the gilded age as a theme is such an interesting concept because the definition of gilded is coating something cheap in gold to make it seem more expensive then it is. it was an age in america that was economically booming and on the surface, a lavish time. but underneath the surface, there was poverty, discrimination and exploitation.
this concept could have been used to make so many statements but instead-
Yeah some of them were really disappointing like it wasn’t that hard to follow like cardi b did it really well
but why are we expecting the rich to critique themselves?
right like just watch age of innocence or any movie set in 1870-1900s. ROSE'S DRESSES FROM TITANIC COULD BE CONSIDERED GILDED AGE STYLE.
The gloves, the sparkle, the décolletage showing....come ON.
SOOOOOO many opportunities missed!! That’s what makes it the most depressing. Almost everyone could have Sashay away!
they have cheap brains and taste and covered themselves in gold to make em look good. so bang on theme
Fun fact: The shade of pink Sebastian Stan wore was actually created during that time period. So he was TECHNICALLY still on theme, just subtly.
nothing subtle about that atrocious fit
@@amberhughes-price7023 I'll agree that it wasn't his best look. My guy looked like a high-lighter. There were definitely worse outfits than his, though.
I don't think that's true
@@MadameCorgi It was created in the 1850's. so a few years BEFORE the gilded age, but it still ties into the theme in a way. Even if it's not super obvious :)
@@amberhughes-price7023 pepto bismol type outfit
kim starved herself, took Marilyn Monroe's dress out of the museum it belong in, stretched it over her body despite it literally being made for Marilyn and Marilyn alone (Monroe had to be sewn into it that's how much it was her dress) mistreated a garment of extreme cultural significance, violatedd Marilyn's wish that it not be worn by anyone but her, and the dress still wasn't even dress code. went through all that for no reason because the dress code was a white tie merging of both glamour and gilded age.
The museum could have just said "no".
Not to mention she had A REPLICA tht whole time n wore the original dress for like 10 minutes
@@joyanna9433 n she could've just wore the replica she had instead of wearing the original for like 10 minutes just to ruin it
@@joyanna9433 calling Ripley a museum is giving it far too much credit. museums have ethical policies they have to adhere to, they would not allow anyone to wear that dress.
what gets me about this whole thing was that dress matched Monroe's skin tone and gave a nude illusion and it doesnt work on Kim because she is darker and ruins the whole point of the dress aaahhhhhhhh
I’m not a fashionista or a historian, but I definitely feel like I could’ve followed the theme better than these people did 💀
True. I’ll just rent an old ass outfit that somewhat matches the theme lmao.
What is the point of a theme when they don't even care about it.
I recommend Mina Le’s video if you want some analysis of the theme and fashion!
@@randirafaeli ong
yall we gotta make our own met gala because this comment could never be more true 💀
All those designers really went for the 1920s and said "this is the gilded age right" huh. The historical fashion side of Tumblr must have such a migraine.
I'm on the historical fashion side of Tumblr and people are PISSED😂
Technically yes, but also no
To give them some credit the term "Gilded Age" came into use in the 1920's and 30's so it is at least somewhat related.
I'm not even on that side of Tumblr and I've seen the posts of their migraines lmao
We did, we really fucking did
The fact that Mcdoesit just cancelled the entire drama around Kim's dress just by ignoring it, love it
Yes but the “drama” around Kim’s dress is very important
@@Bra1n__St3w exactly 😂 I was actually here for the drama but ig not 😂😂
as he said he did zero research before reacting i think he just didn't know tbh 😅 but i agree, it's very important and i like kim even less than i already did
What drama 🍿👀
@@creature5966 Kim basically accelerated a historical dress' lifespan by wearing it.
The dress she wore was worn by Marilyn Monroe when she sang for the president. It was a big deal because the dress was, at the time, quite shocking. It was as if she was nude. This was during a time where women would never dare dream of wearing something sheer.
By wearing the dress (which didnt fit) with the modern oils and tans that celebrities these days wear, she accelerated the rate in which this important part of history falls apart.
It has been a tradition for me to watch Mac's reaction to the Met Gala outfits every year cause I feel like a Met Gala is not complete without it
Omg matching pfps 😩
I totally agree this guy is so fucking funny everytime that I get in dark spaces he is one of the few that I watch including his friend who has also a channel mikemgtv they also have a podcast and BABBYYY everytime that I watched one of their video new or old one I am cracking up so much I enjoy watching them both they put a smile in my face when I needed the most
ILY your PFP just fyi 😦💓

Dove Cameron’s dress is the inner boning in gilded age dresses. You know the large ass hump on those dresses (think Cinderella’s step sisters)? It is the boning that held up the fabric to look like that.
Oh that's so cool! So she was actually on theme
Oh cool! Love that
Dove Cameron lowkey popped off and I’m here for it
Memento Mori :)
How hard was it to follow the theme? These celebrities are getting worse every year. Having all the money and fashion designers clearly doesn't help.
Yeah is is a shame some of them said they didn’t even try to follow it they just did what ever they wanted which kinda kills it
Because who actually cares 😭
In part its those same designers that just want to show whatever instead of following the theme
If I were invited to any red carpet event as a celebrity, I would just dress up as Beetlejuice and shit like that to rebel against expectations. Also pissing people off is funny, like Matt Stone and Trey Parker in dresses that one time.
Omg who cares it’s not a episode of drag race or something nobody is winning prizes. like it or move on stop getting but hurt over it 😂
honestly, as modern gurlz already said on their video, men missed the mark so much more than previous years by not wearing plain old suits lol the gilded era was the perfect excuse to just wear a suit
I watched their vid as usual and honestly the saltiness made my day xD
and a bowler hat
So, celebrities have no idea how to Google fashion trends in different eras. Except Billie, she looked like she at least modeled her look after a painting from the 1800s.
And somehow she still managed to look bad lol TvT
@@cheerupbaby1715 I think Billie looked fine. 🌛
@@cheerupbaby1715 I think it's the combination of the hair style and the clothes. But she still, she was on theme🙆🏻♀️
@@Gon_kitsune Definitely! I think she could have perhaps put a wig on. I mean her hair is black while the outfit is very light cream colors.
i didn’t like billies personally, but she definitely had the theme down pat
Anna Wintour is literally in charge of the met including the theme and she showed up with whatever that is, despicable.
Don't forget her Dora the Explorer ass haircut
anyone else more excited for mac's fashion reviews than the actual events themselves? taking attendance rn 📝

i feel like Blake Lively understood the assignment of the theme of being the statue of liberty in the greens and its deterioration of oxidation in the rust colours. The rest? eh? Kim took a Marilyn Monroe dress that should not have been outside.
Lizzo also understood the assignment.
her dress was very 1920's and art deco it was beautiful but not on theme
@@lordc1508 The statue was literally built in the guilded age
@@jalapeno1119 yeah but her dress didn't look like the statue did it? it was inspired by the statue. the mosaic on the front was art deco, not like something from the gilded age. if she was wearing the statue i'd agree with you.
Ok wait so here's my pitch:
so it's the met gala, but 100 random people every year
And they're given a huge budget to have to be on theme
There are judges, and the judges are the sharks from shark tank, the America's got talent crew, plus RuPaul, Abby Lee Miller, and Tyra Banks, and then the winner gets to eliminate one celebrity from getting invited to award shows or galas
and we slowly get rid of the celebrity presence
...that's my pitch
PLEASE let's do this lol
YES PLEEEEAAAASEE
Yes
I'm with you on Abby Lee Miller. She could definitely bring those influencers' egos down a notch. Maybe teach them how to actually dance while she's at it.
I always think its so funny when people start these videos acting like they can't judge bc of whatever they're wearing but like, you don't have to be a five star chef to say a meal is bad they same way you can wear sweats and say celebrities can't dress themselves lmao
THISSSSSSSS
Someone had to say it lol
YESSSSS LMAO
i will never understand having that much money to dress HOWEVER you want for a fancy clothes party and they just go “what about a minidress”
Literally ;-;
It genuinely angers me, like-
Sometimes I wish they knew, just *_HOW_* much,
I would willingly sacrifice in an unholy ritual to wear extravagant clothing.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
I am disappointed by the lack of Bustles. Like the guilded age covers both the first and the second bustle era and we got so few bustles. Like i thought big buts where in fashion.
I love how Mac is like "I know nothing about fashion" and then proceeds to notice every 1920s piece and even knows when the Gilded Age started.
If anybody wants an easy reference for full on GA fashion, just look at TITANIC pictures, actual historic ones or from either James Cameron's movie or the miniseries written by Julian Fellows.
I'm hella confused as to the cock-up over some of these clothes. A good designer should either know the history or at least look it up. It's weird.
That said, Janelle Monáe was my absolute fav. IDGAF that it was the wrong period. That ensemble was dope AF.
HE EVEN KNOWS WHEN KNEES WENT IN FASHION!!
Titanic is in 1912!!! That's 12 years after the gilded age!!!!! It's like telling people to watch Friends to see what the 70's looked like!!!
@@Luischocolatier No.
For one thing, these historic subdivisions generally don't have hard and fast start and stop dates. Secondly, it takes time for new fashion to develop and take hold, especially the further back in history you go. TBH the Gilded Age was the last really long Era. Thirdly, these time periods aren't just fluid in date, they also have multiple names. The Gilded Age is also known as the Victorian Era or, if you drill down to be more specific, it can be called the Victorian/Edwardian period.
This stuff isn't chiseled in stone, again, specifically the start and stop dates.
The important part of this whole exercise is to give people who aren't overly familiar with different fashion periods, a visual to give them an overall idea of the look. And if there is any look that is the quintessential definition of excess, it's the look of excess that was so popular by the end of the era.
@@grayhatjen5924 Gilded Age is 1870s-1900s America, Victorian era is 1837-1901 Britain and there is a MASSIVE difference in fashion between 1830s and 1870s. Gilded age and Victorian era are not synonymous whatsoever, they just took place at the same time in DIFFERENT countries.
@@critter5349 they both looked VERY similar in silhouettes and style. Corsets, bustles, long sleeves and high necklines were common in BOTH eras of fashion. The American Gilded age was styled mostly after the British Victorian Era.
Billie’s look was one of my favorites of the night and also on theme. But to be fair, being on theme is kind of the bare minimum
it was on theme, but it looked all over the place
@@lizzynotmcguire761 yeah, I thought it was lowkey hideous lol
the colouring was not it. like it was nice but where the colours were placed... no
Should have ben red, gilded age was big on colour and its more her shade then pastel pink.
Just learned this so I wanna share, the Celebrities were paid to go to the met gala by these fashion brands (ex. prada, chanel, louis vitton etc.) and these brands have control over what they wear so obviously, they (the brands) tend to promote thier newest collection instead and ignored the whole theme lol.
In all honesty without Mac’s red carpet reviews I deadass wouldn’t even know these events happened
johnny suh made it so perfect, my fav met gala look. i loved the cape and how flowy it looked, literally everything about it was perfect. i just love johnny sm pls
Saaaame it looked super comfy since it appears to be made of satin.
yup
✨this✨
johnny suh has just such a confident captivating presence im living im o b s e s s e d👁👄👁

The concept theme was so unique and easy and mostly everyone did the absolute bare minimum, like that irks me
I looked up what the point of the met gala is and it's a charity event to fund the costume center named after anna wintour. But like there are literal homeless people who could sell these outfits to buy a house. But blake lively still ate down.
Yeah :/
It’s a little more complicated than that. The Costume Institute at the Met (which also includes the Brooklyn Museum costume collection) is essentially an independent museum within the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The Costume Institute is an important resource for research and preservation, and pretty much its entire budget for the year-for curation and conservation and education- comes from this one event.
The Met does not provide funding for the costume institute, even though they house it.
I didn’t actually know Wintour’s name was on the Institute, but wealthy donors get their names on all sorts of institutions! Doesn’t mean she’s running anything there, apart from being a chair of the Gala committee.
I’m a theatrical costume designer, the costume institute is a very important and valuable historical resource for me and everyone in my field.
I think my favorite look is Johnny Suh, some people say he didn’t fit the theme but I saw someone say that the silhouette with the waist coat and jacket were stereotypical of the era…but i’m not expert so feel free to say your opinion if you want to
aaah mine too
He looks like a modern Jack Dawson from Titanic imho
I was really hoping to get an opinion from Mac about Johnny Suh. Mac doesnt see to like jackets/coats but I was curious if he’s like Johnny’s or not
@@seikiadoren same tho

I had to model for this kind of stuff once and boy it was a disaster 💀 The designer was like "FUCK IT NOBODY IS GONNA WEAR SHOES" and our "catwalk" was grass outside. And like none of the stuff actually fit me. But anyways slay this video 🤪
That sounds interesting! Why didn't the designer let you wear shoes?
@@sunettas9738 you know why 💀
@@sunettas9738 the designers artistic prowles are sometimes completely weird
mac... apologise rn for not giving us a live reaction to Blake's dress reveal, i have been waiting all fricken week to see you freak the fuck out over it
So like, Kim wore Marilyn Monroe's dress (the one she wore to sing happy birthday to JFK) and honestly, Marilyn did it so much better. And I'm lowkey mad at Kim for wearing such a beautiful dress and not doing it with style (imo). But that might just be because I don't like Kim.
Oh no you’re 100% right in being upset. Because let’s put this in perspective: Kim took a dress that was being kept locked away as a historical piece, lost 16 pounds to actually fit in it, and then wore it when it didn’t match her skin tone (the dress was designed to match Marilyn’s skin tone so that’s why it looks weird on her) and wasn’t even on theme anyway (Marilyn’s era was the 1950s-60s so she’s off by over 50 years). She even changed into a replica later when she could have just… worn the replica that would fit her properly?
Yeah it’s definitely a bad look.
Yeah she payed $5 million to wear it but Marilyn was sewn into the dress (they made it while she was wearing it) so it fit her perfectly and the fabric is so old that even though it used to be stretchy it isn’t any more so it will have loads of tears and stuff
@@xxsiennaxx7080 It's so horrible. And all that money could have gone somewhere more productive, especially since a replica was available!
@@kaibird542 I didn't know she switched into a replica!! Oh that just makes me feel angrier.
It gets worse, Ripley's also gave Kim some of Marilyn's hair and her immediate reaction was "oh I'm gonna do some voodoo shit with this hehe".
Mac: "I bet you Shawn Mendez came in a jacket."
Well. 💀
for real why was Amy Schumer even there? she looks like a hungover Matrix character.
ETA: my favorite look is Lizzo's. i love that she brought her flute and i LOVE that her corset hugs her belly rather than smoothing it away!
My favourites were Johnny Suh, Blake Lively, Vanessa Hudgens, Chloe Bailey, Normani, Megan Thee Stallion, and SJP
I’d have to say Blake lively did the best with a nod to the Statue of Liberty also fitting the times and theme well with the full theme being ‘in America’ not only that the dress was beautiful and the fact that they did the color change was the perfect touch just like the statue, super creative!
Johnny Suh didn't disappoint but also Lizzo is just perfection
I heard Emma Stone's dress was from her wedding after-party and she just wore it again for the met gala
honestly based
reuse and recycle babes
We love a frugal queen
Kim Kardashian is getting dragged for having on Marilyn Monroe's iconic dress that she sung JFK Happy Birthday in. That's all I know about the Met Gala
It’s always a good day when Mac posts..and a chaotic one.
Took me 2 seconds to google and confirm gilded age as 1870-1900 why did so many people show up in 1920s/30s 😓 not to mention those would have fit in great last year but nooo
_Ah yes, time for the moment we've all been waiting for , _*_Mac's Met Gala Rewiew_*
Cam is actually wearing the "bones" of the dresses from that era, they took the underneath supporting structures of vintage dresses of the time and made it into a dress itself. Very clever
i haven’t seen anyone react to johnny and he didn’t exactly follow the theme but he looks really damn good anyways and it’s not just a plain boring suit
The silhouette was totally on point. Gentleman during that era wore jackets with tails... not to mention silk/satin. It's a great modern take on the era without being too much... like if he'd had a top hat and a cane, it would have been way too much. 😄
My favorite look was Johnny Suh in Peter Do (but I might be a teensy bit biased 🤭)... The suit might not seem like it at first glance, but it was actually a really clever modern take on the type of clothes gentleman wore during that era. Had he had a top hat and walking cane, the theme would have been much more obvious, but imo it also would have been too much. 💚💚💚
I don’t keep track of when these events happen but when I realized it was Met Gala again this year, I immediately thought “ooh new Mac video soon”
Dove Cameron's dress. HUGE no. As someone who deals with a centipede infestation every summer, it just reminded me of centipedes. Nope. Her arms are the body of the centipede & the frills are the legs. No. Nope. Nuh-uh.
Favorite dress? Blake Lively. That transformation of a dress, beautiful.
Same, I know it wasn't that on theme but DAMN Blake's dress was stunning
Blake actually managed to stay on theme without doing the fashion, she said in an interview the dress is modeled after lady Liberty the transformation was oxidation occurring
Doves dress is literally the inside of a guilded era dress. It’s still innovative. Oh someone said what I said under you.
well yes but at least she was on theme
i love how he praises the outfits followed by what they look like and the scenario their most likley in lol
Dove Cameron’s dress was supposedly inspired by the boning of the corsets in the dresses of that time period!! (I could be wrong but that’s what I’ve heard)
Finally! Been waiting since the Met Gala for you to post a review video! Thanks Mac for brightening up my day!
I'm really enjoying watching both his and Mina Le's reviews of the Met Gala, their styles are very different so it doesn't feel redundant :')
Would recommend HauteLeMode’s as well if you have not seen it. He also did a great video on the history of fashion in the Gilded Age before the Met Gala.
Same! I watched her video immediately before mac's
8:31 actually common misconception: it was not okay to show your knees in the 1920s, women simply had shorter dresses that were not longer made specifically to fit them so a lot of the time when sitting down or moving their legs the knees would show
His reaction to Kris Jenner had me cackling🤣🤣💀
Lol you missed the opportunity to click bait with another kpop idol (Johnny Suh from nct attended), but I always love your fashion evaluations and loved this video also 💕
you're telling me they were supposed to look like Brigerton characters...and this is what they came up with??
I love it when Mac posts! I'm so ready for this review!
honourable mention of Johnny Suh ... he was also on theme but just barely ! it was a another suit tho... he looked good wearing it tho!!!

I don't care that he didn't meet the theme, he looked GOOD 👌
17:25 gotta love conan gray dude
The lack of masks at this event is *incredibly upsetting* and makes me *very anxious*
wanted mac to react to johnny suh ever since the met gala like he ate (he isnt in the video im crying 😭)
… I wish someone did a legitimate reproduction of something from the 1870’s or 80’s but with 21st century fabrics, trims, applicay’s … but alas, all we get is whatever the designers saw in their acid trips… avant-garde nonsense.
I have never heard of the Met Gala til just now. But DANG these dresses fly as heck tho! Thanks Mac for showing me some beautiful clothes! 😩💅
You’re going to love his other met gala videos when people were actually on theme 😂
Literally the only reason I ever cared for Gala was to watch your reactions on it lol 😂
Doves dress was actually really on theme! It was inspired by the boning underneath the dresses at that time.
12:56 this gives me very "BE NOT AFRAID"
Okay, but Johnny Suh ate though, left no crumbs. Like, the theme was mostly missed on him and he still ate.

I'm surprised Johnny wasn't on there cause omg he looked stunning!!!!
Finally a Met Gala fashion reviewer I respect
Wasn't the last MET Gala like five minutes ago? There's a new one already? Jesus what even is time o.o
Yeah, it happened last September cause it got Postponed last May cause of Covid so they moved it up to later in the year, hoping the virus would settle down by then. Also, more people were getting access to vaccines later on last year.
I absolutely love how Mac has confused the Jenner and Hadid sisters with eachother. Gave me a good laugh XD
16:59 THANK YOU, I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE 😭😭😭 THEY SABOTAGED YOU WITH THAT OUTFIT GURL
Billie was def the most on theme. The way her dress was styled is pretty much accurate to the time era

He's literally one of my favs, so I of course have to mention Mr. JOHNNY SUH.
Was it just a "modern take" on a suit? Yes.
Was he hot as hell in it? Also yes. And that's all that matters to me.
Kylie legitimately wore a damn wedding gown, this is just sad. 😭
She was supposed to wear it in 2020 but it closed and her fashion designer who made the dress had died so she respected him by wearing the dress even that was off theme
loved the review, an actually non-condescending and loving review hhhhhh keep it up babe
Revisiting this gem waiting for the 2023 video
Damn he skipped Johnny Suh, he looked hot and his outfit was actually on theme perfectly. The rest of this was great tho. I agree with it all💀
Dove Cameron was actually on theme, she was wearing the what the boning looks like for a Gilded Age dress
First few seconds: I never imagined one of Mac's intro's could be this quiet💀
After 11 seconds: yeah I should've known
Mac’s Met Gala reviews are one of the highlights of my year. No matter how long it is, it’s never long enough 😆👌🏽
Shawn Mendes giving Doctor Strange vibes and I'm here for it!!
In consideration of the theme, most people were off. The gilded age in America was a time of economic growth. During this era, many factories were created to mass-produce items. It seemed luxurious on the outside but it was truly a time of poverty, harsh working conditions, and child labor. America was still in the Victorian era of fashion. Therefore, Billie had the most historically accurate outfit. I also thought that her dress was beautiful and well-executed. Idk about you mac but her dress was correct, elegant, and made her look amazing.
not them absolutely butchering my favorite era in american history and fashion 💀
Just to give some context on Emma Chamberlain's look; The choker that shes wearing originally belonged to the Indian Maharaja of Patiala. He originally had it commissioned by Cartier to make an heirloom choker studded with diamonds he owned but when the Partition of 1947 happened, the choker went missing. It reappeared decades later in an auction in London with the diamonds missing, and Cartier bought it. The choker represents a painful part of our history, especially within the Indian Subcontinent who experienced the partition. Nothing screams more fitting than having someone wear a stolen artifact of our history rather than it being returned to the family of the Maharaja.
Stay awesome and fantastic Mac 😄. I love watching your videos and sending lots of love from Canada 🇨🇦

I saw Billie in that gorgeous dress and thought, ✨tinkerbell✨
Once again, Blake Lively stole the show for me. She literally gets it every time.
Dove was actually on theme her whole thing was like the boning of a 1870s style dress and the way her arms were placed were to to imitate the way dresses were shaped back then

Hi Mac! I just wanted you to know that you make me laugh and smile all the time, your an amazing conetent creator and ive been a fan for a long time! Love your content and keep doing what you do!(but dont overwork!) also! Are you going to do another anti-gay commercial reaction? You dont have to if you do not want to!
I deeply resent Amy Schumer attending this event when she so openly loathes it and doesn't want to be there. If she wanted to make some point about of insane wealth and indulgence on display she could make a shooter demonstrating the cost of admission to a cause she felt was more worthy of it. Instead she keeps showing up and killing the vibe. I deeply appreciate those who make an effort. Even when they aren't on theme I will sometimes forgive it if they deeply commit to a fabulous look. This night is supposed to be fashion meets art meets the world's most expensive theme party. Beg for it, borrow it, hell even make it. Innovate! Express! You'll never have permission to take bigger fashion risks. Be anything but boring.

actually, back during the 1870s, I believe people wore "tails" made of down feathers from birds. They arched in that same shape, but were generally much fluffier
As someone who took a costume design class, I'm just frankly offended by the lack of following the theme 🤣
You don’t know how hard I’ve been waiting for this… gimme all your Macopinions
