These tractors always sounded best thru the factory muffler. They had a hum and buzz with an occasional growl that I have never heard another diesel 6 sound like.

Ford engineer couldn't get Ford to build a properly strong Select-O-Speed ($$$) so he took his know how to John Deere. They finally got shift on the go a decade after IHC's TA. IHC premiers Hydrostatic transmission, not for heavy draft but supreme for all variable speed tasks.

Big mistake by Ford not to improve and develop the powershift tranny, John Deere picked up the ball and has not looked back since.

@@thevox1075 It's a little bit far from here but possible. is it possible to e mail some pictures and contact info? My email is fwurth@hotmail.com I had one back in the late 70s, was an interesting critter even then. I had replaced the trans once but got talked out of keeping it in favor of larger IHC 806 which we still use.

@@thevox1075 I know I’m late and all but where did you get a crank or any engine parts for it? It is the online 6 right? I had to buy one used to rebuild a 6000 but seems to be in bad shape and heard they shouldn’t be ground on those engines.

The 1960s were recalled and they brought you a Blue and White tractor in 1961. They swapped your tires and wheels onto to the replacement. The Red and White ones were updated, painted Blue and White and sold as used in 63. The real Trojan Horse was the wrist pins. The diesels responded well to more fuel and even a Turbocharger but the wrist pins would break or pull the bottoms of the pistons out if the pin cracked in the middle of the rod. The Closed Center hydraulics were lightning fast but that nitrogen accumulator made them dangerous.
Been around several Selectospeed tractors and still have one. The early 6000s had some transmission issues but not all of them. The true 63 and later 6000s had a fairly bulletbproof transmission. Ya just had to leave stock and all was fine.

Most broke down early and were scrapped in our area. They only sold a few and word got around fast to stay away from Fords problem child.
