lots of coaches' timeouts and the goddamned 2-minute warning.
Lol basketball with their 30 min in the 4th quarter at the last 5 minutes on the clock. Baseball where most players stand around.
Hockey has started to become boring in the early 2000's. The players have become true Mama's Boys...
Hockey's getting boring not like it was 25 years ago
NHL is too woke, too boring, and rigged

@@MarvelMadness2003 too many sheeps??? 😝
To be honest, I don't know
If anything, NBA has become much more boring by now...
Rigged? Rigging is very risky at best since hockey has a bigger luck factor.
Well it's a big business first.
