    Oh my gosh, I completely forgot about an even worse example from the Last Knight - Megatron refers to Starscream as his "old treacherous friend" when Starscream's never actually been treacherous in the movies.

      Also it's jarring to hear Megatron refer to Starscream as his "Friend". He flat out hated Starscream in the movies. He considered him a failure, beat him down after they both killed Prime, and even refused to tell him his plans in Dark of the Moon.

      Even the obscure Nintendo ds game handled that MUCH better. During the last 1/4th of the decepticon route, starscream betrays your created transformer and waits for Megatron to destroy optimus, then attacks him from behind and steals the allspark to achieve power, and he becomes the main antagonist and final boss for the rest of the game. And during the first few missions, he straight up lies to you about megatron's disappearance and even threatens you to never seek out megatron. A movie tie in game that no one talks about was beyond faithful to the character lores unlike the main movie product

    Rise of Skywalker does the exact same thing. The film assumes most people knew the plot of the Dark Empire comic series so therefore it doesn't need to explain how Palpatine came back. The issue is that most people have no idea what Dark Empire even is.

    One thing I can say in regards to the reverse of including information that was left out of the source material to make things flow more consistently was in DP's version of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. For example, in Part 5, Jotaro shows a picture of the Stardust Crusaders, but there was never a moment where any such image was taken during the whole of part 3. When DP did the anime adaptation, they not only had a scene dedicated to the photo being taken, but it's used again at the end of the part as a sort of "farewell" to Stardust Crusaders as a whole. Thus, when it shows up in Part 5, it carries vastly more weight with it.

    • @Blazecap
      @Blazecap 4 роки тому +38

      Yeah DP is pretty faithful to the source material. Any changes are usually for the better and to keep things consistent(like added the joe star birth mark in parts 1 and 2)

      Some spoiler-free context for why that photo was such a huge issue before DP fixed it:
      The photo shown in part 5 shows the full heroic group of part 3 posed together in a desert, including Jotaro, Joseph, Abdul, Polnareff, Kakyoin and Iggy.
      However, Iggy is first introduced about halfway through the part, meeting the heroes in Egypt and reluctantly helping them fight DIO's personal guard.
      Kakyoin was present for the first half of the part, but is severely injured by the very first opponent fought in Egypt proper and doesn't recover until just before the final battle of the part, at which point both Kakyoin and Iggy are visibly wounded (One with facial scars and the other missing a limb).
      The photo in part 5, depicting both characters without their injuries in a casual context leaves no possible point at which it could have been taken. In the TV anime, the arc where Iggy first arrives has a new scene inserted, in which Joseph acquires a new camera and decides to have a group photo taken.
      Jotaro is shown carrying the photo at the end of the part, giving more meaning to his appearance with the same photo in part 5, at which point he is the only hero from part 3 still active.

      @@Blazecap I agree. The only change/ removal they’ve made that truly hinders the story of any part is removing the Wang Chan fight from the middle of Part 1. In the manga, Jonathan encounters Wang Chan as a zombie about halfway through the story, not long after beginning his Hamon training. This causes him to realize that Dio is alive when he sees Wang Chan aboard the ship in the finale. In the anime, the Wang Chan fight is removed, so narratively there’s no reason for Jonathan to suspect that Dio is alive just because he saw Wang Chan; the last he saw of him was at the mansion before it burned down, and he never learned that Dio had turned him into a zombie.

      I was disappointed less at the legacy butchering and more the blase nature of the entire Kree society and homeworld. It's basically an empire run by a supercomputer, but other than that the worldbuilding is very few and far between, despite there being multiple opportunities. Was Carol the only soldier with energy powers, or did the Kree implement a supersoldier program after witnessing her "evolution"? How widespread is their brainwashing used if they can capture someone and rewrite portions of their memory (especially soldiers)? Why do some of the Kree have blue skin while Mar-Vell, Yon Rogg, and "Veers" have normal flesh tones?
      The one that ticks me off the most is why the Kree have left Earth alone instead of conquering it outright. All the screenwriters needed to do was stick a Sentry there and say that was all they needed to monitor the Sol system for Skrulls and other enemies- plus they could've used the giant alien robot to give Carol a proper challenge for the final battle..

      I wasn't happy with Sindel's retcon either, but I mostly justified it as a weird after-effect of Raiden messing with the timeline. It's for the same reason Kitana was loyal to Shao Khan and Sonya was standing with the other competitors at the start of the first tournament, while in the original timeline Kitana was already preparing to betray him and Sonya should've been restrained and forced to fight just as the tournament started.
      Or you can just say it's inconsistent, like how Shang Tsung was allowed to fight for Outworld even though he was originally from, even though Bo Rai Cho couldn't fight for Earthrealm BECAUSE he was from Outworld.

    I think an example of the oposite would be in The Hobbit.
    In the book, the elves only appear as a faction, and don't have any notable characters. Their involvement only serves as an obstacle to the dwarves, and then as reinforcement against the orc army. The actions of "The Elves" are describes by the narrator, without specifying any details about individual members of the faction, or their personal motivations.
    Probably because film is a visual medium however, for the movies they had to give the elves a "face". A character to represent them, that would act in the events that were only described by the narrator in the book. So they added the Elven King to the story.
    And since they were now a character, they had to have their own motivations and convictions. There had to be reasons why they would imprison the dwarves. Why they would fight against them for the mountain. And why they would ally themselves with the dwarves at the end.
    For that last one, they also created another character - Tauriel, the elven warrior, who develops a romantic sub plot with one of the dwarves, which by the end of the trilogy opens the Elven King's eyes to the possibility of having a positive relationship with the dwarves, thus giving him a character arc, as well as justifying his change of goals.
    And then, because thay added the King, they also had to acknowledge his son Legolas, who was established in Lord Of The Rings, so he was added to the story as well, since it would not make sense for him to be absent from such important events.

While funny and leading to some interesting fights, from what i recall it was never explained in the show why that happened. However, one of the video games mentions that Ben is "too rough" with the watch and is smacking it instead of just pressing it like he should. Which actually makes a lot of sense, the watch was created to be a tool, not a weapon. Much like how being too rough with a game controller can jumble the inputs, the same could be said for the Omnitrix.

    I think there's a right way and a wrong way to handle that kind of information: "It's the ship that made the kessel run in less than 12 parsecs" doesn't need to mean anything to the viewer, it means something to the characters in the story and the viewer can infer it's significance from context: It's a way of saying "this ship is fast" while also implying things in the world the audience doesn't know about. In this respect the audience doesn't need to know who Kung Lao is to understand what Liu Kang is saying. "I am Liu Kang, descendant of Kung Lao..." still hints at Liu Kang's motivation, even if the viewer doesn't know who Kung Lao is.
    The problem is when real story points hinge on the viewer knowing things that aren't told to them. Confusing Mileena for Kitana is something that will need more explanation, since whole scenes revolve around it and "who is this person who looks just like kitana" is a question you probably shouldn't leave hanging, either make her important enough to the story that you can explain her or cut her out of the movie.

    • @AndreyKrichevsky
      @AndreyKrichevsky 4 роки тому +4

      I don't agree with the Kessel Run/Kung Lao analogy. Even though it is not explained in detail, the context of the scene clearly establishes the meaning of that statement. Han is boasting about the ship's speed, so his statement is clear to be an "impressive" example of that speed. And Obi-Wan's reaction show's that it is even "unbelievably impressive", implying that 12 parsecs is an incredible speed for the Kessel Run.
      With Kung Lao, the movie never really gives any hints as to why his legacy is note worthy. It IS clear that his name carries weight, but not why.

      I'd need to re-watch that scene, It's been a while since I watched that movie, but I feel like the point of that line is to establish *why* Liu Kang is invested: Avenging an ancestor. I feel like you don't need to know who Kung Lao is to understand that he is somehow important enough to Liu Kang to go this far to avenge him. We don't need to care about Kung Lao, we just need to know that Liu Kang does.
      The analogy wasn't *super* great, but I figure it was a well-known scene that could work as a counterpoint... a way to do what this video is talking about *right*

    This element in adaptation's grinds my gears to no end, especially when the makers will constantly preach about changes having to be made, making it easier for the audience to follow and understand said story. Yet will include plot lines that have no explanation or context that only fans of the source material would fully grasp or understand. In some cases ends up introducing plotholes or inconsistencies that were never present in the original material.
    Spiderman 3 comes to mind, there's no explanation to why Eddie Brock acquires SM Powers when he acquires the Symbiote. No explanation to how Eddie Brock was able to find out SM real identity, to then kidnap Mary Jane.
    Most egregious one was the bell tower scene. Peter had no know idea Symbiote was weakness at that point, yet conveniently just happens to be at the right place when he wants to desperately get rid of it . While in comic Peter knew the weakness beforehand which is why he went to the bell tower in first place to unbond from it. Lastly not much explained in regard to the hostile nature of Symbiote.
    If you have no prior knowledge of how Symbiote works and its abilities, it's makes no sense. Clear example of filmakers just throwing in a iconic scene with no understanding of the material.

    Persona 5 the animation added a lot more depth to Akechi’s character (before the royal did the same) it made Akechi’s heel turn more obvious, but also made it slightly more believable, they also added a scene before Akechi was about to kill joker where he told the other phantom thieves that he was on his way to save joker, during this encounter Ryuji has an emotional outburst, which Akechi ignores as Ryuji just being caught up in the moment and letting his emotions get the best of him, but once you realize that the phantom thieves already knew of Akechi’s deceit this scene can be read as Ryuji trying to save joker, the anime actually has some interesting moments despite the fact that it’s hindered by its stilted animation and lack of adding too much to the already established story.

Then later I found he is a character in a novel. Still, I played the games in sequence, I shouldn't need novels to catch up with the plot and important characters. xD

    Nice to see a video that will give Negima some love. The manga deserved better.
    Cases of adaptations adding details that help;
    -Dragon Ball Z Abridged takes the death of Dr. Gero's son from being a supplemental note to something we see referenced in series, with the reveal that he was killed in Goku's attack on the Red Ribbon Army base. Even if Gero was dead by this point it gives him a much more compelling reason to hate Goku.
    -The Warcraft movie changes a character who was half human and half orc to a half human and draenei in the original game/lore. Seeing as the orcs had only recently entered Azeroth, one of them have a child with one of its native humans who was an adult by that point doesn't make any sense. It does however make sense if it's a draenei since those actually came from the same world as the orcs.
    -The Naruto anime introduces the rest of the titular character's classmates in the early episodes. In the original manga, they just show up in the Chuunin Exam arc and the plot treats them as though they were always there even though it's the first time the readers have seen them.
    -The novelization to Revenge of the Sith does a much better job explaining characterization and the setting than the movie does.
    -The Hobbit trilogy established an orc army marching on Erebor at the end of the second movie. In the book they just show up out of nowhere with no build up.
    Adaptations removing details
    -The BlazBlue anime has Ranga defeat Yuuki Terumi, and just let him live for no reason. In the game it was explained that thanks to this thing called a Life Link, Terumi could only die if Ragna killed him and Noel at the same time. This being left out means Ragna, the man who has murdered thousands of people, spars the most evil man in the world for no reason. Now the Life Link was still an annoying asspull that was introduced on the spot with no foreshadowing, but it was something.
    -Jurassic Park's famous "T-Rex vision is based on movement." This is something simplified from the book, in that the reason that Rexy couldn't see anybody who wasn't moving was a trait she gained from some of the toad DNA used in the dinosaurs' cloning, since some toads have vision based on movement. For something as huge as a Tyrannosaurus-Rex to not being able to see anything if it's not moving, well that's ridiculous since how would it find food if it couldn't see anything. Plus that goat she ate right before breaking out didn't appear to be moving and she still noticed it.
    -The Unlimited Blade Works anime having Archer use the titular ability in his fight with Shirou. In the original visual novel, Archer didn't have the strength to use that ability, which is why when the main villain Gilgamesh showed up, Archer left Rin at his mercy. Archer did not want to leave Rin with Gilgamesh, but he wouldn't have been able to stop him if he tried. But in the anime Archer still had the strength to use Unlimited Blade Works, the very ability Shirou would use to defeat Gilgamesh. So this entire moment just makes Archer look like a horrible person since he just left Rin to her fate at the hands of heartless sadist and his rapist lackey.
    -Fate/Zero's anime. This is a great adaptation, but one flurb it has is with Berserker. After he's defeated, he states he regrets his past actions and wanted Saber to punish him for them. It's a very emotional scene, but it doesn't explain exactly what Berserker DID that he felt was so horrible like the original light novel did.
    -Justice League War. Darkseid invades Earth, and the movie doesn't bother to explain anything about who or what he is. It just takes for granted that the audience knows that. It's especially bad since the storyline the comic is adapting had the same problem. Despite the New 52 being created for new audiences to be afraid of the years of continuity, it's first arc with the Justice League had Darkseid show up without a proper introduction. Terrible movie based on a terrible story arc.
    -TMNT: Mutants in Manhattan. The game just assumes the audience is intimately familiar with TMNT. Transformers: Devastation was also written assuming the audience was familiar with the original show's events, but this was a much worse case since it's based on the IDW TMNT comics, when a majority of TMNT fans would know about the show from the cartoons, ergo, they know nothing about the comics. The comics does nothing to explain the origin of the turtles, their sensei Splinter, and who their enemies and allies.
    This is especially bad in the finale of the game where Shredder is trying to destroy New York to kill Splinter, calling him his old enemy. This is referencing the feud between Shredder and Splinter in the comics, but Shredder is barely in the game so the audience won't have a clue what is going and can only make assumptions. The game treats Shredder like he's still the arch enemy even though as far story goes, he just exists to add another boss fight after General Krang is defeated.

    • @Protosilver97
      @Protosilver97 2 роки тому +1

      Transformers Devastation is designed to be like a random episode of the original 80's cartoon, it has some things that wouldn't make sense for a fan (Megatron is now a tank, everyone has some new special powers, the lore that involves Nova Prime), but it has that feeling. This way, the story is simple, but explained. Megatron is evil and wants to make the Earth a planet for robots, why? Unless you know the most basic piece of story of Transformers you don't have an idea, but you can keep going. Why does everyone know each other? You don't know why, but you can keep going and eliminate them a little bit after the meeting.

    • @dragonstormx
      @dragonstormx 2 роки тому

      @@Protosilver97 Devastation is aimed at people familiar with the original cartoon, and Mutants in Manhattan looks to be aimed at people familiar with the IDW TMNT.
      I haven't read the TMNT IDW comic but I have read stuff about it and from what I gather, Mutants in Manhattan is TERRIBLE adaptation. Shredder is set up as some generic bad guy who wants to kill Splinter and the Turtles at any cost even if it means dooming the Earth. Unlike most of the incarnations, IDW Shredder actually has depth to him and wouldn't try to cause the end of the world.
      As a villain in the game, Shredder also fails since he has next to presence in it. We see him meet and team up with Krang at the start, and unless you unlock the conditions to fight him alongside Karai, you never see him again till the end of the game. He shows up AFTER the main plot involving Krang's invasion is over in an attempt to blow up New York.
      In Devastation, the Autobots are either trying to get the Ferrotaxis or stop the power generator of the Proudstar to prevent the destruction of the Earth. Since the former option is fails, you resume the latter by the end of the game as the apocalypse grows nearer. Megatron has had a presence the whole game being behind the plot to cyberform Earth, so fitting the last level is fighting your way to him before a rematch to take back the Ferrotaxis.
      Shredder on the flipside feels like a boss fight tagged on because he's the franchise main villain. You could have cut him out and just made Krang the main villain.

    If done right, sometimes an adaptation can give the audience a piece of dialogue that new viewers will see as just world-building (Think Obi Wan's "Your father fought in the Clone Wars" from A New Hope), but will mean something to the fans who know all the backstory.
    i.e. the Marvel Cinematic Universe paying lip service to ideas more properly fleshed out in the comics, that could potentially either be adapted and seen as a tease, or left as a stray reference. Like them referencing Wakanda years before Black Panther. The audience doesn't have to know who Black Panther is to follow the plot, just having to know Wakanda is a country that exists in this world.
    I don't know many of the examples you used in this video, but the "I am the descendant of -name-" doesn't seem like it would be out of place in an entirely new, no prior context needed film. Like Luke Skywalker saying his father was a Jedi Knight

I'd say the biggest way we view stuff is maybe in how certain time periods or places are shown? So in a movie or game we see something look like x, we always view it as x, no matter what the book or original adaptation (ex: Dorian Gray is blonde. So many of my friends were like “Who is Unicron?” Why is he so damn important?” “How did he end up inside earth?” Transformers Prime did a much better job with the Unicron plot. As for the Knights, little detail is offered aside from them having betrayed Quintessa long ago. It doesn’t help that they are a concept introduced in that movie, with the only other source mentioning them being the 2005 IDW continuity. The Sengoku Basara franchise... well, maybe this is just my opinion, but it committed one thing that would lead to the Last Party thing: In that franchise, character popularity is everything. If you're on low popularity chain, get ready to be replaced by someone else (Ranmaru to Tsuruhime, Nouhime to Magoichi) or get the boot, never to be mentioned again (Yoshimoto). If you're high on the chain... EXPOSURE EXPOSURE EXPOSURE EVERYWHERE!
    In this context, during his debut, Mitsunari exploded in popularity, surpassing even co-poster boy Yukimura. To capitalize on this, Capcom tried to push on the rivalry between Masamune and Mitsunari, no matter how much it doesn't make much sense storywise, the only main basis is that they're the top most popular characters in Basara (Ieyasu is also popular, but he's like... the 4th most popular? And thankfully, his rebound rivalry, Yukimura, actually had more sense considering what happened in the Siege of Osaka in history, compared to Masamune-Mitsunari). Not only in Last Party, but Sengoku Basara 4 also follows this, pushing more on Masamune-Mitsunari, although that wasn't my biggest gripe on the game. Let's just say after 3, Capcom pulled a Konami, not in the way of mistreating their employers, but more like thinking that their main market for SB lies somewhere else: Shounen-ai fans that would be more like referred as 'fujoshi', instead of those who appreciates subtlety and more coherent, unbiased writing. That is how the new characters are all pretty and tend to be not as memorable. At least to me.
    Thanks for listening on my opinion on SB's path. And need I say it more: I hate popularity polls.

    You more or less implied it already by mentioning Judge End/End of Judgement, but the other loopy part of how The Last Party switched Masamune and Ieyasu is that Masamune had a story worth having already. Basara 3 had him get decimated and humiliated by Mitsunari to force him to consider his own limits and not just dive headfirst into revenge. I'm almost positive the movie threw him into that role because he was basically the series MC... even if that made him more boring by comparison.

    I think with the case of Sengoku basara (IG anime) they kinda fucked themselfs over originally since both Ieyasu and Tadakatsu were originally killed off in first anime in 2009, Sengoku basara 1 and 2 (the original games) canonicity and continuity was bit weird since they were close to each other a year apart (2005 and 6), the older characters from 1 like Oda clan, xavi and itsuki came back in 2 without much explaination and it probably seems like Dynasty warriors case where the story is the same but the plotline extended further from Incident of honnoji to Hideyoshi conquest.
    it's not until sengoku basara 3 which came and introduced clear storyline amd timeline *in end of basara 1 nobunaga was assassinated by akechi mistuhide and 2 ends with hideyoshi succesfully conquering japan until ieyasu betrayed him in start of basara 3* .
    afterwords is the preparations of the battle of sekigahara as there are 2 factions: *eastern and western armies* with few outside third party like oichi and nobunaga, 3 unlike previous games which focused more on indivisual cast rather then events that surrounds them
    my theory is that during production of Basara 2 anime they probably decided to add in both Mitsunari and Ieyasu as last minute addition during the finale since they only apear literally at last episode and they don't fit anywhere in the story outside so they can set up *the Last party movie* in line with basara 3 (samurai heroes) which came 18 days after anime airing in japan
    somehow tadakatsu and ieyasu are alive

      @@ShadowBerserker454 I believe it was stated in the first anime that Ieyasu was assassinated by Mitsuhide before the final battle with Nobunaga (If I recall correctly) and in the second season they retcon that by showing Ieyasu alive and healthy as if what happened in season 1 was false, they even changed Ieyasu's design from how he looked from the first season to how he looks now ignoring what they established before.

    Can't wait for the Negima episode tbh, granted I can barely recall a lot of the Kyoto arc except that Negi fights Kotaro in the manga and that it is the arc where he is assigned to protect Konoka because she is descendant of a magical family from Kyoto. I need to reread it, but I do agree that the anime felt...lacking in places.
    As an aside, the Senran Kagura sequel animes and OVAs are also kind of weird in this regard as well, because the Versus games introduce new characters that are in a different alignment compared to the old cast - like how the Gessen Academy Girls are Good Ninjas, but, unlike Asuka and the Hanzo Academy Girls, (used to) subscribe to the ideology of everything done for the greater good, meaning evil ninjas and those who are tainted by evil must be purged, while the New Hebijo Academy girls are under the rule of Suzune after the last guy funding Homura's Crimson Squad - formerly the Hebijo Academy Ninjas - betrayed him and became rogue, yet the animes following the first one just assumes you know who the characters are and their relationships, despite the first Senran Kagura anime having ended with the betrayal and defeat of Orochi (or preventing his/her summoning), while what came after was either a promo for another entry called Estival Versus I believe, and then the sequel anime starts you off thinking of the girls you saw in the Estival OVA, but you don't know the relationships of them until a few episodes after, and even so, I think the retelling isn't as well done as in the games, even if it's mostly fight scenes placed in between the cutscenes where you fight hordes of enemies and then one of the girls as a boss at the end, mostly because you don't get the full context of the relationship between say Asuka and Yumi. (I don't know if the Hebijo girls get explained either, though might have to rewatch the show since I never did finish it, but ended up reaching said episode where the Gessen Girls backstory gets explained.)

    Hey, Snake, you've probably seen new Suicide Squad kill the justice league trailer. The game that take place in Arkhamverse and in which Deadshot was depicted as black man. That wouldn't be the issue if it was his first appearance in Arkham games, but he was appeared before as caucasian man. And why is king shark is alive? He died in Assault on Arkham.(i heard he has son in comics, but when i googled comic frames, the son didn't look like in the trailer).
    All i hope for is that the Deadshot in the trailer is not original Deadshot but the some guy who just take his name. I think something like that happened in comics before.
